View Full Version : BBC News Magazine: Coffee addiction: Do people consume too much caffeine?
A cup of coffee in the morning is never wrong.
US officials are investigating the safety of caffeine in snacks and energy drinks, worried about the "cumulative impact" of the stimulant - which is added to a growing number of products. Is our tea and coffee-fuelled society too dependent on the world's favourite drug?

I think quite some nutritionists enjoy the idea of having power and control over people by making them do what they tell them to do, and they like it the more, the more political and sociologically ambitioned they are. Not one week without a new pig-hunt through the streets. Not one week without the newest, the latest, the coolest new diat and nutrition information being revealed. From salad to cholesterine, from caffeine to uncooked vegetables, from cerealia to alcohol - I think there is not much left which over the span of my life so far have not seen a total mutation in assessment through the full spectrum form one pole to the other, and then back again. Only some things have changed in assessment, and stayed like that: Refined white sugar comes to mind, and certain types of fats.

I think what the article was focusing on is food manufacturers putting caffeine in products that are not normally associated with caffeine.
But now even the US - home of Coca-Cola, Starbucks and the 5-Hour Energy shot - is questioning the wisdom of adding it to everyday foodstuffs like waffles, sunflower seeds, trail mix and jelly beans.
I think that food type products that have caffeine artificially added should have informational labels letting the customer know. That way the customer can make an informed decision.

Whilst on a certain unit in the RAF I used to have a lot of 'hanging around' time in the crewroom, which was filled with pool, crappy daytime TV and coffee. Lots of coffee.
I used to not get to sleep until 2 - 3 am, and often wondered why, then I realised the dozen or so large cups of coffee I was having at work every day, topped up with a couple or three in the mess, wasn't helping. Vodka Redbulls in the evenings probably didn't help either.
I went out and bought decaf and now it's pretty much all I'll drink coffee-wise. Occasionally I'll have a full-fat coffee, but I'll know about it straight away.
I buy a good quality decaf, tastes much better than most of the coffees on the supermarket shelves, including brand leaders. I don't usually tell my guests it's decaf and I've never had a complaint - I think most people either have the idea that it tastes crap in their head, or they've only ever tasted the cheap, crap stuff.

I have stopped buying supermarket coffee second-last winter when I tried coffee from a private roaster here in my hometown, who already had won gold and silver medals for some of their melanges. I grind the beans fresh. Once you have tasted such coffee, you never want to go back to supermarket coffee, already grinded, again. The big industrial roasters roast too hot and too fast. That ruins it.
This way I spend twice as much on coffee. But the taste is the difference between night and day. To me, coffee is a luxury item. I save money in other areas. For example by not having a car.
I drink a pot of normal coffee in the morning, only rarely a second over the day. But over the day and in the evening I may have 1-3 Espressi. Different mixtures for both, of course. Espresso, correctly done, is stronger ion taste, but lighter in caffeine. That'S why one can drink it even in the evening. It's an imposter: it just pretends to be a tough brew (by taste), but it isn't: it's a lightweight, compared to normal coffee.
And espresso in German cafeterias and cafés costs 2,50 to 3,50 Euros. Hilarious, absolutely hilarious for that pathetic 25 ml of dark liquid.

Oh, you can, no doubt on that, but many people have ruined their tongues with industrial food for too long, maybe. Extracting the caffeine inevitably comes at the cost of reducing the level of aromes and oils a tiny little bit - and you taste that. I for sure do, no matter which brand. Oil, like fat, is a taste carrier. And missing aromes: well, are missing aromes. So far no caffeine extraction method is known that avoids these losses.
