View Full Version : Chrysler recalls 469,000 SUVs worldwide over gearshift issue
Luckily I do not own a Chrysler.
(Reuters) - Chrysler Group LLC is recalling about 469,000 SUVs worldwide to update software after some vehicles' circuit boards were found to be transmitting signals that trigger inadvertent gearshifts to neutral, the No. 3 U.S. automaker said Saturday.

One of those things that happen from time to time to every major car maker.

Why the recall for just a software update. I can update my TV firmware with USB flash drive, why not my car?
I guess the problem is a bit more technically focused to just do a software update.

And that is why I do not like the fact that cars turn more and more into computers who take over control...
^Good computer skills needed in today's car world :yep:
And that is why I do not like the fact that cars turn more and more into computers who take over control...
It is occasional software glitches or smelly inefficient engines which break down all the time.
Looking back at average cars of 70s or 80s there is nothing much we are missing here.

Sounds like Chrysler is doing what needs to be done.

That's why I love late nineties cars. A lot more advanced than the klankers of eighties, but no bloody computers.
Cruise control, skid control, speed control, thanks, I got my brain for that.

I don't think I would ever drive a Chrysler, Kia, or Scion.
Ford or Chevy...it's as simple as that.

I must admit I have similar opinions.

We used to own a KIA Sephia 1996. in 8 years we only had to change the battery. Worked flawlesly.
But Sephias were known that if you bought one that didn't fail on you the first month it would last until the day you die. But if it failed in the first month you'd be better of with a rusty bicycle. Depends which shift made them it seems :hmmm:

If you want a car that has no computer in it you need to go much farther back than the late 90's I am afraid to say.
Depending on the maker and model you'll need to go back all the way to the mid 70's in most cases. Most cars have had computers in them for quite some time now.Just because you do not clearly
interface with a computer does not mean that your car dose not one have inside it.
For example if your car has fuel injection and was manufactured after 1984 a computer is controlling your engine.Another example emissions controls a computer controls that as well.Granted these types of computers use fairly simple algorithms unlike a computer required to control an all wheel drive system or a traction control system which would require a more complex computer.
I maybe that recall is a too strong word. Recall entails that its off the market.
Several other makers have to get some stuff fixed along the way - nothing special here.
I have a Toyota and they had to make sure that the switches for the electric windows were lubricated correctly, because some idiot had gone to the local hardware store, bought a lubricant and that had caused the switch to malfunction and overheat.
Seriously?!?! What kind of idiot does that and WHY is that the car makers responsibility?

Fixed the punctuation and spacing for ya. :D
It will be hard to stop technology in cars of the future.

It will be hard to stop technology in anything in the future would be the more accurate statement.
If it where not for the aid of computers in many tasks we would be 50 or 60 years behind in advancement. They can help research things that would take years to research without them.
For example a modern aircraft or even an aircraft designed the years ago they would have taken twice as long to develop without the aid of computers.Take the Boeing 777(not the 787) its engine was designed by a computer. It came up with several designs the top 3 or 4 most closely met the desired parameters.
Not to offend the ones that think that they can keep their car from skidding or staying at a certain speed better than a computer but the fact is that you cannot perform either task as well as a computer can.A computer is a tool like any other use it correctly and it will greatly aid you in many tasks.
I'm sure that 1 million years ago they thought that the one using a rock to open things was stupid.
