View Full Version : Trying to get back into SH5....

After leaving it on the shelf for a long time, I thought that I'd give the sim another go, surely it couldn't really be as bad as I remembered it?
Unfortunately it is... I'm sorry to say this is one of the worst pieces of software I've ever purchased.
I know that a lot of work has been done modding the game, but in my opinion mods should be designed to enhance a game. It seems that in SH5 mods are needed just to get the game to work properly, which shouldn't be necessary.
I am willing to have a go at adding some mods to get over the most glaring problems, can anyone give me a (hopefully short!) list of the mods that are considered to be essential to get the thing somewhere near usable?

Before you even think about mods you need to patch your exe/act files with my Generic Patcher to fix the bugs Ubi left in the game on release. The Generic Patcher also has many new enhancements for the game. It is still being developed so many new things to come  This all assumes you have non-steam version of game. If you have steam version then do yourself a favor and buy the DVD version. The Generic Patcher does not work with Steam version of game.

I'm just getting back into SH5 as well. I would say that it is essential to use one of the UI mods. There are several, but TheDarkWraith's appears to be the most comprehensive and most popular. Without a UI mod, even trying to use basic functions of the game is simply too frustrating. Add a UI mod, and exploring the game will become much more natural. Then you can start looking at other mods.

Welcome back guys! :sunny:

As said above, it's essential to get the latest TDW Generic Patcher, and patch the game as desired.
Then, don't be afraid by the mods number used in our list. Just respect the right activation order, and all has to be fine

As example, the smalest inescapable essential list to start with SH5 as it should have been when released:

-Equipment_Upgrades_Fix_v1_4_byTheBeast
-#Equipment_Upgrades_Fix_v1_4_Patch_1_HotFix
-Equipment_Upgrades_Fix_v1_4_Patch_1 (available by date) V9 by sober
-FX_Update_0_0_21_ByTheDarkWraith
-NewUIs_TDC_7_1_0_ByTheDarkWraith
-Manos Scopes-patch for [your resolution]
-IRAI_0_0_39_ByTheDarkWraith
-IRAI_0_0_39_Patch_ByTheDarkWraith
-OPEN HORIZONS II_full v2 ( or "OPEN HORIZONS II_full v2.1")
-OHII v2 Mission Fix WA (or "OHIIv2.1 test patch2 Full" if v2.1)
-Reworked Morale and Abilities v.1.1

I'll have another go at sorting patches out...all I've managed to do so far is break the game!
I installed JSGME and added a couple of mods, now the game doesn't load properly.
I assume that the Dark Wraith's patcher is an alternative to JSGME, right?
I'll get back to a clean install and try again.

I don't think it's TDW patcher wich broke your game. Rather a bad mod activating (or corrupted) :yep:
Try to just run the game with only patcher, and you'll see...

I have just loaded SHV on my new laptop. The game has patched itself, where can I find TDW's generic patcher?, I have looked through the mods list without much luck.

Also what does this mod do?

Ok found it, I see that it's not a mod also. How do I see what version of SHV I have?

^^^^main screen up right :yep: It should be v1.2...
If not, go to Silent Hunter 5/support/GameUpdater/ and clic GU

Generic Patcher isn't a mod, but can be used as a mod if you want to (with NewUIs v7.4, activate it first in your list!).
Otherwise, best is to run it as stand alone (but with NewUIs v7.4, you'll have to copy/paste NewUIs TDWFileUtils.dll and TDWUtils.dll in the patcher to run it!)

Generic Patcher is essential to play SH5!

It's not correct.. you don't need to copy/paste anything to get Genericpatcher to work :yep:

Sober and myself had an error with NewUIs 7.4 and the latest patcher...
Copying files above solved it :yep:

Fifi, you don't need to copy/past files to get GenericPatcher to work..

If you use it as a mod you should place it first in the JSGME..

Generic Patcher itself don't need any other files.. it works with its files..

PS: I don't see any sense to install Patcher itself through JSGME.. are installing .exe and .act files as a mod not enough?

Fifi is correct , the NewUIs 7.4 overwrites the patcher if putting the patcher after NewUIs 7.4 . So you can eith overwrite the patcher files or put the patcher before NewUIs 7.4 .

Sober, patcher itself is working without any others files.. isn't it? if you want, for some reason, enable it as a mod then yes.. but why do you need any files if you using it as a tool/app? it is standalone application and isn't requires to be enabled as a mod..

Hey Guys, :salute:

Interesting thread but i'm a bit confused, i have installed TDW_GenericPatcher as a mod i believe. I used the "How to Thread" by Trevally.

The thing is i have put the TDW_GenericPatcher last on my list....

I have not noticed any issues but i did get this notice when i enabled the patcher

TDWFileUtils.dll" has already been altered by the "NewUIs_TDC_7_3_0_ByTheDarkWraith" mod.
"TDWUtils.dll" has already been altered by the "NewUIs_TDC_7_3_0_ByTheDarkWraith" mod.

Should i change the order and put the TDW_GenericPatcher first on my mod list?
Unless i have read the how to thread wrong, Trevally talks about adding the patcher after the UI mod or last on the list

If you use the Patcher as a mod you should enable GenericPatcher_v_1_0_94_0 before NewUIs v7.4.0 or higher..

it is better to use standalone patch before applying the mod?

You can use the Patcher whenever you want.. before or after enabling mods.. doesn't matter..
