I never thought of the question because I thought I already knew the answer. I would have assumed it would drift off into the surrounding air, but even before he said it I watched what happened and thought "Surface tension! Of course!" On the other hand I hadn't thought it would be that strong. Seeing it, it makes perfect sense. Now add some dish soap to kill the surface tension...

Commander Hadfield is awesome, I follow him on twitter, he posts a lot of photos from orbit, some beautiful shots. He's due to come back down later this month IIRC.

Water is hydrophilic. Water likes itself. :)

By the way, this is why soap works to make things clean.
