I recently bought SH4 Standard Edition from what turned out to be a rip-off
namely www.gamesrocket.com. I got the game, installed alright and played a bit
Then I went back 2 days later to get the SH4 Expansion pack. They took my money for it then informed me that in order to process this second order (that they had already taken the money for) I had to.
--------------------
For security reasons, it is necessary that you send us an email to
verification@gamesrocket.com containing the following:
1. A legible scan or photo of your ID card of your passport
2. The completed verification form as photo or scan
3. A picture of you together with your ID card or passport (your face and ID must be visible next to each other on the photo).
Pictures taken with a mobile phone are acceptable in most cases.
As soon as we have received all necessary documents from you, your order will be processed.
---------------------
Excuse me? I have NEVER been asked to do this before (Can you say 'idenity theft').
Well, they now have my money and I have no expansion.
So I went out and bought ANOTHER expansion pack from www.softpedia.com (they happily took my money) Downloaded the files and installed it to my working SH4 V1.4. Ran the program and it asked for my serial number, I assume to SH4. "That serial number is not vaild, You have 2 tries left before the game is locked"
I went back to Softpedia thinking there might be a serial number for the expansion pack. None Found. "That program does not have a serial number I was told"
I contacted Gamesrocket about it they said you are only allowed 1 key if you use up the activation the software is disabled and you can never reinstall it.
What?? Is this UBISofts doing or theirs.
So I'm out the price of SH4 Standard and 2 expansion packs.
Charge backs will be issued..And authority's and Visa contacted.
Stay away from Gamesrocket and Softpedia if you want to protect your sanity , and your wallet
Well, now I have paid for SH4 Gold from Gamers Gate. Downloading it now.
The new Silent Hunter is getting very expensive.
Cheers

Sorry to hear about the issues you've had: unfortunately I've had a couple of similar experiences in the past that really turned me away from online digital distribution websites: the only digital distributer I buy with now is steam as they have been pretty solid for some yeasr now (had some bad experiences when they first launched the system but they learned their lessons quickly).
Sure this means that unless you buy a game in one of their regular sales you're going to have to pay a bit more than you would with other digitial distributers but for me, I'm willing to pay a couple of pounds more to ensure I actually get what I pay for. I know that some hate steam for various reasons so the choice is of course the inidividuals.
Unfortunately going out to a brick and mortar store is becoming less and less of an option as there are so few places to buy physical copies of PC games in the UK with those stores that remain holding only a few new releases at maximum prices and shelves of "the sims" and its millions of addons.
If you paid by credit card you can probably claim back through that, debit cards are a lot harder to claim back on if there is an issue with a purchase.
Of course, if you want a real bargain I know this Nigerian Prince who needs to flee the country and is having a lot of issues getting his money out of the bank.......

I only use bigger, well known digital stores. Steam, GamersGate, GoG etc.

Trusted sources I indulge in as well.
I would restrict any digital purchases to the above companies, as they all have a great reputation, and long track record of service.

I finally ended up getting SH4 Gold from GamersGate without a problem.
I have used GOG, have many old games from them.
I will NEVER deal with Steam again. I like to own the software I pay for. When I was with them before someone hacked my account, got it banned and I lost every game I had with them (since you had to log in to Steam, to play YOUR games)
I would have given Amazon my money but they don't like anyone outside North America digital downloading.

Ozzies and Kiwis always have a problem with downloads and such.
A radio show I like on satellite radio, always jokes about how many people download their show, they then got into how some countries have to pay nasty VATS, adding 20$ to the cost of games compared to N American buyers. Their conclusion was, they cannot blame people for going the route of least resistance.
Even kinda backhandedly condoning downloading and streaming their show despite being on a subscription service.
I even gifted games to people in Ozland on occasion to avoid the VAT.
That is gone due to regional versions being issued.

You do not "own" any software that you buy you "own" for lack of a better term the right to use the software within the guidelines of the ELUA.
Sorry to hear about your Steam experience but you must have had lax security or a very poor password for your Steam account to have been hacked in the first place.
You should have contacted Steam and informed them that your account had been hacked as if it had they would not have punished you and would have reactivated your account.
Again though you do not own the game(or any software)you have if purchased legally you have the right to utilize the game.Furthermore you do not have to be logged in to play your Steam games you can play them in offline mode. Not being a Steam fan boy here or anything but I think there is more to this story.
You wont like Gamers Gate very much either because I am guessing about 40% of their games require a Steam account to activate.

Yes, its all MY fault, Steam is unhackable, Okay? Steam Fanboi. I respect your opinion...and mine is, you have no flipping idea what you are talking about. I did not see one game I was interested in that require 'Steam' I hope you have a long and great relationship with them.

Neither NZ or AU have VAT. That is a totally European thing we pay nothing extra beside the exchange rate, if someone told you different they are wrong, maybe they just wanted the gift :D. We have GST (Good and Services Tax) but that's only on things bought in the perspective country. The Gov't here is now trying to pass a law that you pay GST for all internet purchase to help out the poor shopkeepers that won't embrace the 21st century like their competition. I would like to see how they are going to enforce it worldwide.

Whoa...chill man.
He's not putting you down, just giving his opinions and experiences. Like you, like me...
No need to attack him.
As for Steam i do agree with you, i avoid it as well.
And even though Stealhead is right in that you don't 'own' any game per se, the difference btw steam and me having a hard copy in my own hands is a big big difference.

I remember Steam when Half Life came out and how they were on the brink of bankruptcy.
They were so close to failure yet ahead of their times, then gradually bounced back to success.
I am so happy they are doing great now!...What a beautiful example of persistence in the distribution of game licenses!
