1 Aug 13 Deutsches Panzermuseum Munster [picture heavy]

Just up the road from me is the town of Munster which also happens to contain the German National Tank Museum (http://www.panzermuseum-munster.de/home.html). The museum is part funded by the Stadt and part by the Bundeswehr and is pretty unique, both because the Germans produced many of the iconic tanks of WW2 and because Germany is one of the few countries which used both Western and Eastern block armoured vehicles during the Cold War which were then retained following reunification.

It has every type of mainstream Panzer from WW2 (although a few of them have still got the shell holes where they were taken out of action) and many of the Leopard series of tanks, as well as a Merkava and a few other types such as a contemporary flail tank.

The stated aim of the museum is to put every tank in their collection into full mechanical working order and during their Open Days they drive them around for the crowds - I can imagine that seeing a column of German tanks from WW2 is pretty impressive (the next Open Day is 1 Sep 13). This is partially achieved by the Bundeswehr sending their mechanics to help work on the vehicles while the Stadt maintain the buildaings and staff. If you ever visit this neck of the woods it's definitely worth a half-day visit.

Another good place for tanks in Germany would be Koblenz. It's much lesser knows as the Munster museum and is unfortunately run only by the Bundeswehr, so there's no PR, and only a crappy page - however it's open to the public. :o This sounds amazing. I would really love to see the AV7 in working condition - though prefer not to be inside it when it runs. It must have been a hellish place for the crew, wwith no noise or heat protection at all.

Lovely shots D....how does the place compare to Bovington?

It's very similar to Bovvy - Bovington is physically larger and has a greater collection of international tank (the only non-German one I saw in Munster was the Merkava) but I think they have similar sized collections, so Munster allows a direct comparison between Warsaw Pact and NATO armoured vehicles which Bovington doesn't.

It was interesting to see three BMPs parked next to one another and directly opposite their Western counterparts and it was also interesting to see how US and Western tanks got bigger, taller and heavier while their Warsaw Pact contemporaries got smaller and remained roughly the same weight (allowing greater operational mobility).

The best contemporary armoured vehicle collection I've seen is at Shrivenham, but it's not easy to get into (a bit like the small arms collection in Warminster).

:oops: The A7V is the only vehicle that's a replica, but they're working off original plans to try and bring her back to life. Europe wasn't too kind to Germany after WW1.

Very impressive collection indeed, including a Sturmtiger, didn't think any of those still existed, and the self-propelled Pak-40 I'd never even heard of before! Interesting looking machine, I imagine married together out of necessity to have a mobile AT against the Soviet forces that wasn't as expensive to produce as the StuG or more standard assault vehicles.

And of course...PANTHER! :yeah: The Ausf. A, not my favourite version but still probably my favourite German tank. :up:

The T34 had a nice hole, as did the Tiger. I'm not sure what got it but given the depth of the armour it must have been at really close range and probably not survivable for the crew.

It was interesting to see that some of the vehicles had been gifted back to Germany in the 1950s. It seems that Germany as a nation was forgiven by the 50s and that other nations were interested in maintaining some of the military cultural heritage - the U995 was also given back in the same time period. Maybe it's a case of the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

I've done my service in the army on a Leopard for a couple of years. We would have feared the T 72 the most. I guess they removed the reactive armour for security reasons (explosive components)...

I'm a huge fan of the Leopard 2. I've been fortunate enough to work with the Canadians (training) and Danish (definitely not training) and it's an excellent tank and produced in sufficient numbers to be internationally recognised as such. With its optics plus its firepower (and the current operating environment) it's a genuine 2 mile sniper.

You're not alone! I had a couple (a platoon) of Leo 1 A 3. Everything had to be done manually: rangefinding, type of ammo and so on. Handmade shooting, so to speak...
Leo 1 A 5 was a step forward (or back, depending on the point of view) with that laser stuff.

Leo 2 seems to me like playing world of tanks.

A good Leo 1 gunner puts out the first and only needed shot within five seconds - like the Leo 2 does. But without any electronical support.

I'm an AFV man and the current UK main armament is steam driven - it's an offshoot of the Bofors AA gun of WW2 but is still in service and has proven itself having been in constant combat since Gulf War 1.

The UKs new AFV is going to have an automatic stabilised gun and is sophisticated enough to need a fire control computer. When put alongside the new thermal optics it's going to mean a whole different ballgame. It'll be interesting to see whether the World of Tanks generation appreciates the intricacies of real gunnery (breaking lay to tighten the gears, trunnion tilt etc.).

Unfortunately that's the lot. I foolishly forgot to take a spare battery pack and ran out of juice just as I reached the last hall so there's no pictures of the Merkava or the flail tank (and couple of others).

Ugh, the Rarden, not a bad gun but the six round/three round clip at all times is a bit of a pain in the arse, and the cause of many misfires if the commander doesn't keep a count of how many rounds he's fired....and then of course, there's the chaingun which was designed by someone who had probably never seen a gun in his life.

The chain gun was originally the gun on the front of the Apache (until they upgraded to 30mm) which they then inverted and put in an AFV. The CG is good as long as you know how to look after it - too much or too little grease and she'll have a stoppage. Add to that the problem with stretched link and the fact that some of them are over 20 years old (you can see the stretched chain scraping the inside of the bottom half on the really bad ones) and there are a few issues, but nothing a good crew can't deal with.

The new one keeps the same CG but it's mounted differently which solves most of these issues.
