I have heard of getting old WWII equipment before, like tanks, cannons and so forth. Even basic military boats, but not old U-boats/Submarine. So I came across this on a web page article looking for somthing else and thought I share it. :ping:

"November 6, 2008: Shopping for a unique holiday gift? How about a submarine. There are several Whiskey Class Soviet subs available. Decommissioned in 1991, and built in the 1950s, these boats have sound hulls and are insurable. The price is right; $497,000 (delivery extra). Additional details at (removed for safty reasons).

Discounts are available if you buy more than one.
The Whiskey class boats are basically modified versions of the German Type XXI U-boats. The German subs were 1,600 ton craft, and actually more capable than the 1,100 ton Whiskeys. But that's because the Russians just wanted a good, basic diesel-electric submarine for post World War II use. They got it with the Whiskey, and built 236 of them.
The Whiskeys offered here are demilitarized (torpedo tubes sealed and torpedo handling gear removed, along with other military equipment.) That leaves a lot of room for entertaining. Normally, a crew of 54 runs a Whiskey class boat, but about half as many would be required for a civilian version. While it is possible to refurbish a Whiskey as a pleasure craft, you would still end up with a boat that provided a rough ride on the surface. Running submerged gets old real quick. Perhaps you could just tie it up at a dock, gut the interior, and turn it into a party room.

Not much chance of criminals buying one of these for use as a smuggling craft. The Whiskeys are notoriously noisy and easy for warships and anti-submarine aircraft to detect."

If you purchased a Whiskey Class it would be only good for scrap.I like the line about having sound hulls. It is true though the sound of the wind blowing through all the holes.

Why did you not post a link to the web page? Removed for safety reasons?:hmmm:

Because my antivirus security system Stopped me from looking at the web page. So if it is gonna stop me, I will remove the link so no one else will go there to protect them. The reason wasn't too clear why, but it will not let me get through blocking everything from the page locking it out. That is good enough for me.

Why would a bad link be bad? I do not know, the article was on a clean page. I just wanted to share the article because I didn't know you could even get anything like this.

lol, be some kind of fishing boat, big rough wave comes through you just dive!

I see most likely your software detected a bad link in and add or something on the page.

I like the Tango better than the Whiskey class it just looks better to me.

You mentioned drug cartels and I have heard a few places that they considered buying some Kilo class subs at one point.A Russian organized crime member in the US arranged to get a Kilo for what he thought was a cartel man it was an FBI agent though.

The cartels do use these though they are one time use in most cases but they also have found some fairly complex ones all built in Colombian swamps.

The blue one is really only semi submersible these are one time use when they arrive at the final destination they sink them. The other is a more permanent design and truly a submarine.

I don't think it matters what class it is....I want a submarine.

I just don't want one like the Cartels use. I wouldn't mind a Whiskey.... Heck, it's a SUBMARINE!!! :D :woot: Who around here wouldn't want a submarine?

Then you obviously didn't see Frau's The Ugliest Web Site http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=172916&page=2 (Don't click the link to the actual website - it's been removed now, for some reason!).

Edit - you did see it, you posted (#28) on how good it was with the right amount of LSD

Edit 2 - found that Subnuts had linked elsewhere - http://wonder-tonic.com/geocitiesizer/content.php?theme=3&music=12&url=http://www.yvettesbridalformal.com/ :D

This one here is said that the cartel's hired a Russain sub designer to build. I could see why it would be perminate. But its all fiberglass, so it cold also break apart. Has bathroom, sleeping area, makeshift kitchen, I can not remmber if it is 1 or 2 engines on board.

But if I had a choice, I may end up going along with Red October1984. Unless a working WW2 German U-boat is still available, which is not, choices is limited. Not like I can go liberate the U-505...:rotfl2:

I reckon we'll just have to wait for Disney to sell their fleet.:D

There are re-purposed aircraft out there. Why not a sub?

The ones the cartels have only need to submerge 50 maybe 100 ft.Their goal is not be noticed by visual means they really are expecting to counter ASW but the MK1 eyeball and FLIR systems and surface search radar. For their purposes a fiberglass hull would be sufficient.Another benefit of fiberglass is that it will not rust.

Also fiberglass can be quite strong but the bigger benefit for a crew building one of these in the middle of a Colombian swamp is that the materials to produce a fiberglass hull are much easier to transport than steel.

The National Geographic Channel produced an entire show about the sub and semi-subs it was very interesting they followed some DEA agents whose job it was to track down these vessels while they are still in dry dock.It was very interesting an engineer said that the technology and design with some subs is so high there is no doubt that people with considerable knowledge of submarine design must be designing them. Some subs even had air conditioning systems like this one.

That "DEA" agent in the jungle at the beginning he carries himself in an interesting way I think he is a member of some other US agency he seems more "kinetic" if you understand my meaning. The sub is n the last few moments.

A WWII vintage submarine would be very expensive to upkeep if you wanted it to stay in sea worthy condition you would need a billionaire benefactor to afford one.Just the ones that are on display require a lot of TLC.

I don't about that fiber glass Ideal. See what is aleing me is that below 30ft to 100 ft and a seal or seam pops your in real trouble. 30ft is too far for a safe fast serface swim. Under 30ft you have to fallow the your bubles to decompress your body or you will get the bends. I guess that is when the sub becomes scary first. Its first deep dive test. It fails, well....:o
