Hi
I havn't been near any Silent Hunter's for well over a year possibly 2 but now I have decided to try it again. To be honest the reason I gave up before was that I attacked a convoy and the ships Ai got itself into a terrible state. All ramming each other. Looked awful.
anyway
I have installed SH5 and patches and am looking for the best Mega pack.
Has the AI been improved at all with any Megapacks?
Cheers

Hi and welcome back!
Yes, one must have mod for AI is TDW IRAI 0.39 and its own patch
Everything has been redone, and AI is a lot less stupid now...but there is always room for improvment...nothing is perfect in this virtual world :D

I just came back to it after a year, too, and I have to say, I just am not impressed with this game.
I've got the Steam version so I guess I can't do this Generic Patcher everyone is talking about.
I much prefer SH3. The graphics are better in SH5, but the sim is just easier to operate in 3.

Whatever floats your boat but you are definitely missing out by playing such old software :yep: Get the DVD version of SH5 from Amazon. It's like $5 now. Then you can use my Generic Patcher to fix the stock bugs the devs left behind (and add some new features they didn't think about).
Can't believe some are still hard stuck on SH3 nowadays...
I used to play it A LOT back many years ago, and really loved it hard.
So decided to give it a new shot last month with GWX3...god, it tooks 10 mn, and i uninstalled it as fast as i decided to try it again :haha:
Was shocked the way it age so old...

So, how's your Type IX career coming? Sunk anything besides the seven merchant types available?
I would love to play nothing but SH5, but those limitations are still there after three years. Old graphics? I still play Aces Of The Deep. :O:

I love SH3! I reackon it's the bench mark for subsims. :yep: You need to look past the eye-candy and appreciate the interface!

I respect your choice, but still don't really catch it.
I just can't pass the eye candy, after trying it! If i didn't tried SH5 eye candy, ok, that would be different...
But playing SH5 fully modded with so many improvments it brings to it, i get the same fun (at least - probably even more) as i had many years back with SH3 :yep:
For instance, knowing what kind of tennis game we can buy nowadays, i couldn't play again this one (even with a good interface):

:haha:
I loved Sh3, and reinstalled it the other day with GWX 3.0, but arghhh my eyes my eyes!
yes it looks dated, but on top of that 1024x768 look terrible on a 22 inch LCD i hacked it to go to 1280x900 or so, but it it not much of an improvement.
To make matters worse, I cant get it to run with AA enabled, if i force AA though the Nvidia CP the game bombs out (although doing this used to work on my older machine). and for some reason reflections are not working either...
So I just couldnt play it, it was just too darn horrible to look at. They say graphics dont matter, but im afraid they do.
Im going to give Sh5 another chance. :)

yeah, that's a funny one! but for gods sake, you cant compare SH3 to that.
it shouldn't get to a slagging contest between the two Sims - one has spawned the other, with 3+4 there would no 5.
I've been with SH3 almost from the beginning and the forum gets new members all the time. the two Sims can not be compared. comparison's are odious at the best of times.
take away the graphics from 5 and what are you left with?
3 is old and the graphics are wooden but it runs like a dream and we are free to roam...
what's the point of comparing this?
5 one day will be as good as 3 - but at present it cant be simply because it has not had the time and dedication lavished upon it that 3 has received and still does - for instance, what about U-BOAT HAHD?
its ridiculous to compare the two Sims.
im glad we have them both and one day SH5 will shine like SH3 - that's what matters!

something that has WAY more potential than SH3 or SH4. That's just a fact.
And SH5 is already way better than previous titles (if it's modded and patched). That's also a fact.
U-Boat HAHD is just updating textures and maybe 3D models. The engine for displaying the graphics is still outdated and you can't get around that. Sorry but their is no comparing new technology (SH5) to old technology (SH3). You can fix up a Model T but it will never be a Ferrari.

So were back to the car comparisons again. I thought we had got over that years ago. But first...
WAY more potential? I agree, but that potential still is unfulfilled. Not even close yet. As I jokingly asked earlier, where is the Type IX? Type II? Those of us who aren't gamers and only play for the history are still waiting for even a modicum of actual simulation. I do have to admit that your true celestial navigation is a wonderful thing, as are many of the other goodies dedicated modders have been able to wring out of it, but I'm still waiting for it to come close to SH3 in sheer variety of experience and historical feel.
Way better? In what respect? Graphics? Everyone already acknowledges that. What else? Yes, as you say, the graphics engine is outdated. As is constantly pointed out, graphics aren't everything, unless whiz-bang is all you're interested in. What else does it have to offer?
Back to the car comparison - yours is bad. The original Silent Service might be compared to a Model T, but comparing SH3 to SH5 is more like comparing the Ferrari 250 to the latest 458. Yes, the 2013 model is technically the better car, but the 1964 250GT is still a blast to drive and is a true classic.
So give me a Type II and let me start from dockside and sink an Arrow class tanker and maybe you'll start to have a point.
Trevally.

Sounds like a bumpy, rattly, noisy and poor handling ride:hmmm:
Where as my Type VII from my safe reinforced bunker attacking a cimm tanker:yep:
Now that is a smooth powerhouse performance ride:rock:

Heh, Lack of man power....
The lack of a type IX is bummer, what i cant figure out is why no one has ported the IXD2 model from the SH4 U-boat Missions yet.
(As long as you can live with having a type VII interior) I think the full interior in SH5 is why we got no Type IX in the first place.
oh and the Type II in Sh3 is actually a bit of waste since it was out dated by 1939 and mostly used as a training sub anyway, from what i understand few of them ventured outside of the baltic sea.

I'm not sure, but I think if it could be done it would have been by now. I couldn't live with the wrong interior, which is why I don't play any of the surface warfare mods. It just doesn't feel right.
I agree about the full interior part though. That ate up so much of their time and resources there wasn't enough of either left to make another type of boat.

I couldn't disagree more. They did see some combat, and kaleuns were assigned to them, so having one in the game is a lot more than just a luxury. Whether you want one or not is your business. I won't play unless I can start in one.

Yeah and thats the problem, It sets a standard and an expectation for modders to build a type 9 interior & exterior and make it all fully functional in game. Months if not years of work for single person, I personally think its very unlikley we will ever see a other Uboat types for SH5 (done to same intricate level as the pre existing Type VII)

Ok then in that case, lets not go there... :O:

it HAS WAY MORE POTENTIAL. yes I agree, it has.
but I don't agree that it is WAY BETTER. that will come with time, im sure, if SH3 is anything to go by - you see, SH3 is a great standard bearer - it shows what can be achieved, (i don't play SH4 - so I can not comment.)
SH5 will have its day - absolutely!
its silly to compare the Sims - its not worth it. each of them occupy special places for those that love them - that can not be taken away. it has nothing to do with old or new technology. its about the feeling you have with the game.
but for now, as an option, i'll stay with SH3. simply because ive grown with it. ive seen it develop. and, I had the time in the past to persevere with it. at this point in my life I don't have the time id like to spend on SH5 - I have tried it believe me, several times over - following the instructions in tutorials and in the mod readme's to the letter, and it flaws me - it became exhausting. im sure there are others here with this same experience.
it must not be about SH3 is better than SH5 - its not about that, its about preference at the moment. and for me I can load and sail without hic-ups. I know SH3's weak spots and im careful to avoid them. I want the same for SH5 too and im sure it'll come one day.
they are all beautiful sims - pieces of art, if you will.
its just that SH5 is a rough diamond at the moment and SH3 - for me, has more polish.
Don't really miss the II and XXI. Miss the XI a little but it's a small price to pay for some great looking VIIs. SH3 may be have more extensive mods but frankly, the tools are available to do whatever one wants with SH5, within reason.

I'm just finding the gameplay hard to figure out in SH5.
And I've got the mod that gives me the SH3-like crew icons and the teleport ability.
It just seems much more complicated to run the sub than it was in SH3. Just turning the TDC on and off requires me to go through more steps than just clicking the on/off button in SH3.
I thought maybe it would just take a while to get used to the new controls but I tried and it just seems much more fiddly.
Heck I can't even figure out how to get the time compression to behave like I want it to.

I personally held off SH5 for the most part in order to wait for a more comprehensive mods to make the game overall more better. I have found SH3 to be a more solid game offering a more robust and varied experience - readily available with little effort (thanks to GWX 3.0). I guess it helps if you are used to limited graphics not being an obstacle towards immersing you into the experience offered. :/\\k:
But I'm still eyeing a return to SH5 myself; I actually tried so a little over a year ago but the installation of mods was fiddly, to say the least. It always gets me off the game when I would have to spends sometimes over a day wrestling against a game to get it working remotely, only to encounter more minor problems here and there. But I can hardly blame the modders here for that.
I'll keep an eye out for the current mods available for SH5 in the next few days and see if I can get the game running in a stable form. Fingers crossed :) :subsim:

I have played SH3 to SH5 and play about 60% realism and auto TDC. One major difference for SH5 is the TDC, it is opposite of SH3 & 4. For SH5, lock the ship, display will say break lock. Then unlock the ship and display will say lock. Now fire and TDC will work correctly if using auto TDC.
SH5 uses a travel mode in time compression, too. Go to your documents\SH5\foldername?\cfg folder. Look for main.cfg file. Time compression settings can be changed in the main.cfg here.
I'm also trying to get back after 3 years but I think that even ancient gods are against my will. It even took helluva time to recover my password to these forums.
So far I have clean installed and patched to 1.2 SH5 twice and then installed the JSGME.
At first try I installed TDW generic patcher with reading installation instructions. First try I got a CTD when entering periscope. Second try I pointed patching to the SH5 root directory and with enabling in JSGME it changed all patching to false. Uninstalled the game JSGME and MODS.
That's fine because all I want is SH5 with SH3/4 UI and TDC.
So I did a clean install and patched to 1.2. and installed TDW newUI + TDC and now the game won't even start the uplay window, even after I've removed and uninstalled all modifications.
I'm using 64 bit windows vista, my rig can handle this as I've played this on the same comp before, and the game works unmodded well.
Maybe I'm getting old since back in the day these things were a piece of cake :timeout:
EDIT
And before I've had problems with magnetic detonators that didn't work at all and also torps missing the target a bit from the front. Is there a fix for these cases or am I forced to join in the enemy's forces with SH4.

Well I have been sailing my U-boat for a week now. Definitely a lot better experience than when I last sailed in Oct 2011. Only 1 CTD so far.
I also managed to sink a Corvette with my first Torpedo in mission 'past the rock' although i was sunk trying to get passed a destroyer not long afterward.
At present I am learning to use Real Navigation and finding it much more rewarding.
My only big issue is the amount of Mods that seem to be needed although I am only running a few at the moment and Open Horizons II.
