USS Cod
July 1943
Midway

First patrol in a year or so, got SH 4 TMO RSRD installed, first patrol was assigned to Marshall Islands, not much there so proceeded to Truk, covered the western entrance to the harbor. After a few fruitless days, encountered a small Kagasan Maru, SIX torpedoes failed, all prematurely exploded.Surfaced and used deck gun to sink the small fry.

On July 15, 1943 around 0300, detected three fast moving contacts heading towards the entrance, set up for stern tube attack, then had two DD's moving in fast, someone has radar because was way out of visual range.Forced to dive to avoid a string of depth charges, sonar revealed whatever they were escorting was something big so moved as close as possibly could, the DD's lost contact and keep depth charging fish, I came to scope depth, was about 4400 yards from a carrier! Continued closing, get a good speed, range, and bearing reading, ship was zigging at 16 knots making a distance shot tough, went ahead flank at 100 feet, DD's had before this started coming back anyways, figured would go for it.

With two DD's closing in, fired six torpedoes in a spread, attempting to compensate for the range and zig.Five prematurely exploded but one hit home, leaving a decent hole in the hull, I was forced to go deep and took a sustained but inaccurate depth charging.Gotta love mid 43:/\\!!

At 176 knots, I may have suggested the AA gun! :har:

I cringed when I read Bubblehead was patroling near Truk.
Admiral, have you noticed a lot of bizarre incidents occur in that area?
At least there weren't any "fireballs" fired from half sunk ships this time. :O:

Something in the water near Truk........

I can assure you that since the exploits of LCDR Williams in that area, when I'm on patrol and unroll the navigation map to take a look at it, the first question out of my mouth is, "where are we in relation to Truk?"

I'm guessing it's a sort of Bermuda triangle? I'm also guessing he is referencing that 176 kt speed.

I just had my first patrol around the Marshall islands, and...there was nothing there. Just some lonely atolls. No action at all.

The orders for the next one came in...Tokyo. Oh boy, be careful what you wish for!

But back on topic - does anything occur near the Marshall islands?

I have also done several patrols around the Marshal Islands,
Truk is just a little to the west but in the unmodified game there is nothing there. After confirming the location by comparing the SH4 map to google earth I have sailed into the lagoon 3 or 4 times but its deserted every time.

In TMO the Marshalls are never deserted, at least not in my experience. However the targets you may find there are pretty much limited to DD's and Auxiliary Subchasers. As far as Truk goes, I have found it to be a busy fleet anchorage on the two occasions I went in there. On one occasion a Yamato class BB was there. Twice I have seen a Hiryu class fleet carrier there. Heavy and light cruisers and destroyers as well. Each time I found them to be for the most part stationary and totally unaware of my approach, which made attacking and sinking them a bit like shooting fish in a barrel. While I'm not yet playing RSRDC, from what I have read Truk is pretty much the same in that mod as it is in basic TMO.

Truk is busy in RSRD in esp in early war to Mid late 43, I attacked a carrier, hit with one fish, others would have hit had they not prematurely detonated. Marshalls has patrols and occasional low tonnage single but no convoys but plenty of air patrols, overall a waste of time but I will go when assigned, then move over to Truk area for some hunting.
