This guy says he built this by himself, with one helper. (http://www.yourhoustonnews.com/ranch/living/bellville-man-s-home-really-is-his-castle/article_db11d534-0c2c-11e3-8dae-001a4bcf887a.html) I can't see how but it sure is cool.

Neat looking place, but don't see how 2 guys could build it either.

Started in 1998, I can see 2 guys with the needed skills doing it.
Building things was my profession before I started takeing them apart.
:03:

To bad it's not closer to Dallas. I'll be there around the end of September.

There is a place in France where enthusiastic archeologists since years build a medieval castle and surrounding village - with nothing more than bare hands, tools and manufacturing methods as they were known and used in the medieval. I forgot the name, but Several years ago I had linked to it already in a thread.

Maybe somebody knows the place I mean or remembers that thread, and re-link it, forum search, like so often, fails me again. Would like to know how far they got by now, its been some years since I checked their project last time. It was pretty mighty much impressive! :D

We have a nutter in North Virginia who built himself a functional castle. He also gives tours and talks about why he built it. :o

I would not recommend it as a B&B as it was filthy when we took the tour.

This thread reminded me of Rubel's Castle nearby here in Glendora, California:

Nice, but Newman could have put a bit of effort into the arches.

Skybird,

I think this is the place you mean. An amazing project using original techniques.

Battle Castle host Dan Snow on-site at Guedelon, France, where a castle is currently being built using only medieval techniques.

The project I meant was castle Guedelon.

A comparable project they seem to run in Arkansas, the Ozark medieval fortress.

Blimey, thanks for posting that Skybird, I stumbled across Guedelon a while back, I forget how, might have been a program or radio show or even a post on here, and I'd forgotten all about it. Good to see it's still coming along.
Question is, will it have authentic period smells? :03:

Youtube holds a 45 min. docu on Guedelon, unfortunately in German. Several other films there, but they are French or German. I think the long one was the reason why I posted it some years ago.

Ah, now that I got back the name of the castle, I found the old thread from 2010.

With a BBC link and video.

Just come to Calistioga CA! Sattui, the winery of the same name built from solid stone Castila di Amorosa! 150,000 sq .ft of Tuscan fortress built to honor his roots. six dungeon levels(tasting rooms) and a legit torture chamber! The first stop on my personal tour of the Napa Valley... completely authentic to the last detail. We called it"Sattui's folly"-we ain't laughin' no more!:arrgh!: =http://www.castelladiamorosa.com (http://www.castelladiamorosa.com)[/URL[/URL]]

Well, if I would be darn rich, I'd buy an old Castle in Germany or even France - or just both. Being hugely interested in the medieval and a hopeless romantic... how would I not love to reside in my own Castle?

A new build one like in the OP would not interest me one bit. It is missing all the history and authenticity for me. Cool project non the less.

That reminds me of trying the lottery... :88)

Guedelon lacks the history, yes, but it is authentic. They do all construction be methods as used in the medieval. No modern tools. Even the hammers they use, they have produced themselves, afaik. All material like bricks and planks, they have also produced themselves, by medieval procedures. The textiles also have been manually woven, by medieval tools.

I wasn't referring to Guédelon, I meant the Texan "Castle". :03:

Looks to have been based on Bodiam castle; this beautiful place featured in a number of old movies. I've been there a few times.
