On Sunday, June 23, at 7 a.m. EDT (1100 GMT), the moon will arrive at perigee — the point in its orbit bringing it closest to Earth, a distance of 221,824 miles. Now the moon typically reaches perigee once each month (and on some occasions twice), with their respective distances to Earth varying by 3 percent.
But Sunday's lunar perigee will be the moon's closest to Earth of 2013.

When the perigee moon lies close to the horizon it can appear absolutely enormous... a low-hanging moon looks incredibly large when hovering near to trees, buildings and other foreground objects.

Has anyone seen this super moon? Too cloudy here to get any photographs of it.

I do remember my exitement when I saw it the first time as a kid. I couldn't believe it and feared there was something dangerous going on. Imagine the moon closing in for some unknown reason, maybe crashing into earth soon. I was totally frightened but the grown ups told me it's normal and there is nothing to fear.

A few years ago I was on a walk at night. There was a full moon in the sky and I realized it had a really huge halo around. At least 50 times of its own diameter. Other people saw me standing and started to look up. We were talking about this and no one remembered to have seen this before.

Too bad I live in Norway. In June and July the sun never goes below the horizon, making the moon impossible to spot.

Here's a little secret. No matter how big it looks, it you hold your hand at arm's length you can still cover the moon with your baby finger.

I remember seeing a supermoon about 9 years ago whilst driving home at dusk. I was travelling eastbound up a hill, and as I neared the crest of the hill the moon was suddenly visible on the horizon directly in front of me. A phenonemal sight as it was a bright full moon and had just risen. It appeared to fill the whole windscreen and felt as if I could drive into it. Never seen anything like it before, and I had never heard of a supermoon or the optical illusion created when low on the horizon.

I got a glimpse of it Friday night, rising through the tree in back of my house. I noticed that it looked much brighter and larger than usual and the next morning, I read about the "Supermoon" on my homepage, News, section. Supposed to get some thunderstorms sometime today/tonight, but right now the sky looks completely clear. I'll give it another gander tonight.:yep:

Was hoping to glare at it a bit tonight, but got called in, and now I'm stuck at work on a conference call. This building needs more windows.
