Okay, incredibly esoteric question coming up, so bear with me...

What does the asterisk at the end of the designation of a large number of British weapon systems actually mean? As in "Mk IIC*" or "Type 273*"? I've been seeing that darn asterisk for years now, but haven't been able to find a straight answer about what it actually means. This dumb Yank just wants to know so he can sleep at night.:hmm2:

The asterisk denoted minor changes between Mod numbers. Where an American gun might be Mark 2 Mod 1, the British version would be Mk 2*. Then would come Mk 2** and so on.
