Apologies if this has already been linked to, but I'm finding it interesting reading. It's a Masters thesis about the German Torpedo issues in the early days of WWII

Pretty good read so far, mostly stuff I've already learned. But it is crazy that the German Naval High Command/the ones that built an tested the torpedoes would not accept that it was their equipment that was faulty, they normally blamed the U-Boat commanders fault dues to nerves etc. Every time the Commanders were told the problems were fixed they were not fixed in reality. Look at the Operation Weserbung U-Boat Commanders reported that there were targets galore but more than half of the eels failed, it was later blamed on the part of the ocean extremely cold waters etc that caused the detonators to go faulty.

Sailor Steve found it a while ago, but no need to apologize. There will be people who haven't read it yet.

I can't remember all the details, but I recall the KM courts-martialed people for this. I think that goes a long way in explaining why they fixed their torpedo problems, faster than the USN fixed our torpedo problems.

The americans had similar issues and I am sure many boats would not have been lost if only the damn things had worked.

It's not one of those common things that everybody knows about. In fact it's quite rare.

Thanks for the repost. :sunny:
