Hello all:
Have returned after an imposed absence (78 y/o age demands, etc) and with a new Toshiba U845W laptop with Win 7. Transferred my old SH3 with GWX3 from the old XP laptop computer and it seemed to work up to the last centimeter of the loading bar, and then stopped. "Silent Hunter III has stopped working."
Native resolution for new computer is 1792x768, set resolution for SH3 in its main.cfg to the same (also tried 1900x1200 as recommended), no joy.
Cannot find d3dg.cfg as recommended to set that. (If that will actually help.)
Have no idea how to change display aspect ratio to 4:3 on new computer, which is wildly different from 4:3 - although the beginning of SH3 displays quite well as a smallish 4:3 insert on the new computer screen. Which if it loaded would be OK.
Have tried to review all the forum stuff re:Win 7 problems and endless solutions, but cannot figure out a solution.
Have been with SH from the very first issue and have a big amount of mods along with SH3 Commander, but am at a loss. Hate to give up, but...
Any help?...I know, a massively complicated problem, but would appreciate some hand holding.
Last comment: Is it necessary to load a 'clean' version, then put in the 1.4 mod and go from there and do all the GWX mods? If so, why, since my copy seems to do well up to the very last few seconds?

Maybe there's something preventing the .exe to load completely after it's been copied to another computer.
Perhaps load the stock game on your new computer, and then copy all the files and folders from your GWX install, but not the .exe.
I hope someone else chimes in. These forums are a lot less active now :shifty:

Some inquires
1. Where have installed/copied the game?
2. Have you copied your current's career data as weel or have you started a new one?
3. I don't think resolution is your problem. Most likely a file that has gone corrupt during copying.

I had this problem and solved it by changing to resolution to run the game to 1280 x 720 - quickly changed it back though once exited the game.
edit: I have to do this each time I run SH3 also.
I have the same issue as the OP, but assumed it was something to do with Windows 8 on my new laptop. Will have a fiddle around with the resolution and see if that fixes things then.

Archive1, I'm not 100% sure, but I'm gonna guess that your laptop doesn't have the graphics capability to run SH3. SH3 isn't nearly as graphics-intensive as SH4 or SH5, but it is spec'ed for a stand-alone GPU, not an Intel on-board chipset. The Intel chipset is OK for "business graphics" - PowerPoint slides - but not for most graphics-oriented games. Trying to run it will likely result in CTDs. I think the only solution would be a different machine.

Apologies for the long delay, but age and physiology impose their own constrictions/burdens/hurdles...in any case the new Toshiba laptop computer I'm trying to use with SH3 and all the GW addons (which worked just fine with my older laptop) has an Intel HD Graphics 4000 card. At least as far as I can tell. Using Win 7.
Tried again to run the sim and confirmed that it loads just fine through all the splash screen movie stuff, the selection of year/sub/starting port, etc, and seems to do fine most of the way loading the first mission but then crashes just before the last...maybe 10%...bit of the first mission finishes loading.
Is that clear? Dunno. In other words, it seems to load perfectly but then does not finish. Oh, it matters not if I select a pre-loaded Commander or start an entirely new Career.
Maybe too long a delay in the forum to expect any answer, but thought I'd try.
Thanks - Archive1

FWIW, I run SH3 on a Thinkpad with Intel HD 3000 and it runs just fine, 30FPS+ at all times, no issues.
Works both in 4:3 (1024x768) as the native widescreen (1366x768) with Widescreen mod.

Don't give on this group of talented SubSimmers here. This is the place help resolve your proplem. Some times it just take time. Everyone's problem is urgent to them, and we understand that here at SubSim. It could be a simple fix or a complex one. But most likely it will work out with time.

Archive1, your CTDs near the end of initialization sound like the problem is overloading either memory or GPU. Memory overload is easier to fix. Are you using the 4GB patch? If not, you should try installing it and see if that makes a difference.

Long delay in reply...multiple reasons, but have not loaded '4GB patch' and am not sure what that is or even where it is. Some guidance, please.
Archive1...barely afloat, perhaps.

This post has the link to the 4GB patch and some important advice on installing the game to a Windows 7 system:

You can download the patch from here:

Even if your graphics card is not enough to be actually playable, it should load the game screen if there is enough memory. I hope the 4GB patch will get you running :ping:

The game should run. It must be installed out of the program files and you should have 4 gb of memory running with the patch. :know:
There is a thread devoted to making the game run on Windows7. Read it from the beginning and you will be copacetic. :woot:
