So, has baseball season even started yet? Oh, the all-star game is tonight?

The Twins still stink, Red Sox are red hot. Wicked pissah! Atleast one team was able to fix their pitching woes.:dead:

Going to see the Twins-Mariners next week. Somebody has to win. I got wicked seats, right behind the visiting bench. Joe Mauer cult member.

Watching the home run derby. That must be a blast to be one of those kids playing in the outfield.

Tomorrow, I'm taking the kids to see our brand new minor league team, free kids jersey night.:woot:

CARDINALS FOR LIFE! AND WORLD SERIES 2013!

We have the best record in baseball right now. :arrgh!: I feel it in my gut...we can go all the way this year.

Went to a game on May 20-something against the Royals. Wore my Matt Holliday jersey and sat in the nosebleed with my friends. It was a good time. I love going to games and watching my team play America's game. :yeah:

Great thread. :sunny: I love baseball.

My local team SUCKS!

The blue jays are just not doing well, worst in their division! A few more years of this, and they will be down to Astros or Merlins level!

Ps: for a more through understanding of baseball, I really recommend moneyball the book. Great book.

I made a bet with my friend who is a Mets fan that the Mets would finish better than the Yankees. (Disgusted Yankee fan here. Nothing but injuries, if it wasn't for Mariano Rivera, they would be sunk, crap pitching, second string players at best. )

I guess I had my fun, in the past.

Kick A-rod out of baseball, please. I can only spend so many years tolerating that cheating playoff choke-artist...

All hail the Jeter! The only beacon on this team!

I've never watched American Idol but the winner of that show sang the national anthem and stunk up the place with her own version in front of many honored veterans. You could see some of them cringing on the line.

When will baseball insist the song be presented the way it is suppose to be and stop the disgraceful renditions.

Tom Seaver threw out the first pitch so the show is making a comeback.

Hey, we uses to have 2 baseball teams!

And than the expos folded.

Ahhhhh...I like baseball being a domestic thing with the US... :hmmm:

It gives me something to be proud of...this is America's Game... (even if the Northern Friends want to play, they can. Toronto is close enough to the border  )

I like that we have MLB... There are other international leagues but it just isn't the same.

Now if there was a world league too....I wouldn't mind... That would actually be pretty cool...A team from whichever countries want to participate...kinda like the olympics.

Just as long as America keeps her baseball the way it is. :sunny: Along with the leagues for the kids... If they ever take away our baseball, I will be seriously pissed...It's like taking Hockey from you Canadians. It can't be done. I'm not saying that we should shut out other countries...just simply that if it's good the way it is why fix it? I really enjoy it the way it is.

Now the players can come from other countries...our former powerhouse Albert Pujols was a great ballplayer... WAS! and he is Dominican. Everybody loved the guy. I have no problem with other countries sending people to play baseball. There's all kinds of great players from countries that aren't the US or Canada.

Sorry if this sounds kinda oddly worded or not making sense in some parts...Baseball is something in every American's blood IMO and it's something I feel strongly about (being my favorite sport and all :) )....and I've been awake for about 22 hours... I AM TIRED! :yep:

Baseball should be American. I'm just simply stating my opinion. It's good that you have an opinion. A lot of the European members here don't understand baseball...they are Cricket people...and we don't understand that. Everybody has their own game and has a right to that game. I just feel that baseball is ours. :know:

In Citi field, where my crosstown rivals, the Mets play, Mariano Rivera recieved a 2 minute standing ovation from not only the crowd, but from both benches.

(edit: BTW he pitched a 1-2-3 inning.)
(He is retiring after this year)

If you look at his save stats, no one is anywhere near catching or breaking his record.

He is the Babe Ruth of closers, and of course he is a Yankee.:O:

Every stadium he has been in, he actually got cheers as he came out from away team fans, which is big, because when he comes in, it means your team is losing.

Much class from the fans and both benches last nite, love or hate the Yankees, you have to admit, Rivera will be the best for a long time.

I once saw a documentary on him, where he showed how to make a glove from a milk carton, like he used in Panama as a kid.

Now a first ballot hall of famer, and a class act of a man. Great to fans, especially kids.

You invoked some questions from me. Just spawned some curiosity in me.

How does Canada feel about baseball? Is it like Hockey in the US where only the hardcores follow it? (NJ devils fan!)

MLB is only interested in franchising cities who could draw and sell Jersies.

Would it be viable in Canada, or is it somewhat "secondary" and just something that is there?

I would love to see more Canadian teams, the season is long enough to allow for it.

I agree with you too, the name "world series" should mean the world.

But the overpaid princesses may have to play more games, poor millionaires.

If the 1994 strike did not happen the Montreal Expos could have very well won the World Series that year. From there a new downtown stadium would have been built. More than likely the team would still be there today if that happened.

I still call them the Expos, and even get yelled at for it.

I just have a problem with them becoming decent, with MLB subsidies under the Washington Nationals banner.

When as the Expos, MLB let them fold, they failed to vet its inept owner, and he ran a franchise into the ground.

Kinda like Bud Selig, when he owned the Brewers, guess what, they still suck!

Give Montreal back a team!

I really believe in general expansion of the MLB to be honest. As I believe that if the sport is stuck as an America only thing, it would lose popularity as other sports slowly gain traction in the US.

Baseball isn't huge in Canada, but that's probably because we only have 1 team, and they suck really badly. They did do very well viewership wise back when they did good in the 90s though (Toronto's sports teams are generally of a poor quality, we have to take whatever we get). but than, the team has declined to such a poor state a few years back that they had to resort to selling tickets for 2$ (and still barely get people watching).

I believe in a general expansion of the MLB. some teams are struggling hard in the US, why not move them? The Marlins, Rays, A's, Astros and so on aren't doing very well financially in their current markets.

In my opinion, a second team in Canada is an easy decision. Montreal's Expos were ruined by a strike and Omar Minaya (worst manager in baseball?) A team in Montreal or Vancouver would be a good choice, as they can both support a major league baseball team. (as seen here: http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2013/6/21/4452550/the-next-mlb-city-the-top-10 )

Mexico city would also be a great choice, there is enough talent in the Mexican league (officially classed as AAA) to fill out a major league team, and it could increase the sport's popularity in the Hispanic American population.

Finally, if I was Bud Selig, I would even work with the Japanese leagues, making them into "major league" leagues. Play with them for a few weeks every season (162 games a season is boring if played against the same few teams every year). Fly all the American teams into a japan for 2 weeks or so, and do the opposite thing the next year. Hell, have the best North American team play the best Japanese team for the world series, at least it would make the name itself credible. the Japanese are actually very, very good, and can provide tough competition against the NL and AL with their more refined playing style

PS: if your stadium is less than half full most of the time, it means you should re-locate. If your stadium is less than half full even though your team is doing great, than you should definitely relocate.

I don't follow baseball as much as I used to. Loved going to see the Twins play at Met Staduim back in the 1960's! Killebrew, Allison, Oliva, Carew etc. Those were great games back then, except when the Yankees came to town. Couldn't shut down the likes of Mantle, Maris, Howard,Berra, Ford and company!

The All Star games back then were something to watch too. It wasn't often that you could see the likes of Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Orlando Cepeda, Matty Alou, Ernie Banks, Sandy Koufax, Bob Gibson,Juan Marichal, playing together on one team!

On the American League side, you would have Harmon Killebrew, Mickey Mantle, Elston Howard, Brooks Robinson, Boog Powell, Tony Oliva, Al Kaline, Norm Cash, Sam McDowell, Gary Peters, Camilo Pascual, Whitey Ford plus a host of others.

Miss them days,lol

Yankees had a great farm system. the last one to come out of it was Jeter, the rest were traded for aging stars, who burn the fans. ( edit: sorry, Robinson Cano is homegrown, and a hell of a player)

A-roid.....a lifetime ban please, I'd rather have a 12 year old playing third than him, will most likely hit better in the playoffs.

At this point, I am jealous of the Mets.

All the Yanks problems aside, they will still make the playoffs, but the fans know this is only the decline into mediocrity, like the '80s.

The Blue Jays stand a better chance:haha:

At least we are a big market team (led the league in attendance back in the winning years), and we have a big enough payroll to buy a few decent free agents.

Interesting aside:

High payroll doesn't guarantee victory, but it does allow us to sign free agents, and to sustain a "win now!" model. Considering that "market price" for 1 WAR is like 5 million, and a replacement level team wins 48 games a season.

Assume that it takes 95 wins to make it into the post season, a pure free agent team would costs approximately 240 million dollars a year! A value that only the Yankees and Dodgers can afford.

Now how do teams with low payrolls succeed than? Through their minimum-wagers. Minimum wage in baseball is 0.5 million. Now no player in their right mind would accept minimum wage as a free agent unless his skill level is approximately only replacement level. However, remember, for the first few years of major league service, a young player does not have the right to negotiate pay. Thus for the first few seasons, every young player gets minimum wage. And it is because of this reason that low payroll teams can succeed.

It takes years in a farm system to make a young play major league ready. And thus, it is impossible for a team to go from "worst to first" on the power of their farm system alone. Thus a team must rely on smart front office moves and free agents to make the post season.

The Red Sox were only able to do this because they have the second highest payroll in the league. They were able to flex their financial muscles, get rid of dead weight, and make it to the top. The Twins cannot achieve this, since their payroll cannot allow them to get the free agents they need.

So yeah, what I'm trying to say is, the Blue Jays will be top dog next year instead of the Twins. :O:
