I've come across another little gem of a museum, this one about 10 mins from Hannover airport. Luftfahrtmuseum Hannover-Laatzen (http://www.luftfahrtmuseum-hannover.de/) (Hannover Laatzen aviation museum) has about 30 aircraft which tells the tale of German aviation. There are also models of just about every German aircraft you can imagine and a load of other exhibits such as engines, uniforms and an 88mm flak.

It was originally set up by the owner of a local haulage firm and is still privately owned and the owner took part in an expedition to recover four Ju52 which had sunk in a Norwegian lake during WW2 when the ice melted - one of these was restored to pristine condition with the remainder either being cannibalised to create the pristine one or exhibited as parts.

The first aircraft are WW1 era:

The 109G2 they have has been recoverd from the Mediterranean sea in the 80ies. It has been restored to pristine condition as well (even on the inside, I was once lucky enough to take a seat in it:D).

No Fokker Dr.VII I'm afraid - it's a small collection but uses models to tell the tale of German aviation from the earliest balloons, through airships then powered aviation. A few more WW1 and inter-war aircraft:

I got talking to a guy who I think is one of the curators (my German is passable at best but his English was very good) and he explained that the guy who set the museum up made a lot of money from his haulage firm and invested it in his museum. He retired when he reached 65 and spent a lot of his time working on these projects but unfortunately he died two years ago. Fortunately the museum survives.

There are only three WW2 aircraft in the collection, but I think they are good choices:

All three aircraft are restored originals - the Spitfire is the only Mark XIV in a German museum, the Bf109 was recovered (as Schroeder as said) from the Med in 1988 and the Fw190 is the first original restoration of this type in a German museum.

Hey,
i was there a few months ago :D
I live near Hannover, and we are visiting museums around here - have although not seen the Panzer museum you wrote about recently yet.
But i see this plumber's nightmare (Chieftain) in front of the english barracks everytime when i drive to Bergen :03:
Nice photos, and the ME 109 engine is a restored one as far as i know. They also have one of the FW 190's BMW engines on display in front of the FW 190.

I became interested in flying long ago because my father had worked at the Junkers works at Dessau before WW2, and told me a lot about all kinds of planes, and especially the 52 /3m. So i followed the raise of the Junkers in Norway closely, i think Mr Leonhardt was the driving force behind that, and the Laatzen museum.
I am currently visiting the places where the pre-war (ww1) airship hangars and landing places were, indeed we just were in Friedrichshafen in the Zeppelin archive to find out about a distant relative having been on board the LZ104/L59, and details this particular airship.

Thanks and greetings,
Catfish

Greetings Catfish,

I cycle past the Chieftain on my way to work every day. I've spent a fair amount of time in museums this summer but never thought to take a camera to work!

I've always been interested in aircraft - as a teenager I used to volunteer for restoration work at Cosford and I was lucky enough to get my pilots licence when I was 17. Unfortunately flying became far too expensive so it's now lapsed, but I still love seeing the aircraft and WW2 aircraft still remain the most iconic for me.

Since buying SH3 I've turned into a warship geek (mostly thanks to Subsim!) but aircraft remain my first love.

Last of the pics. There was an awesome collection of scale models from the earliest attempts at flight to the latest aircraft (up to the F-22 and F-35). Tempting though it was to photograph them all, I decided to stick to two GWX favourites then those in my new mod (shameless plug here ):
