Why would India need a submarine fleet? Do they fear a Pakistani invasion?
I hope the rescue operation finds the missing crew alive and well.

I hope the rescue operation finds the missing crew alive and well.I suppose the same question would apply to their aircraft carrier. Perhaps International Status might be the answer.:hmmm:

As an absolute minimum a submarine fleet and a carrier helps them protect their coastal sea areas.....they've a huge coastline.

Why does any country "need" a submarine?

Because it is an effective weapon. :yep:

Video of the incident:

It should be noted this submarine probably had 53-65 series torpedoes which are powered by hydrogen peroxide which has resulted in the lost of other submarines (HMS Sidon and possibly the Kursk).

They don't call it der Indian Ocean for nothing!; since both India, Pakistan and occasional boarder disputes with opponent China, all having nukes, the best place for in-the-middle India is at sea as we do in our Trident program. Of course we ruin the party by retaining control of Diego Garcia...:arrgh!:

The Indians have stated that it might have been caused by a fire that started in the battery compartment during a charge that spread to the torpedo compartment.

Little hope of any survivors then.

It's unlikely that those guy's survived but hopin they find at least one guy alive. But the Indian navy should of known two things, 1 Russia does not have a good history of building Subs, the best 1 ever built was the Red October :har: and 2nd just because their on sale does not make them a good deal.

Is the search for survivors still going on?

The Indian navy has stated that it is unlikely that anyone survived. They have recovered 4 bodies from the sub (they were found burned beyond recognition aft of the control room). I think it is a recovery and not a rescue at this point.

Yeah, not totally unexpected unfortunately.
