I am curious as to what is the most commonly-used U-boot class by you, the Player?
What Class do you upgrade to the most? Or start a new game with? Or run with entirely throughout your most important save/campaign?
Also curious because i am involving myself with U-boot re-tex projects and would like to see if i am wasting my time with re-skinning U-boots that no-one uses.
This poll will hopefully give me an indication as to what classes are played the most and i can concentrate more on those for my re-tex missions.
Currently a thread exists on a VIIC-Class res-tex project here. (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=205420)

VII because I feel over powered with all those torpedoes in an IX boat.

I run a separate career out of each available flotilla simultaneously. At the start of the war this means I have a career in all three main types.
Hi,
Type IX - mostly IX B and IX D/2. Some month ago i started a similar poll in the german "MarineSims-Forum". Here you can see the results (http://www.marinesims.de/wbb2/thread.php?threadid=14117).
Greetings

I start the war with a type VIIB.
Around June of 1941, I commission a type IXB or C and use it until mid-1943.
Then I drive a VIIC/41 from then on.
I never seem to survive long enough to get a XXI. :/\\!! I like to think I get assigned to shore duties - flotilla commander, BdU staff, marineschule, etc.
My VIIC/41 has no deck gun or gun-qualified crew members (I need all the Repair quals I can pack in:up:). As soon as I leave port, I fire off 2 internal eels and strike down the two external reloads. By 1943, it was suicide to attempt to do that at sea and many boats went to sea without external reloads. This lets me simulate that condition. I pretend the external reload canisters are filled with canned food, clean sheets, and other necessities. I like to keep the 2nd toilet clear at all times; does great things for crew morale.

Start off in 2nd Flottila out of wilhelmshaven with a VII. As soon as i earn enough renown, I upgrade to a IX

Stated with a VII and then moved to a IXB. I actually like them both.

Although I love the type VII, I often play the Type II more. Because I start campaigns more often and not finish them, or end up sinking before I transfer to the VII. I like the challenge too.

Just started a Type II myself, wish me luck ;)

I've just noticed...no Type XXIII :hmmm:
Its the two torp load out that hurts the XXIII. If only it carried a Type II load out.

Typ VII, the lifetime love:Kaleun_Yawn:
The very best convoy campaign attacks are on the Freetown convoys. For those one needs the IX :arrgh!:

Type XXI does not have a after torpedo tube,I dont like that.
If you have a destroyer surrounding you ,it is very difficult to fire a torpedo to the destroyer

^ Perhaps but you can dive quicker and achieve a faster submerged speed to avoid him.

I'm definitely a Type VII fan.
That said my vote went to the II. I played so much AOD that I feel like I'm cheating if I start a career with anything other than the duck. I usually switch to the VII after 4ish patrols.
Lately though, I've been dying before I can make the upgrade!

I love the dive times of the VIIC , but the capacity and range of the the IX series is hard to beat .

I love 'em both but I've been using the IX more for the extra firepower. With the Flakzwilling I can laugh at any plane!!

IXD2
I start with Type VIIB then IXB, IXC and my favorite IXD2.
I use these mods: U-guns V4, ASN Torpedoes, and a fast sub mod. The IXD2 does 40 knots on the surface, 30 submerged. KILLER!!! :yeah:

I haven't played in a while.
What I used to do was start in a VIIB or a II and I'd upgrade to the VIIC and sometimes the IX if I live that long.
Usually I die in late 42 and early 43. :03:

I love my trusty IID!
I'm saving up renown to get a VII (and I'm nearly there too), but for now I'm happy with what i've got. Be nice if I could strap a couple of external firing tubes on though.:arrgh!:

No Type XXI or XXIII I notice.
The XXI, as advanced as it was, just doesn't appeal to me. A footnote in WWII history yet changed the face of sub design. That should appeal, but strangely, it doesn't. Weird.
I think of tech that *almost* changed the face of WWII. The XXI, the V2, the ME262, the German jet-powered flying wing (can't recall the name), the Stg. 44, German nuclear weapons research...can you imagine if those were all front line equipment in '39?
A handful of years then may have seen a *much* different geo-political environment now. Most folks in the general populace really don't know how *close* the WWII arms race was...

It was the same for me 20 years ago.
I ended up voting for the IX, since lately I've been getting into being a pirate in the Caribbean, but I like the VII just as much.
Just can't get away from a type VII B or C. :arrgh!:

I've got SHIII, but I haven't played it yet.
I think I'll use the IX the most. It has good range, firepower and spare torpedoes.

Type XXI does not have a after torpedo tube,I dont like that.
If you have a destroyer surrounding you ,it is very difficult to fire a torpedo to the destroyer
The XXI was supposed to be equipped with a rear tube for Ursel supercavitating rocket (think Shkval with lower performances) for use as anti-destroyer weapon. As with many of the more fanciful projects in late war nazi germany it did not come to fruition and the space was used to fit a lathe and other machine tools for underway repairs. The B variant of the XXI was supposed to carry six rear firing torpedo tubes in addition to the forward ones, but this came at the expense of all internal reloads. The C would have carried 18 torpedo tubes (six forward, twelve angled aft) but in addition to internal realods battery capacity would have been reduced as well.
I think of tech that *almost* changed the face of WWII. The XXI, the V2, the ME262, the German jet-powered flying wing (can't recall the name), the Stg. 44, German nuclear weapons research...can you imagine if those were all front line equipment in '39?The V2 was a technical marvel but essentially a waste of resources. The british were about on par with the germans on jet research, so whatever the germans did, they could more or less match. Main problem with subs in 1939 was not performance but lack of numbers: there were about sixty boats while prewar estimates calculated that about a thousands were needed to achieve decisive results. Since a XXI required much more scarce resources (copper, lead, rubber etc) than a VII or an IX that means fewer subs or fewer resources for something else. The XXI begins to be really attractive only once radar becomes a standard fit for ASW assets, which in 1939 was not yet the case IIRC.
