Are we really independent?:hmmm:

I for one have stopped celebrating anything to do with the US. It's like celebrating the great ship Titantic after it hit the iceburg.

I use these "holidays" as a solemn rememberance of what the US used to stand for and the men and women who gave their lives for those freedoms.

Actually Independence Day was the 2nd. The 4th is "Send The Official Copy To The Printers Day".

But the sentiment is always appreciated.

I will always celebrate Independence Day in honor of those who shed their precious blood for this country. It's one thing to shed paper for this country, but that'll never equate to shedding blood for this country.

Except of course if not for five particular men who never shed blood for the country there would be no Declaration, and possibly no Revolution. Add to them the rest of the Continental Congress. They were as important as anyone.

Once it was a bright, noble and positive date for the whole world. But today it has the bad taste of sold morality and greedy, misanthropic ruthlessness.

I miss America.

America is dying. We're out of our prime.

This is why we must celebrate 'MERICA DAY!

'Merica! Freedom, Guns, Troops, and Bill of Rights. Politics? Nah. Just 'Merica!

Better get used to this.

The US has build up its own image of surveillance, distrust, torture, contempt for mankind, murder, terror etc. and they'll keep it for the next few generations.

The world can't bring the warmongers to justice, and it won't bomb the US back to normal, but it can force the US to view into a mirror to see that ugly face.

Speaking of surveillance....

We have to give those NSA guys something to do by criticizing the government. :O:

Could say the same about the UK but we generally try to keep it in one thread (Heartless Tories strike again).

On a serious note, I am very grateful for all involved in the birth of our country and those who have protected it through the years. You did good.

If I could've lived during any other time, it would be 1940's-50's America.

Ah...but then there's the time machine arguments... :hmmm:

I missed you on the 2nd Steve, glad you're still on top of things
Letter written by John Adams to his wife Abigail on July 3, 1776.
"The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more."
http://www.masshist.org/digitaladams/aea/cfm/doc.cfm?id=L17760703jasecond

Of the Fourth of July, Adams wrote...nothing. Jefferson did make an entry in his diary that he bought several pairs of gloves for his wife, plus a new thermometer, and noted that the high tempurature that day was a lovely 76 degrees.

Here is a great, and more importantly short, article on the subject.
http://bearingdrift.com/2011/07/03/the-real-fourth-of-july/

So why the Fourth? Simple. They spent the Third revising the document, cutting out several portions concerning slavery and breaking Jefferson's heart. On the Fourth they voted to call it good and send that version to the printers. On July Fifth the official version was released to the public, with the famous header "In Congress, July 4th 1776."

In later years Adams and Jefferson, along with everybody else, would "remember" that it was the Fourth when everything happened, which makes it fitting that they both died on July 4, 1826, fifty years to the day after the "official" adoption of the Declaration.

First of all, Happy Independence Day to you all! :salute:

A couple of weeks ago, I walked into what was a ceremony for the American Troops leaving Heidelberg. (http://worldnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/06/30/12482964-bye-bye-gi-deep-impact-for-many-germans-as-us-troops-downsize?lite) I just expected just some sort of German-American fest and thought it would be a nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

I still have somewhat mixed feelings about it, to be honest. My gf said with a laugh it meant that "either the Cold War is over, or we're no longer considered a threat", but to me it really felt like a farewell. It feld good to have them here, see them in the streets occasionally and to just know that they're here.

Just my two cents on this day :)
