(Last years news, haven't heard of any updates)
A debate went on back in the early 1900's wether to build in Nicaragua or finish the French Canal in Panama. It revolvied in part around the frequency and severity of earthquakes in the region as well as political stability and the fact the Brits would whine about us moving in on their turf.
I used to live in Gatun I think I felt one quake the whole time I was there. Meanwhile Nicaragua got rattled with some big ones quite a bit. Wonder how the Chinese if they follow through with their plans are going to work around that little detail. But I guess with today technology it might not be as big a problem.
Btw looking at google maps. Egads a lot has changed, the company has been widening the canal. Damn thing is going right through the town I used to live in. The yacht club is gone, the swimming and fishing holes. Even the house I lived in has been leveled. My high school is now a shipyard so much for having a class reunion there :)
I miss that place.
