I have S/H 4 and while still getting use to it I would like to know if there are any cheats,such as unlimited torpedos and unlimited deck gun ammo.

As I am still fairly new to gaming, perhaps I worded my question wrongly, sorry about that.

I'd say he has every reason to be angry. He says he's new to gaming and is looking for something to make it easier to learn, and you tell him he's cheating. I think you could try to help rather than just criticize.

I don't know as much as I'd like about unlimited ammo, since I've never used it myself, but soon enough someone will come along who knows more about it. I understand there are mods that make the torpedoes more powerful, but I'm having trouble even finding those.

The big problem is that all of the Silent Hunter series are flawed, and need mods to some point just to make the game run properly. Then there are many mods that make the game look better, play better and be more realistic.

For SH3 and SH4 you can't play properly without certain mods, and you can have a lot more fun with certain others.

you have a right to have your opinion and he has every right to have his own wants and needs for what he wants out of the game.

here at subsim we pride ourselves on being friendly and helpful so why inject your own opinion of what the game should be and imply his desires are somehow wrong. your comments can be seen as being rude to a new member even if that is not how you meant it to be.

steve click on the link in my sig "My Mods" and you will find a good many small mods that make small but important changes to the game to make it more easy to enjoy.

to start the torpedo and deck gun mods will serve as your "cheats" until you get used to the game and then you can move into some of the realism mods that increase the difficulty to match your increased skill set.

as you get to be a veteran in the game you can start into the area of manual targeting which is like math class but will be very satisfying once learned.

welcome aboard and you will love this game.

also make sure you have v1.5 of the game, that's the one with the UBM ad-on patch you have to buy. almost all mods are made for that game version so it really is needed to play the game. if you stick with v1.4 of the game there are very few mods for that game version you can choose from

I'll be brief:

If you'll tick-out all the realism settings, you'll have your game almost with cheats:

Your fuel won't deplete, so you can always go on flank speed and round convoys.
Your sensors will be much better then your enemies' and you will find them sooner and can plot your course to get very close.
With automatic targeting system - it's much easier. You only have to lock the periscope on enemy and enable TDC updating (don't remember, how it's on English).
Same is for map contacts update.

You can download Webster's improved torpedos, so you'll sink almost every merchant from one torpedo.

The point is.... If you want cheats for some other aspects of the game... there will be not much gameplay actually for you to play! You'll get bored!
So bring realism to 0 and try like this.

This game has a steep learning curve. I'd advise "cheating", to learn each aspect of the game. If you go 100% realism at first, you will get frustrated and quit. There aren't "cheats", per se, but you can tick off/on different game parameters to suit your needs.

Manual plotting/targeting in this game is not a skill you will learn overnight, it takes practice and work to figure it out.

Get U-boat Mission which is version 1.5 (if you don't already).

When starting a game / campaign (after entering a name, port of departure, starting date and so on) you'll find yourselve standing behind your desk looking at a map on the wall, look to the left and you'll see a bookshelve, move your mouse over it and you see some books highlight with 'options' lighting up. Thats the place to set every setting to easy / 0% realisme.

There is a supermod for SH4 called Trigger Maru Overhauled, or TMO. It makes the Japanese ASW very tough. So, to make it easier for inexperienced players to learn, there is a version called TMOwTW - TMO with Training Wheels. I never heard anyone suggest that it was a cheat.

Not at all! I think, every member of Subsim is glad to help a newcomer, especially if this game is new for him.
And every captain picks his own difficulty level. As for me - I find it too difficult playing without contacts update on the map. But without manual targeting system it's too boring for me, because it becomes that I don't have much to do in game.

What is any game for? For having fun! So decide, what difficulty allows you to have the most fun, and play accordingly! If it'll start to get too easy - change it, download some mods etc.

And feel free to ask any questions about the game. Believe me, you'll have plenty of them! :yep:

For starters you can load up my Slightly Subnuclear Deck Gun (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=172) mod. Well the shells are what you'd expect but there is a hidden bonus. Pop a few 40mm shells into a DD and let me know what happens. Heh, heh, heh.......

But if you think you might not live long enough to surface there's always my Slightly Subnuclear Mark 14 and Cutie (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=171) mod. One torpedo will skeletonize an aircraft carrier really well and I guarantee an end to your frustration.

Here's a single hit from an armor piercing shell on an aircraft carrier. Hold your ears....

Long ago I realized that "cheats", in the gaming world, is a code word for "making it easy". There are some puzzle games (Tomb Raider mainly) that I'm too stupid to do by myself. That doesn't mean I don't like them. When someone asks for Silent Hunter "cheats" I take it to mean he knows nothing about the game at all but wants to learn, and needs all the help he can get. I figure when he starts to understand what it's really all about he'll try it different ways.

I used to complain about cheating a lot, but it was always directed at the people who bragged about their insane tonnage scores. If you're not playing at 100% then you have nothing to brag about.

I have nothing to brag about. Externaly views? They had no such thing. If you use external views then technically you're cheating. Weapons Officer Assistance? Not entirely unrealistic except for the part where he's perfect. I use him anyway, because my math isn't up to those standards and trigonometry is beyond me. Unlimited torpedoes would be a great learning tool, so I'm all for it. I usually play at a fairly high difficulty level, and I make it a point to conduct my attacks in a historical manner, which keeps my scores fairly low, and I always reload my torpedoes deep underwater and never while under attack, since steep dive angle can play havock with a ton of metal riding on a chain hoist.

My point is that there are various levels of "cheating", and we all do it to a degree.

I agree. There is a big difference between using something so you can learn the game, and just using it to make it easy.

I don't use map-contacts in my career, but for learning the game, or testing out a mission/mod/whatever, it is very valuable.

We didn't hear from their 100,000 ton club after that...:haha::haha::haha:

Just to add, there are TWO places for options, in the main menu and when you are in port, Sometimes you change options in the main menu and they are not reflected in your game play until you change them in port. Annoying.
