My current hydro operator is a real doofuss. Is there ;any way i can replace him with a more skilled operator. I play mostly single mission seldom any campaing.
I think the sound/sonar modeling in SH4 is sub-standard, and there is little we can do about it.

He would probably do better if he didn't have to put up with all this punishment. :O:

The sonar man will be limited by the actual range of the gear and be more effected by conditions. In other words the WCA set has a range of ~10,000 yds(5NM) your crew will only be able to hear that far under ideal conditions.
Now you can sit at the station and pick contacts at much greater distance I've hit contacts as far as 40,000 yds away on the WCA.
Now the sound mans ranging can be outstanding I have found contacts and then had the sound man tell me the range and he has been spot on I know this because I also measured the the range by radar.
Another thing to keep in mind is while submerged when you have the periscope up both the radar man and the sound man may stop giving reports so only pop the scope up every so often. The radar man only gets effected when you are at radar depth. If you have your scope up on the surface it has no effect on the radar man.
Also keep in mind that the bearing for a sound contact is going to be the stern end of the ship that can trow you for a loop if you forget.

that means that if i get a sound bearing of 0 degrees the Bow of the ship
would be heading north since the loudest sound is the sound of kthe propeller churning in the water at the stern.

Not necessarily the contact could be heading in any direction you will always hear the noisy screws in the water which are in the stern end of the vessel. What I meant is that the bearing will be more towards the stern end of the vessel while if you where to look with the scope the COT will be a few degrees to one side or the other depending on the contacts direction of travel.
At some point no matter the contacts direction of travel it will be at 0 degrees if it passes directly in front of your bow the possible tracks are numerous.
That is why you have to track a contact for a few minutes in order to ascertain the direction of travel. And why sound only attacks are so tricky.
