View Full Version : They almost got us

U 96 in AL 15 on March 23, 1942.
Surfaced at approx. 4:45 am, sky cloudy with moderate visibility.
Just get the crew settled into the watch-suddenly "Alarm aircraft".
Radar equipped Hudson in the dark, right on top of us. His aim was the only thing that saved us. Depth charges went off as I hit the crash dive.
All over in a matter of seconds. No one KIA or wounded.
Minor hull damage, was able to test dive to 158 meters.
Continuing patrol, but much wiser (scared) now.

Just be grateful you survived to fight another day!

Good luck for the rest of your patrol.

Had the same thing happen to me tonight in my IXb, in ED83, the same month and year even. Was too busy diving to check out what plane it was.
