Version 1.5 through Steam

They ran a sale and bundled original and expansion when I bought it. They're good about sales (frequent) and will tell you when any game on your wishlist is on one.

I run TMO 2.5, RSRDC, and OTC 1.5 without any issues. JSGME works fine and rather than having to reinstall I just disable all mods and click Verify Integrity of Game Cache and Steam makes sure my install is clean so I can re-mix the mod soup when that urge hits me. I did have to manually set the .exe to be able to use all the RAM (the >4 gb patch doesn't work) using the instructions in this thread. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?p=2009762#post2009762

Steam isn't perfect but it's definitely fully functional as far as playing and modding SH4 is concerned. A Steam copy of the game need not be a limitation to anyone's experience.

what happens is they advertise the sh4 game at a really cheap price and "hide" or not make it clear that it is the older 1.3 version of the game so people have to go back to buy the v1.5 ad-on for the game making them more money.

yes they also sell the v1.5 included version of the game but they don't tell that to someone unless they know to ask about if they are getting the most recent version of the game and in doing so they take advantage of those who do not know.

so steam plays dirty with it to try and turn one sale into two so when dealing with steam it is buyer beware.

I don't use Steam so this isn't a problem for me but some of my friends do and they have told me they do stuff like that a fair amount of the time.

I'm not particularly fond of Steam. I play the Total War series as well and they require Steam even for the disk installs so I have it. I never would have gotten any Silent Hunter game had they not advertised them though so I can't gripe too loud. (When you start Steam to play a game they pop up ads for the stuff they have on special. I read them just to see what I'm missing because I don't buy PC Gamer or anything like that.) I ended up getting SH3 for like $4.99 and SH4 and U-boats for $7.99 or so purely because they were running ads for them.

The other thing that Steam does that I appreciate is make it so that I don't have to carry disks around. I travel a lot and actually left my cds at home when I went over-seas for six weeks. Because a good portion of my games are on Steam I didn't have to do anything illegal to play. Reinstalls aren't required, moving computers is just copying the steamapps directory across and remembering what that password that you saved three years ago and haven't typed since is.

Again, not too fond of Steam; playing games with no internet connection is often trying. But they've been a net positive as far as I'm concerned and you can most definitely have version 1.5 of SH4 as a Steam game.

But if you buy the disk from a store, then you're still getting it from middle-men. You're also jumping through the store's hoops to play the game, and if it's a store with a no-refund policy then you're doing the exact same thing, except the disk might be damaged, so then you have to do the whole thing again. So why not do it from the comfort of your on home?

Fat chance of ever finding a disk version of SHIII, SH4, or SHV.....their too long in the tooth to find in a bricks and mortar store.

I bought my last copy of SH4 Gold Edition for under $8.00 from iNetVideo (http://www.inetvideo.com/products/silent-hunter-iv-wolves-of-the-pacific-gold-edition-pc)....took all of three days to come to the house!? The price has gone up from a year ago.....but so has a gallon of milk.

I've got one of the original CD disks of the game (version 1.0), bought at its release. To patch it to version 1.5 UbiSoft had us buy the damn patch for an additional $10.00 as a download. Direct 2 Drive (D2D) was where I purchased the download. If you mod your game at all, the need to reinstall a fresh copy is going to happen. Its just the way it is with mods.....files are going to become corrupt. As a specific amount of time passed, D2D would not accept your conformation number for an additional download. You had to talk to Customer Service and get a new conformation number just to download something you had purchased earlier. Without your control, D2D sells itself to another company, making it all the harder to confirm your original purchase of 4 years earlier!!

I have one current Steam game, the (relatively) new Xcom. I also have the original and TFTD. Anyway, Steam verifies my installation almost daily...as if I'm some pirate selling images of the game or something.

When I just want to jump on and check/reply to e-mail quickly with a real keyboard, that insidious "verifying installation" screen can be a real drag... I'm close to deep-sixing the whole mess.

That never happens to me. I've got Team Fortress 2, Silent Hunter III and Cry of Fear.
