You can't name a child Messiah.

The judge might be wise to study up on it..

Brilliant, just brilliant. Must deserve an award for sticking her oar in.

I also like the following quote fromt the mother, along with the statistic. :har:

She says Messiah is unique and she liked how it sounded alongside the boy's two siblings — Micah and Mason.

Messiah was No. 4 among the fastest-rising baby names in 2012, according to the Social Security Administration's annual list of popular baby names.

That sure is unique. Makes a nice change from something in Game of Thrones though. :)

I was just going to post this.

So now we're telling people what they can and can't name their kids? Does every girl named "Mercedes" have to change her name because the word is a trademark and it's a trademark that has only been earned by one company?

Sounds like the judge let her personal religious beliefs enter into this one.

No, they wouldn't have to change their name, just pay Mercedes a handsome fee. :-?

So Mexican mothers in that county can no longer name their boys "Jesus"?

I once knew a woman who named her boy "Concrete", because he was the one solid thing in her life. But you can't legislate stupidity any more than morality. This judge seems bent on doing both. I'm sure it will be overturned at a higher court.

It can be easily shown that the car was named for Mercédès Jellinek (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes_Jellinek), so the woman came first. :sunny:

It seems the first names King and Messiah are on the rise among some. Parents should be careful to put such pure or strong names on children, but it's their business.

Dumb move by the judge

I've told the story before about Warner Brothers Studios threatening to sue the Marx Brothers over the title of their movie A Night In Casablanca, since WB used "Casablanca" first. Groucho said he'd counter-sue, since he and his were using "Brothers" first.

I recall when Grace Slick gave birth to her daughter in the early 70's, she made a sarcastic remark to the tiresome question "What are you going to name her?" Grace simply said "God" and a mini-firestorm erupted from the Nixonian Right, even though the remark was not serious...

In the end, Grace's daughter was named 'China'. I do not recall any objection from Chairman Mao for using the title of his country as a baby name...

Here are a couple of links to articles about baby naming laws:

Here are a couple of links to articles about baby naming laws:
I read the first one and said "I'm glad we don't have anything like that here."

Then I dowloaded and read the second one and said "Holy Hanna! Really?" :o

I can't believe some of the silly laws different states apply! A Mexican couple in California can't name their kid José, because they have to use "The 26 characters of the English Alphabet". On the other hand they can name the boy "Adolph Hitler".

In some states the baby has to bear the father's surname unless the father is unknown. In others if the couple is unmarried the baby has to bear the mothers surname unless both parents sign a legal document stating otherwise. So if a widow gives birth the baby has to bear her maiden name, because the father isn't there to sign the document.

In some states an unmarried mother can give the baby her surname or the father's, but no others.

There's a lot of entertaining, enlightening, astonishing and downright frightening in that paper.

[edit] Reading further, I love the law in some countries that insists that the first name be gender-specific. This would cause problems here in the US where "Beverly" and "Doris" used to be men's names but are now exclusively female. Everybody knows about Noah and the Ark, but how many know that one of King David's daughters was named "Noah"?

[edit 2] Now I read about states with laws that say they place no restrictions on names, but the author asks what if the parents want to call their child by a particularly vile epithet? I remember the book Damnation Alley (the movie of the same name wasn't nearly as good, but that's another story). The main character is asked about his odd name. He explains that when he was born the nurse asked his father what he wanted to name the boy. The father said "Hell!" and walked away in disgust, never coming back. So the character's name is Hell Tanner.

I want to be called Forsupper.:D
And now for something completely different...

My mother' given forename was Iona. Now peruse the ancestry thread and put that with the Surname. Then imagine telling that name to a police officer.

WPer the request of Steve:

What you should be "waiting to hear" is a denouncement and objection by those on the "right" to this ruling. I for one think the ruling is idiocy, not supportable in any way by law, and the Magistrate who made this ruling should be excoriated and then tossed out of their office permanently.

Regardless of whether I agree or disagree with the reasoning, the fact is that in a Court, the Law must be the determining factor, and it clearly was not in this case. As such, the ruling should be immediately vacated and the Magistrate held accountable.

And many here will say I am pretty "Far Right" to boot....

Actually, tossing out first is excoriating to a judge and it saves time in the stupidity penalty phase. :arrgh!:

I'm sure that judge was probably elected to the bench. Now somebody needs to beat her with it. The mother and father of that child were only in dispute as to what the child' surname was to be and the judge stepped way over her bounds.
Where do these Buy Bull roaches come from?

Dictators really suck!
