So how to you folks from Britain feel about this?:
http://wattsupwiththat.com/2013/08/06/law-of-unintended-consequences-number-eleventy-zillion/#more-91046
True there's a lot less bad pollutants released compared to coal(90% less mercury for ex.) but how much more wood has to be burned to match the same output from coal?
If it's cheaper than coal and has the same energy output then I'm for it. Most of our coal comes from Germany now anyway.

Coal vs Wood pellets... In BTU's per ton, coal wins hands down....
http://www.ehow.com/about_5597091_wood-pellets-vs_-coal.html
I heat my home with Anthracite coal because it's cheaper than any other fuel and I just happen to live where Anthracite is king. The linked article quotes 2009 prices. That's changed about $100.00 per ton since then. But still, I can heat my home through the winter for an average of $300.00 to $600.00. Even if we have a long cold winter.
I would expect the price to rise if global demand increased. China buys a lot of it now. Probably the reason for the jump in price in a relatively short period of time.
If Britain and the EU start burning pellets then maybe my cheap fuel will remain cheap or get cheaper. Maybe China should start using pellets too. I'm sure they have plenty of timber resources.

We used to use Anthracite on the Rayburn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rayburn_Range) IIRC, good stuff, doesn't burn quite as hot as other coal but it burns longer and at a consistent heat.
We don't use the Rayburn any more since it tried to kill us (CO, long story) so we use standard coal on the living room fire. It is not cheap though, not cheap at all, we buy in the summer before the winter prices come in but even then it's about £6.88 at the moment, and will probably clock up to £7 a bag by the end of the month when the winter prices start.

Most definitely true but Mr Wilson did not close them to make a profit for his mates like the bloody Tories did.

I use a Liesure Line coal stoker like this one...

Thermostat controlled blowers and stoker feed is great!
It was made in a town just over the ridge from my home. Purchased from one of the inventors and a former partner in the company who now just sells them out of a small store not far from here.

Do the Left seriously claim that Harold Wilson was accepting economic realities while Margaret Thatcher was motivated by sheer spite?
That argument flatlined many years ago.

I would be all for that if they could find a better method of disposing of the waste. Locking it up in a salt mine is temporary at best and sticking it in tank ammo kind of spreads it all over the place. Hmm, maybe that's the real reason for the actions in Iraq and Afghanistan?

I was wondering that myself but it seems half of the existing nuclear facilities are to close in the next decade and there seemed to be a lot of foot dragging about getting anymore built:
http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/markets/article-2046213/Britains-nuclear-future-bright-firms-look-exit-strategy.html
However, this newer article shows they have made a commitment to get 2 new plants built but they won't be ready till sometime mid 2020's.

I would say Thatchers approach to the miners as well as many other sectors was driven by her flawed political ideology more than economic realities.

Yea, in the next county over uranium ore has become an issue. So much of it that it's basically coming out of the ground. One man owns about 4000 acres that has enough ore to supply all the plants in the US for about 3 years. Those that want to drill say it's safe as long as they follow proper methods, those that are against it, site numerous issues. The waste would have to be properly stored for 1000 years.
