I haven't been here at Subsim for a while. Downloaded SH5 onto my Windows 8 Laptop. The game ran perfectly, but I just didn't like the feel of it. So, with the help of the awesome Jimbuna, I installed SHIII plus the GWX mod. It all runs perfectly. Glad to be back. :)

GWX works perfectly, but SH3 Commander fails to run the game. As it's loading, I get a 'Silent Hunter 3 has stopped running' message. Not a big deal at all, but has anyone experienced this?

do you have the commander files for GWX?
other possibility is that your SH3 folder needs permissions added for full write permissions sometimes that was the fix for my Win7 computer

Couldn't get Commander to work. uninstalled it. I can always download it again at some point if I can figure out how to get it to work. :)

Do not install the game, or Silent Hunter 3 Commander, in the default location in Program Files. SH3 Commander is probably trying to save some files in there and Windows won't let it. It's a UAC thing. Which can be avoided by installing the game and SH3 Commander into a custom created folder on your harddisk: like C:\games\SilentHunter3 and C:\Games\SH3Commander.

SHIII needs CMDR. You should keep working on it until you have it running properly. If the above advice doesn't do the job keep coming back for help and we will get it working for you.

I'm pleased your almost sorted but in an ideal world it is always better to install onto a separate drive, D for example, if you have one.

I'm fine without SH3 Commander. I really only used it to set crew fatigue to zero and to start missions at sea. no biggie. :)

Rgr that but hopefully everything will be working as expected eventually.

I think I need to uninstall and reinstall SH3. Do I need to download all the GWX files again, or can I reinstall SH3 and use the current GWX files?

Jimbuna

Keep the GWX files in a separate folder and use them as often as you require them.

I have responded to your PM :salute:

Thanks, Jim. I've come to the conclusion that SHIII isn't compatible with Windows 8. Everything worked perfectly for me on Windows 7, but with 8, the game won't run for me. Not on its own, and not with GWX or Commander. It was working, but now it isn't....even after an uninstall and reinstall. So I'm going to leave it for now. :)

SHIII, SHIV, and CMDR all work perfectly on my Windows 8. There is nothing in the operating system that will prevent it from running.

I can't explain it then. I set it up exactly the same way I did with W7. it worked perfectly on 7. Doesn't work for me on 8.

Where in Windows 8 do I set my full Admin rights? I have made sure that I have full Admin rights on the SHIII folder, and GWX and Commander folders, but is there somewhere sneaky that I also need to set full Admin rights in 8?

Do you have for example a C and a D drive?

If so, put it in the D drive.

TDK1044

I just have a C Drive Jim, but I put the game in C:\Ubisoft\Silenthunter3. GWX and Commander are in different locations. When installing GWX, I select the SH3 root directory. That's correct isn't it?

Jimbuna

Yes as far as I'm aware but I don't have W8 and am running GWX on W7 D drive.

I think there's some sneaky Admin setting in W8 somewhere. I just haven't found it yet. :)

Keep on it and send Irish a PM asking him his settings.

GWX works perfectly, but SH3 Commander fails to run the game. As it's loading, I get a 'Silent Hunter 3 has stopped running' message. Not a big deal at all, but has anyone experienced this? Usually signs of leftovers from a previous install, as some modded files don't match with the rest that SH3 is loading. Are you sure you did a full clean install, with registry settings clean?

I don't have that level of knowledge, Pisces. Is there an idiot's guide I could follow? :) Or let me ask this....If I uninstalled the game again and then installed it again but in a different directory, would that work?

Start here:

Uninstall then clean the registry files before reinstalling.

If you or somebody can partition your C drive into a C and a D that would also help.

Not sure what you mean matey but if your referring to the registry cleaning software CrapCleaner is okay and it is free but I personally believe RegVac is better and there is a free trial version on the link I posted for you to try.

CCleaner came up with about a hundred reg faults.
Regvac zoomed in with about six-hundred!

I was amazed!!

though CCleaner is a good tool.

Defragler is also a good'un.

When you have that many you should always backup your registry before fixing or deleting them.

It's so interesting playing SH3 once more. When the game first came out, there was great excitement followed by frustration as the significant bugs in the game became obvious. The patches were then released, and by the time we got to 1.4 the game was very playable with some careful modding.

I remember that time as being very frustrating. Having to uninstall your mods because a new patch was about to be released. Then waiting for the modders to update their mods to make them compatible with the latest patch.

But as I return to the game now, running it with GWX and Commander, this game is beautiful to play. I prefer it to both of the Silent Hunter games that followed it. It runs very smoothly on my Windows 8 Laptop, and sitting there running the game with my headphones on, it is a very immersive game that's full of atmosphere.

So, the purists may have a hundred reasons why Silent Hunter 5 is better, but I run SH3 at about 75 percent realism and I'm having a ball.

what I noticed jim was that even though regvac picked up around 600 problems it only cleaned about 250. it said that windows wouldn't allow it to clean out the rest. is that because its the trial version?

Can't say mate...I've a purchased version but if that was the case I'd have thought they would inform you to try and get you to make a purchase.

if it is the one i am thinking of yeah it only will clean 250 issues as a trial. i personally use advanced system care from IObits and they have a free version that does ALMOST everything the paid version does.
