View Full Version : One more datapoint about the decline of our species

I am seriously contemplating buying a new camera as a reward for finishing my Dissertation. One of the cameras I am considering is the Nikon D800. To learn more about the camera, I decided to download its manual.

Naturally, at the first part of the manual are all the safety concerns. All good stuff, mostly about how not to damage the camera.... but one safety warning caught my eye

Using the viewfinder diopter adjustment control

When operating the viewfinder diopter adjustment control with your eye to the viewfinder, care should be taken not to put your finger in your eye accidentally. It is never a good idea to ever overestimate the intelligence of a humans. But the D800 is a pretty advanced camera. I am not sure your average advanced hobbyist/professional photographer needs to be warned about sticking his or her finger in to his or her eye. :/\\!!

But then again, perhaps it is a necessary warning. :nope:

I am thinkin that if you are the type of person who would stick your finger in your eye, unless you read a warning, you probably shouldn't be buying a D800. :nope:

But like any of these warnings, the reason they are there is because not only did someone actually put their finger in their eye, they probably tried to sue the camera manufacturer for not warning them about the photography specific risk of fingers in eyes. :nope:

If you are that kind of person you probably shouldn't be doing a lot of things. But we do.

I hate to say it, but you're probably right. It's right up there with "Don't work on the car fan while the engine is running."

In my years as a firefighter, I have witnessed the result of stupid things done by people who are supposed to be extremely smart. :/\\!! Wern, can you agree?

I still say the best warning labels I've seen are in my fire gear. It basically says that fire fighting is hazardous and someone shouldn't do it unless trained. :know:

I recently bought a tool to sharpen my chainsaw.
The very first thing in the instructions in big bold print was "Turn off chainsaw before sharping."

"Boy if it's running I can sharpen it in a few seconds." :know::know::know:

In my wildest dreams I can't imagination anyone trying to sharpen the thing with it running. :/\\!!:/\\!!

McDonalds coffee cup. Caution. Contents Hot! One would think the consumer would realize this. However, one young lady apparently did not and decided to drive her car with said hot cup of coffee between her legs. Coffee was spilled that resulted in burned private parts. She successfully sued McDonalds. The judge concluded the coffee was above normal coffee temperature. Is there an accepted normal coffee temperature established?

Common sense is like the old Jedi religion. It only exists in a fantasy put forth on the big screen. The common sense is strong with this one. Luke, use the sense. Sense not got, yes. Thanks Yoda. :hah

Wasn't it Winnebago who got sued because their owners manual didn't specify that "cruise control" didn't mean the RV drove itself and didn't mean the driver can walk back to the kitchen to make a cup of coffee.

I always thought that one was simply too ridiculous to be true and checked it out a while back:

When I was in EOD, many of our Tech Orders had the warning "do not eat or ingest High Explosives"

I used to think that was a silly warning.... Until one of our troops did indeed eat or ingest High Explosives (C-4) :/\\!!:/\\!!:/\\!!

People will do the stupidest things.

The cogent question is: as a species, why do we go out of our way to save stupid people doing stupid things like eating C-4????

As an old burned out Paramedic once told me: For the betterment of our species, the stupid are supposed to die off. :haha:

As I recall McDonalds' counter-argument was that people always complained the coffee got cold before they could drink it, so they made it extra hot to make the hot last longer.

...
Never try to clean grass from under a lawn mower while the engine is running (this was before safety release bars).

Never try to clear the snowblower's chute with your hands while the engine is running (this was also common before safety features were added).

Never use an electric hedge trimmer while you're 3 sheets to the wind (woman lost 3 fingers on that one).

Do not use a garden hose to douse an electrical fire from a downed utility wire (woman almost bought the farm on that one).

I know there's more but I cannot think of them right now.

Not really. A comma governs the way the phrase is pronounced when spoken aloud.

"It is permissible to omit the comma after a brief introductory element if the omission does not result in confusion or hesitancy in reading."
http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/commas.htm, Note 3.

Now for the big question: You've only been a member here for a month, and I've been fairly quiet during that period, at least where grammar is concerned. How is it you know enough of my habits to call me "you old stickler"?

No problem. I wish the other ones mentioned in this thread could also be dispelled with as easily but sadly, such is not the case. The McDonalds hot coffee incident boggled my mind when I first heard about it.

My knucklehead moment of fame was when I walked through a plate glass window at a 7-11 when I was younger. I didn't get hurt but I looked up and seen a long piece of glass dangling right above me that could of done some real harm if it fell. The cops showed up and had a good chuckle at my expense. Somebody said I should of sued them for not having it blocked off. I was too embarrassed to even think of such a thing but I heard years later that somebody actually won a case like that. Missed my big chance but then again, up here in Canada, I doubt it would of even made it to court. In my defense, the girl that distracted me was a real cutie.:D

Jimbuna

Here in the UK the glass would have needed to be prominently marked with a sticker as a visual deterrent for precisely such an accident.

I've seen a lot of peeps pay the price for their lack of common sense.

IE: Drilling holes in a piece of sheet metal on a drill press...without clamping the work to the table. Five of his fingers split the scene.

Reaching across a spinning lathe chuck can and will take chunks out of you.

Do not reach into a blender jar until the blades have stopped turning. Watched incredulously as a friend did just that before we could stop him.

My father tried the old clear the lawn mower chute while running trick, to his detriment.

Don't start a camp fire by soaking the wood with gasoline on a cool, damp day. Don't wear shorts if standing down wind of camp fire. Don't lean over the wood pile to see if the match went out. All three actions can give you a flash perspective and loss of body hair. I did manage to save the guy with the matches. The other two had their legs thermally shaved. DO listen to Wolferz when he warns you of your stupidity.

Don't throw a 50,000 candle power spot light face down on a car seat without making sure it's switched off. Unless you enjoy the smell of burned foam rubber.

Maybe that's why they say: Common sense is rare.:88)

Given that Voltaire said that common sense wasn't very common in 1764, I would say that it was probably missing for some time even before that if it ever existed at all. So if you can point to a time when common sense existed I would ask just how old you are and what have you done to stay alive so long.
