I know Jamie will be interested but well worth a viewing and of interest to others I suspect:

Good to see the conservation work is starting to pay off on items like the props. Not entirely surprised that they might struggle to put her up the right way again, she's going to be in a very delicate condition even after the conservation work has finished. They would probably be better off designing the exhibit to show her position on the sea bed rather than in flying mode.

Thanks for posting, Jim!

EDIT: And a quick google search shows the 'bits that were lying around' to be a bomb rack.

It's bomb rack.
Line above it:
Trag 5 Schloß 50/X ("ß" pronounced "sss")
5 rounds 50Kg (let me see if I can find correct translation)
I believe the 50/X is specific to max load (50Kg) on each shackle.

Trag (abbreviation for Trager) = rack/carrier (thanks James D!!)
Schloß = Clasp, Padlock, Bolt, (and Castle, Chateau, Manor)

Shortened name could effectively mean
"Carrier for 5 Clasps (shackles) for 50 Kg loads"

Also, from the RAF Museums facebook page (which I did not know they had...time to go find it and add it) an internal shot showing the cockpit area looking back down the fuselage:

It's about high time that you finally repair it! After all you were the ones to break it in the first place!:nope:
Once you're done with this one there are about 2200 more to go that you broke too!:stare:

:O:

In seriousness can this thing really be restored to a presentable state? I guess it would be easier to build one new from scratch.

:haha: And likely broken by a Defiant too!

In regards to restoration, if by a presentable state you mean in a similar manner to most of the other aircraft in the BOB exhibit in the RAF Museum then I would have to say that it's very unlikely, however once the sea debris has been removed and the metal has had a chance to get all of the nasties out of it, she will likely go on display 'as is', that is to say with battle damage and crash damage intact. There's a Halifax in the Bomber Hall in the museum that is in a similar condition after it was recovered from a fjord in Norway where it crashlanded after bombing the Tirpitz.
Like so:

That is likely how she'll be displayed, unfortunately it seems that she might have to stay on her back due to stress on the airframe, but we'll see. There's a lot of talk about some sort of augmented reality Dornier and hi-tech wizardry bringing it to life, but I'll just be happy to see a piece of history frozen in time. Some people say that you don't get much from a rusted wreck, but others say that you get more than from a factory fresh aircraft. I can see both viewpoints, but I agree with the decision not to do a full restoration, there's just too much that could go wrong and since she's the only surviving Do-17 in the world, you just can't take a chance like that. By all means, I would fully support, and likely donate to, an attempt to create a replica for display, I think it'd look fantastic next to the 111 and 88 they have there already, but leave the original be. She's been through enough already. :yep:

Thanks for sharing Jim. Interesting photos. Oberon, I can see both points of restoration also. I do think it may be more interesting to leave it in it's battle damaged state and have a replica next to it.

In 2010 the he Royal Air Force Museum London announced the discovery of a Dornier Do 17 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dornier_Do_17), a light German bomber, buried off the coast of Kent, England. In June 2013 it was successfully raised from the seabed. Wargaming.net has helped sponsor the restoration of the plane which will be ongoing through 2015. They have now announced the final resting place after restoration is completed.

Wargaming and RAF Museum Announce Dornier 17 Final Resting Place

May 12, 2014 — Wargaming today announced the Dornier Do17 aircraft’s final resting place at the Royal Air Force Museum in Cosford, Shropshire, United Kingdom upon completion of the restoration in 2015.

In 2013, Wargaming and the Royal Air Force Museum set out to restore the only known surviving Dornier Do17 aircraft and provide visitors with the opportunity to view the renovation process and learn more about its history and role throughout World War II. The exhibit currently features restored pieces of the plane and upon completion next year, the Dornier Do17 aircraft will be featured alongside the Wargaming.net Interpretation Zone.

Additionally, to celebrate the opening of the Wargaming.net Interpretation Zone on Feb. 28, Wargaming and the RAF Museum launched a mobile application, Apparition, using augmented reality to view a virtual version of the aircraft flying over the museum. Users were encouraged to submit photos of the hundreds of virtual Do17’s from around the world, and the top 15 photos from Australia, UK, Ukraine, Philippines, Mexico and the USA were chosen to be on display at the exhibit.

“Offering people around the world to participate in each step of the Dornier Do17 renovation process has been a truly gratifying experience,” said Tracy Spaight, Special Projects Director at Wargaming. “As a company heavily invested in the preservation of military history, we feel it’s important to show our gratitude and appreciation towards these unique relics.“
