unless you have access to the original image from a reputable source, there is really no way to tell if it was faked unless they make a mistake.

Remember the "face" on Mars a while back? It was just a light and shadow effect, but good enough for these loiters to come up with all kinds of interplanetary conspiracy theories. They probably watched too many X Files episodes. I don't even read it when I stumble upon this kind of nonsense.
