Like the title says post your most embarrassing moment in SH4. Mine would have to be when I accidentally sank the Iowa during the invasion of Okinawa.(It was night and the seas were rough. Plus it was around the time and area the Yamato would have been on it's final suicide mission so I though it was her.)

Late Feb 1942 off Java, was trying to get around to witness the Battle of Sunda Strait, thought I found the Japanese force(it was dark, i dont use the auto id at night unless super close, plus i dove for attack) and scored four Mark 10 torpedo hits on a large cruiser, but once the flames shot up, there was old glory, clearly illuminated:/\\!! The tough old ship repaired and sailed on with a list, but 3 hours later when ran into japanese forced, was easy pickings.I sunk a light cruiser with torpedoes shortly after Houston's magazine detonated from ijn gunfire.

Getting target fixated and ignoring the pinging - The angle of the searchlight beam ought to have been a clue [see photo] I'm assuming that embarrassingly stupid counts, for the purposes of this thread?

Slashing through a party of fishing boats close to shore and not realizing a shore battery had us dialed in. Very little gain vs the damage taken.
Forgetting to lower air search radar mast on clear, calm days while submerged and watching targets run like rabbits when they spot it...

Yeah, why can't that button stay lit when the mast is up, like for periscopes? :hmmm:

I normally don't even raise the radar mast as it seems to detect planes at maximum range even when it's lowered.

I was off Wewak and saw a tribe, needing supplies, I thought we would pull up.
My crew, led by my Exec Wernher mutinied and took all the rafts and went to shore. I couldn't get them back on boat and returned to Pearl with only two gay crew members, Wolferz and Simmy.
I was relieved of command in port.

I've hardly played in a year or more, just get the urge once in awhile and do a few patrols in my campaign. We use to have screenshot competitions over on the Ubi forum, so took a lot of SS's in my day. It was a rather competitive in it's day, so we all played with angles, anything to get good SS.
When I play serious, usually have no cams, so no SS. I guess the first few years I played I would do rather silly patrol reports, using all my friends as crew members. My patrols usually focused on my Exec Wernher and his stupidity. Probably been a year since I've done a patrol report.
I might even do another Christmas play at Subsim this year since Ubi died. It was a big hit, until Wern ruined it for everybody again.

So far it's between me sinking the Iowa and Armistead having the Yamato sneaking up on him.(Shouldn't his radar have given him some warning that something big was coming up fast though?)

It's a long story, but that's a shot from a patrol long ago, chasing the Yamato. I had radar at one time, but it was destroyed here. I think I already had about 80% damage, put several in the Yamato already, out of torps, lil hope of getting home, so just went after some crazy SS's for the SS contest at Ubi.
The fact is, it was Wernher's fault. AH, here is the complete story.

It was September 15, 2009, a dark and stormy night. Suddenly a shot rang out! A door slammed. The maid screamed. Suddenly a pirate ship appeared on the horizon! While millions of people were starving the king lived in luxury. Meanwhile on a submarine in the middle of the Pacific Ocean near the coast of Japan, a much-decorated captain was preparing his most embarrassing moment.

"It's a HUGE convoy in the middle of the South China Sea, a very large target dead center moving 20 knots, Cap, what do you figure it is?"
"We haven't got a good shot at a Jap flattop all war. Set all forward tubes for zero gyro and 20' depth. We'll shoot all six! Hey Bozo! Considering where we are, what do you think that thing is, the USS Essex?"
Wonder how Lockwood would know it's me. After all, truthfully I never saw what I shot at and never saw it sink. Coulda been a sampan for all I know. And with these weird currents, stormy condition and darkness, I coulda been anywhere, you know?
Of course in real life I wouldn't know I sank the USS Essex. I'd be fat, dumb and happy until I returned to port. Wouldn't even know enough to lie to protect myself. "Yup, Admiral, four hits out of four, radar bearings. I'm good.....damned good, sir! What? You identified what I sank, GREAT! What was it, a carrier? Hehehehe!":D
Yeah, that would be about the end of the pleasantries there, wouldn't it?:o

Wow. I accidently sank an Allied freighter once, about 1000 miles East of Austrailia (its a lost cargo ship from the Guadalcanal campaign, trust me...) and was surprised when I got to port and no-one said anything. At least I know what happens now.

Had a similar experience my first patrol in the SH4 u-boat mission. Having done two campaigns for the USN I left port in my Type IX and saw on the map a contact for merchant heading in my direction colored blue, the color of every allied ship I had seen to that point. So I submerged, lined up for the attack, when my scope came up saw a big modern passenger liner in my sights. Just as I push the button to launch my torpedo one I see the the Japanese flag on top!

Yep, it happens. There was a real life incident actually, Cmdr Elliot Loughlin of the Queenfish was relieved and court martial in early 45 after he torpedoed a transport carrying POW's in heavy fog.Loughlin was convicted on one charge and was issued a letter of reprimand.Loughlin went on to obtain flag rank later in his career .

I don't have that many as it caught me off guard. From near as I can tell I launched it too soon and it locked onto my sub instead of the attacking destroyer. I didn't even know that was what sunk me until I watched the footage of the after battle report.(I had thought that the destroyer had gotten a lucky shot with a depth charge.)

I just remembered Captain Glenn's final tour had a moment which qualifies as embarrassing.
I was trolling around Luzon Straits between missing the first convoy and missing the 2nd, just picking off the solos that tried to pass through. There was a medium/small merchant coming, and given the purple hearts the prior metchant had given me I decided surfacing across his path at 1500 yards would eventually cause me to regret the tactic. So, I set up for a torpedo shot. I figured 2 would do it.
I sat there in perfect position, and then had the thought, "you know, you have Time, and its alone; maybe use the stern tubes, and preserve forward options for later?" So, at almost the lastt moment I reversed the shot, and at an increasing range and angle I fired 5 & 6.
But, wait a minute... time to track 6 minutes??? - Doh! :/\\!! :dead: ...I forgot, I had loaded 2cuties. So, they eventually ran it down, but of course didn't sink it, and rather than waste a 3rd torpedo on it I ended up running after it and gunning it down anyway.
Dang Cuties!!!! If only someone was working on a Mk28 torp mod... *looks at JoeFremont*

Another fun moment in the Solomons. Think it was the day after the Battle of Savo. I had taken damage and had DD's all over me. I had a Kongo dead on the water, so hid under it. The DD's wouldn't leave and US planes started bombing the Kongo. It finally hit me, the Kongo could blow, so I risked taking off. I had got about 50 yards away when a US plane scored big and the Kongo blew, killing me.
Probably worse, I was hiding under a enemy ship in a convoy, using it as a block in shallow water. A jap plane trying to bomb me, hit the merchant, which was loaded with ammo and blew it up, killing me also.

I suspect that the Jap pilot would have some explaining to do:
Really, officer Saki ? You couldn't have just waited until he moved out a hundred meters past the ship? You know, a new Kaiten unit is forming, and they could use a man of your caliber...

I couldn't count the times exploding ships have killed me in my earlier days, worse, in storms.
Heck, my last storm battle, I was shooting by bearing at a ship with my 40's, then the ship came out of the fog, so deck gun fired, ship loaded with ammo, blew and killed us. You need to be about 300 yards min not to die when a loaded ship explodes.

That reminds me of a 3 day battle in a storm I once had. I used the hydrophones to get the bearing of the ship and using that information I would surface and take pot shots with the gun while not even seeing what I was shooting at. Of course on the last day I finally got the ship to sink and it was closer then I realized and when it blew up it sank me.
Remembered another one. was Hiding below a Crippled Carrier once and the Destroyer went "F IT" and rammed it trying to get to me...Sunk the carrier which didn't explode but ended up Pile driving me right in the Conning tower,Dragging me with it below my crush depth.

Teleporting up to the bridge (SHIFT-U) of my uboat and forgetting to immediately open the hatch before any thing else! When fired upon, the delay with my matrosen's 'arsen' in the way of the cursor, enables the enemy to get hits before I can submerge out of harm's way. :arrgh!:
I was chasing after a lone merchant in the Java Sea. We were not in a favorable position, so it was either surface and persue, or let it go. We surfaced and while chasing at max. speed, were firing the 4 inch. gun and getting hits.
The enemy ship was constant helming to make it harder to hit, but we started to gain ground. There was no return fire. After we got a good number of hits, I decided to move off his starboard side to administer the coup de grace. As we did this, they opened up on us, using a light flak gun previously unseen. I immediately ordered a crash dive, but it was too late. The damage was already done. We hit bottom, and attempted to effect repairs. As our boat flooded, we could hear the enemy ship sinking... mutual destruction!

USS Bogue (CVE-9) with a company of 6 Clemson Class Destroyers on anti submarine warfare exercises southwest of Ireland.
I picked up radar signals to the northeast and dove the UBoat.
Assessing heading I turned 180 160 meters all ahead flank. Sea State was very rough.
I order ahead slow when I felt the group was within range.
Periscope depth ... as I reached the surface scope up tube one outer doors opened the Carrier was 20 degrees starboard of my position at about 2000 meters. I was well inside the screen and the lead destroyer had already passed.
I did the calculations in my head from a visual only. I fire 1,2,3 at angle 30,35,35 and tube 4 at angle 40 degrees.
Torpedo 1,2,3 all passed astern while tube 4 hit the starboard bow.:yeah:
I was frustrated :/\\!!at my calculations but dove to 160 meters all ahead flank. Sonar seems to have the carrier slowing. Passing perpendicular to its last known course I order hard over to starboard. I could hear the escorts coming in behind me but I was sure my depth and speed would have me well in front of their attack position when they arrived.
All ahead slow. Waiting ... carrier sonar bearing slowing and decreasing in range. Depth charges in the water approximately 2000 meters astern. They did not hear me.:har:
:rock:ALL AHEAD FLANK:rock:
The carrier sound signature was very slow and I went to periscope depth to have a look. The carrier was at 010, in her zig-zag she had positioned herself right in front of me and I was staring at her stern, full on. I adjusted coarse to make her 000. FIRE 1!!
Torpedo 1 struck hard on her stern right on the rudder and screw.:yeah: I order 160 meters ahead slow :salute:knowing the attention of the escorts would now be diverted to my position. All quite!!:yep:
As I slowly drifted downwards and now under the crippled carrier :shifty:...
