Travelled down on the Friday to watch the Saturday events (show was Saturday and Sunday).
One bonus of going down Friday and staying in a Travelodge overnight was to cater for an early start Saturday morning (best viewing points).
A further bonus was the opportunity to meet up with Herr Berbunch on the Friday night after an evening meal.
It's always good to meet face to face with a community/forum member (memories of meeting Neal and 20+ others in Texas 2008) and I think it's a pity it doesn't happen more often.
So, as I said earlier, not long after The Quality Street Gang had enjoyed a nice steak meal, HB duly arrived and despite the fact he was driving we managed to have a few convivial drinks (HB on non alcoholic) and a chin wag...mostly about SubSim of course.
I must say I found him to be a great guy and fine conversationalist (only when I stopped for breath) :) much like just about everyone I've met from here in real life terms.
I know I said it earlier but honestly, I'm the good looking one :O:

I took over a thousand photos on the day but just as we arrived I decided to go for shutter speed priority, not thinking about compensating for camera shake despite having the lens stabilizer turned on.
The weather was quite hot (in Brit terms) 28 - 30 degrees so lighting was okay which meant the static shots were fine but the planes were flying too high and quite a way from the viewing points so my 55-250mm zoom wasn't quite up to the task :-?
Anyway, here goes.....enjoy.

Just a stab an #1: Is it a Jaguar? If so, I think the original maker was called Sepecat.
#2 Is without question the Avro Vulcan, one of the all-time greats.

People can argue which is the best heavy bomber from the early Cold War era, but I don't think there's any question which is the coolest looking. :sunny:

The first is a Tornado GR4 of 617 Sqn.
The Vulcan is not only a cool looking bomber but also one of the most agile, not many cold war bombers can barrel roll on take off (although prolly not with much more than display crew and fuel). For me the sound of the Vulcan is phenomenal, the best in the business.
Keep 'em coming Jim, I took no pics on the ground and very few in the air.

Ooh, lookie - choptywopters!
I'm suddenly reminded of a very old joke: Bob Hope was hosting some awards show back in the '50s. His first line was "The NBC censors have informed me that I have to tell you I arrived by heckticopter."

Jim's kindly given me permission to add my pics to this thread, there are only six - I was using camera phone which has a lens defect so pics have been edited to remove that, and/or cropped and resized.
1/2. On arrival at the southern end of the airfield we had to cross 02's threshold but wait whilst a 5 Sqn Sentinal took off. This aircraft was to return later in the day escorted by the Red Arrows - I'd seen them the day before whilst on a bike ride but I couldn't tell exactly what the aircraft was and despite flying right over my village the wife didn't know either (other than it was with the Red Arrows!). Minutes after the Sentinal/Reds flew by they were followed by the Lancaster. Happy cycling. :D I also bumped into a mate who is aircrew on Sentinals, had a peek inside and my little girl sat in the pilot's seat - very excited. Then we had a look down in the business end - very boring, nothing was switched on, three consoles (running Windows!!!) for the imaging/battlespace management and that's about it.
3/4/5. Red Arrows, and the heart they make in the sky. Apologies for the poor quality.
6. What I went for. Luckily we were parked not far from 02's threshold, so just about everything touched down right next to us - particularly the Vulcan.

Ah, goodbye old friend - the VC10. :salute:
Many happy hours in the back of those jetting around the world, sitting backwards ('tis the safest way!), and a couple of refuelling trips.
And I was working when this happened - A slight error in fuelling, all in the tail and empty everywhere else - written off/not economically viable.

Much appreciated mate, I'm sure we'll meet one day.
The weather was great on the day, the only downside for me was the distance and height the flightline was from the crowd....my 250mm lens simply couldn't cope unlike a couple of friends who had 400mm+ lens.
ImageShack is also compounding matters by missing out randomly almost 50% of the photos you think you've posted despite giving the links.

Unfortunately Jim good weather also extends flight distance, can't have it all I guess ;) Have you tried photobucket mate, never had a problem with them personally.
Best regards.

Right now I'll try just about anything because the static shots have just about ended and I thank God for digital photography when I consider the literally hundreds of shots I've deleted because of the shortcomings of the zoom lens.

Haha, I hear you mate. Actually I sometimes wonder if digital hasn't made us all a tad less careful, if you get my drift. No more mono/tripod for me, I have lens stability and a 16 GB card ;) Believe me macro is almost the same.
Best regards.

Rgr that...been looking at the Canon 100mm to 400mm lens but I'm not sure I want to pay the best part of a grand that I'd only be using a few times per year :hmm2:

Today I was at the bookstore flipping through Combat Aircraft Monthly...and I saw a big colorful full page ad for none other than the Waddington Air Show.
Wish I could've gone. :woot:
Jim, What format are you shooting? If you are doing it in RAW or at the very least the largest JPG format you can usually get a you good clear (as long as they are in focus) shot that you can then crop to make the subject large enough to make it look like you've got a longer lens. The shot in my sig was done using a 250mm zoom so there was lots of blue around the what looked like a quite small plane.
With a bit of judicious cropping you can do wonders, but only if your shot has the info to work with that comes from the larger formats. RAW is best but then you have to post process them to get a JPG or GIF or whatever.
If you do go for a longer lens, make sure you get a monopod to steady the camera. Makes it much less tiring at events like airshows. Remember the bigger the lens the heavier the camera gets.

Tried RAW once and found it to be a right clart on not to mention a drain on memory cards so using the largest JPEG format.
The shots I consider viewable (20% at most) have been heavily cropped and 'doctored' in various ways.
I've two tripods (having tried a friends monopod) and tbh I don't like either.
Weight wise, yes I tried a friends 100mm to 400mm lens and did find it quite heavy but he reckons I'd get used to it and my feeling is, at three to four air shows per year and at a cost of nearly a grand I'm not sure if it's worth the outlay.
I'll probably carry on with the two lens I currently have 18mm to 55mm and 55mm to 250mm and keep my focus on static displays and museums.
The air shows are starting to diminish now in terms of quality, frequency and aircraft types anyway.

Good point and one not having previously thought of does carry some merit especially as they only have one unlike others such as the F-15.

Yes I have. But for me the loudest aircraft is the B-1B on take off at a remote airbase (no noise restrictions! :woot: ), even louder than a VC10 which is banned from most of the world's major airports/bases due to it being unreasonably loud for the local populace.
For one engine though, the F-16 sure is up there!

I haven't heard either one.
Right now, I think for prop planes the P-51 takes the cake. I've heard them fly. Even on videos they sound awesome.
For jets, the F-18 or the A-10. I really want to see the Vulcan fly though.
I should look for a video of it on Youtube.

Sadly yes...One of the senior members in my Civil Air Patrol Squadron went to all the planning meetings for the Air Show. They originally planned a lot of stuff...but more cuts made it smaller and ticket prices higher.
The last Air Show they did a while back is one I'll never forget. That was awesome. I have autographs of the Blue Angels and the A-10 Demo Pilot...This year, I added the autograph of the MiG-17F pilot.
Here soon, there is going to be a small "Salute to the Veterans" thing at the Southern Illinois University Airport. It's a bit of a drive...but I want to see the B-29...B-24...etc.
They're bringing out all these classic planes...and if I go to the Aviation Open House I get a free ride in a DC-3!! :yeah:
Can't wait!

The Arrows are certainly not quiet on the roll too, I remember them taking off at Biggin, years ago, I was quite close to the flight-line and man did they shriek.
The Tiffie really caught me by surprise, I'd never seen one in action before and the way she was thrown around the sky, well it made me and Nagy/Keab completely re-evaluate the rather low opinion we had of her (due to the bungled way her program was handled), she may have taken her time to get here, but it was certainly worth it.
RO, the Frightening will probably never fly in the UK again, but they do do fast taxi runs which give you an idea of what those pocket rocket engines can do:

Sitting I the man cave looking for a book I'd earlier archived and suddenly heard the unmistakeable sound of the throaty roar of multiple Rolls-Royce Merlin engines approaching.
Looked out the window and there they were taking up position over the house and lining up with the Tyne River to begin their approach to Newcastle Airport....The Lancaster, Spitfire and Hurricane of the Battle of Britain Memorial flight.
Probably stopping at Newcastle overnight in preparation for the Sunderland Airshow tomorrow.
I wasn't quick enough to grab my camera from the room next door but they were at least twice as close as they are in this recent shot I took whilst at RAF Waddington.
