I'm on my first patrol in TMO 2.5 (normally use RFB). Left Manila on the 8th of December 1941 aboard USS 40 (S-Class).

Was patrolling off the San Berindio Straight, and ran head long into a Jap DD leading a Large mine layer. I was just finishing up a firing solution, planning on putting one in the DD and then deal with the ML, from 90 degrease off their starboard. Then the DD detected me, I'm pretty sure from my periscope, then turned to engage.

I role-play a bit and have read that the Mk-10 torpedo ran straight and did not alter coarse. So I went to Ahead Flank and had to turn 30 degrease to bring my tubes to bear. I fired off a spread of 3 torpedos while the DD came direct down my throat. It altered course hard a starboard but the lead torpedo was still going to hit.

This is where things got very interesting. I had 'Free View' off but 'Event Camera' on, so I saw the torpedo went harmlessly under the DD. Last thing I saw in the periscope though, before lowering it and going deep, was the ML crossing behind the DD. I turn a hard left behind the DD so it can't track me for a while. Seconds later we hear three loud explosions from inside the sub. The event camera did not come back on. Minutes later the event camera does come back on, showing the 4,400t mine layer sinking with three holes in her side.

I then stayed straight and went silent and deep before the DD came around. A second DD arrived and they depth charged my last known position for a bit while I slipped away.

I've done a lot of patrols but that action takes the cake. Taking a DD head on, and then getting an unsuspecting sinking. Good Stuff

Nice - That'll teach them to use the escort as a shield :)

Nice.I once had a Type C escort evade four down the throat torpedos(two to the bow, one covering each side track, usually works well, just barely missed her, this escort was first team, was neat watching it make slight course adjustments to avoid fish fired at 600 yards) , while I went deep to avoid depth charges, two minutes later one fish slammed into a nippon maru tanker, she exploded in a massive fireball and sank.Torpedo hit just under her aft stack, it was great.

Know that area well. A very large invasion group comes in the next day the same path as the small group you attacked.....
