Fellow Kaleun's

I have a question for any (probably) all of you. See Pictures below.

Now that is HMS Nelson, i came across her on my way home from a fairly profitable patrol and with only 3 eels left. As you can see i loosed them all at her and "scored" hits only for them to fail to detonate.

It has happened to me in the past and i would not be surprised if everyone has suffered similar occurances. I am just interested to hear about other peoples experiences and whether they felt unlucky or annoyed.

at what angle would the impact be? if it is the angle of the picture deflections are a common thing.

At that angle the only chance for a detonation is by using the magnetic pistol. Impact pistols usually only work between 60-120 degree angle.

Neither unlucky nor annoying. Expected result under the conditions, especially if you are early war, when the torpedoes were execrable.

Or possibly lucky: If just one had detonated, done minimal or no damage, and alerted the RN to your presence, THAT would have been unlucky!

They were all magnetic detonators. Was actually a bit of a snap shot as i was being harrassed by a destroyer in the area.

Early in the war, the torpedoes were unreliable, especially the magnetic pistols. Impact pistols were just as bad at shallow AOBs. The magnetic pistols do not get reliable until mid-war. Impact pistols are only acceptably reliable with an AOB of 90 +/- 10 degrees. Your AOB looks about 40 degrees port, if I am reading the pic right. Dud City. Even if they hit, 3 eels may not be enough anyway, depending on your mods.

I should have added that they would have had to be keel shots. I usually set my keel shots .5M deeper than the keel depth of the ship.

I am no experienced SH3 Kaleun, but in your situation, I wouldn't even bother. 3 torpedoes aren't enough for the target in question, and that would only result in an unavoidable very long (or short) cat and mouse game.
Personally, I think you were very lucky.

When I get down to 3 or less torpedoes I just go home.
Naturally, if a lone merchant crosses my path (or sails near), I graciously accept the offering. :D

Playing GWX (100%), in November 1939 my VIIB picked up a convoy inbound the Bristol Channel being escorted by HMS Nelson et al. With a pair of DDs headed my way, I freaked and fired a full spread at 2 degrees. One missed, three hit Nelson and took her out. Medals all around and drank free at the cabaret! Gluck!

BTW, when playing NYGM, a VIIB in 1939 only gets 4 forward and 1 aft - no reloads. RTB with 3 forward doesn't seem like a viable option in that case.:DYMMV.
