"resembled a torpedo"
Pfffffffft. Have they've ever even seen a torpedo!? Besides what terrorist would be brash enough to haul an actual torpedo on the open highway in plain sight of everyone.

The only worry now if the beards do decide to use a replica civil war sub for real and no-one reports it in case they look dumb.:hmmm:

Up the road from me this welder builds BBQ pit, smokers and regular grills. He also rents a few out and they are on display at the end of his property.A Yankee would pass by there and think he had found Ali Baba's Terrorist Torpedo Impiorum.

It was on a highway and seen by thousands of people...but ONE person called it in, one person does not represent all Yankees. Do I have to remind people who won the war between North and South.
I am sure you can look it up on your own, if some of you southern yokels know how to spell GOOGLE.

Smile when you say that, pardner. Or at least use a smiley.
Unless you're serious, in which case we'll have to have a discussion about forum decorum, and everybody hates it when I do that. :sunny:

As a member of "Friends of the Hunley", I find it funny. I wonder how much it cost us to track down this terrorist plot. However, with all the concern, I guess he should put a sign on it, but I agree it looks like a BBQ cooker.

Reminds me of a story the comedian Louie CK told on the Opie and Anthony show, about him sighting and calling in what he thought was a sub in the Hudson River, when taking Chris Rock on a boat trip...
It ended up being a mooring ball, the toolbag circled it for 2 hours.
READ YOUR DAMN CHARTS!
(I can provide clips of such idiocy on you tube, look up Louie ck boating story, opie and anthony and see for yourself)

It's ok, Us southern boys don't get upset because when the civil war broke out, we thought the Yanks were after our whiskey and our women. As soon as we learned what you really wanted, we just quit and went home.:03::D
And then the African country of Liberia was born. Mostly autonomous until someone discovered gold there.

Liberia came first.
Liberia founded in 1820. 41 years before the US civil war.

Nice to see non-biased moderators at work. A Yankee feels insulted and mentions something about Southerners and he gets jumped on. Yet I have seen so many groups of people get insulted on this site. Gay's, Muslims, Women, Blacks....In fact a thread opened after this one referring to Austrians as being Strudel Eating Surrender Monkeys and all of them being compared to Hitler, I see no warnings in that thread. Or maybe some people just don't count.
Biased, non-biased...I believe there is a difference.

As I said, his first comment, about tarring all with the same brush, was valid. I agree. I only questioned his retaliatory reply after that. If he was joking, fine. I have no way of telling over the internet. As I also said, my main intent was trying to divert another big fight. If I was wrong about his intent, fine. I'll gladly apologize.
As for insulting other groups, people have also been warned about that, and even brigged. The Austrian thread? I haven't said anything because I thought it was some kind of joke. Anytime you feel someone has been unfairly insulted, please feel free to report it.
And as for bias? I'm not a Yankee by birth or by location, but I firmly believe the South was wrong. Not trying to start another discussion here, just letting you know my actual bias, if any.

I am not from up north.:hmmm:
Really I dont care about the whole North/South thing it is a great example of how a major issue was never resolved effectively and weak compromise after weak compromise lead to a war.
I see a lot of guys down here in Florida wearing those "Dixie Outfitters" clothes so I asked once this man that was wearing one of their shirts.Where did his family come from.Answer Massachusetts.
Honestly people from different regions of the US have good qualities people that I met from New York(the state) Mass,Pennsylvania they are pretty good honest workers.
The stuff I say about north/south is just banter we used to do it a lot in the military at least the units I was in we did just BS really.Pick on each others words soda, pop, cola.

Well holy cow, what did I do?
I post a thread I thought was very interesting about a remake of a American Civil War Sub which I thought might be of interest. This IS a submarine topic.
All goes well until someone insults a whole region of the country by inserting data which had nothing to do with the post's intent. I did not for a moment get the impression he was saying it in light humor.
And yes, IMO he WAS being a troll in the last part of his post. My post had nothing to do with who won or lost a war fought over 150 years ago, and there was no insult on my part of anyone from the north or south.
Excuse me--NOT. I stand firm on my position.

Seriously, do not play innocent here as that article itself was highly inflammatory. It's theme was "look at all them northern idiots for freaking out over a civil war sub, are northerners and the government dumb or what.".
Hate to break it to many of you, but lots of people have no idea what the Hunley is or care. It sounds like one motorist was concerned and called it in, and that law enforcement checked up on it. Not everyone is into submarines, just as I am sure there are a lot of subjects each of us are totally ignorant about, and could be made to look like total morons about too.
As for law enforcement specifically, do you think they got a detailed enough description to identify the object as being a sub from this person, or a photograph? I highly doubt they did. Also I am sure there are plenty of law enforcement who know little about submarines. Plus they are obligated to investigate anything that is at all suspicious (particularly as terrorists do use all kinds of creative methods of attack).
Anyhow I am watching this thread, so I suggest everyone back off from the various hostilities going on in here.

Was it something we said:06:
C'mon breadcatcher. We can't play if you take your ball home.:arrgh!:
Perhaps the whole incident could have been avoided if the Hunley replica had livery plastered all over it. Then all the motorists would have said; "Look, it's a civil war stock car and it's sponsored by Tetley Tea, M & Ms and Lowes."
Besides, you know what they say about IQ?
It can only be measured by where you happen to be standing at the time.:know:
A simple tarp would have done the trick.

It wasn't fair to Bear. All animals are smarter than me.
Bear should awaken you at 04:30 with a rousing round of yapping.
Besides, I'm no Yankee. I only let the wife do that.:03:

I'm sorry, I shouldn't have compared you to Bear, I was trying to make you feel better about yourself. Bear got a major make over today, haircut, nails, teeth cleaned. Maybe you should try it.
I've been to the Hunley museum several times and got inside the basic same model. I can't imagine taking it to sea...It does look like a BBQ cooker. Still, I can understand someone thinking it strange, hopefully he'll put a sign on it to avoid further Yankee misunderstandings.
