Hi subsimmers,

After following a few convoys & trying to request assistance from the BDU
(wolfpacks), i'm getting incredibly frustrated with my inability to send radio
messages or contact updates when my is boat below 5 meters.
So in the hope of preserving my sanity & enjoyment of SH5 I dived in my Data folder
hoping to find a way to change the depth at which I can send radio messages.
But I failed miserably, the only thing I found was from TDW's UI user options: “BelowThisDepthDontReceiveRadio = 14”

My question for the subsim modding community: How do I change the depth at
which I can send radio messages?

Greeting from Belgium,
Bubba

You can send radio messages only on the surface at the moment..

Although the news isn't good, many thanks for the quick reply.

All I want to do is change the depth to 8 meters, by doing that messages can
be send in bad weather and when sailing with deck's awash (7,5m).
Nothing unrealistic about that ;)

I was wondering about u-boats sending messages at periscope or snorkel depth
but it's hard to find info on that.

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=2095126&postcount=2 I was wrong, the option I spoke of was for receiving radio messages. Although it stands to reason, if you can't send, you can't receive. Not quite sure why it works that way.

I'll have to look and see what the game says as far as sending messages while not surfaced :hmmm:

Indeed, it isn't unrealistic at all, unlike some think that a U-boot was able to receive messages on VLF whilst submerged at shallow (and i'm not exactly sure what measurements shallow constitutes) depth, using DF-loop antenna.

Snorkel-equipped U-boats carried a drum-shaped aerial atop the snorkel which enabled them to transmit and receive HF while snorkeling.

Just don't overdo the edits, once a solution is found, otherwise BDU will wonder what you are doing :haha:

EDIT:
Just came across this gem where a radio operator, the lone survivor of U-869 gives his story:

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/military/sole-survivor-of-u869.html

Pertinent is this:

All messages were repeated at night by an automatic transmitter on the longest wavelengths. You didn't even have to surface to receive them; you could receive them at a depth of up to 30 meters (100 feet).
