Hi Guys,

So for a while now i have wanted to give Silent Hunter a go but never bought it, as well it looks kinda hard to play. Today i saw SH5 on Amazon for a great price and thought why not.
After doing some research on SH5 i found out the game got a few bad reviews and this is also where i saw people mentioning this site and all the great mods that have made SH5 a much better game.

OK so i have never played a Silent Hunter game before but have played and still play plenty of games today. I like to play games like Total War and Eve online so i am hoping i will pick up how to play SH5 quick enough.

Just wanted to ask two things if possible guys?

1, Any advice for a new player on playing Silent Hunter?
2, This is the most important one, what Mods would you recommend to a new player?. There just seems so many i really don't know where to start.

Well Thanks to anyone who reply's

:salute: There are so many benefits of SH5 today that did not exist when it was released, and it is cheap too, here on SubSim are many mods that you will find useful, and the help of many people who know how the game works you make no mistake to buy it on Amazon.

Hi Tiberius XIV

Welcome aboard.
I would suggest that you have a look on Youtube which will give you a broad spread of situations and help to give you a better understanding.
Getting up the ladder is the first hurdle, easy when you know the technique, totally frustrating when you don't. I think this also is covered on Youtube.
I will leave others to suggest mods, but as a newbie you might like to have a go at the stock game to familiarise how the game works and then add mods as you get into it.
Happy hunting Peter

Yeah, I was going to suggest the link that he suggested, but I also agree to go with the stock game first. The mods can be a nightmare, it is no simple task to do the way they are set up in my opinion. Especially if you have never installed mods that way before.

I played the stock game and downloaded all kinds of mods but ended up crashing the game a lot and honestly the mods were just too much. I may slowly add some of them back but I just went back to the stock game with 2 minor mods on 100% realism.

I was thinking of playing the Tutorial (If there is one?) on stock then after that maybe install a few mods.

Is this ok to do?, or do you need to install mods before starting a new game

Thanks

No.. there isn't..
The stock tutorial is a joke of devs..

Better way to have a look at the Trevally's tutorials - http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=177725
These tutorials require the interface mod installation - NewUIs *** by TheDarkWraith - http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=166093

Honestly I have not found the stock game on 96% (I have external view on for the moment to see where my torpedos go) realism to be all that bad. It was kind of hard to figure out how to play the game at first but I caught on quick enough.

I am about to finish total Germany and the only things that I have run in to as problems is once I was ran over by a merchant while at periscope depth and it did no damage to me other than push my ship sideways. After the initial shock of it because I heard it and looked right and saw nothing but the front of a ship and it scared the fire out of me. I went to external and saw that he was just pushing me sideways and I was able to dive and get out of it with no damage done.

Another thing I ran in to last night was if I dived below 100 or so, my ship would not maintain the depth and would drop to 150, and it wouldn't rise unless I was going half speed, or about 5 knots I think it was. I haven't tried this but a couple of times but that seemed to be what happened both times.

I read that the range finder was inaccurate but have gotten used to where I need to put it to get pretty close for the ranges. Like on the liberty merchants I put the bottom of the ship at the cross section that is near the top of that mast, and have gotten good results on hits from that.

I downloaded DarkWraiths mods and honestly I had more problems with that than with the stock game. Not to throw stones at the mod, it is probably fantastic I just need to spend more time with it and I am waiting for a CD version of the game before I try it anymore. Game kept crashing with it probably because I bought the steam version, hence waiting for the CD version to arrive.

But I do not find the stock game as bad as everyone says. I have found the stock version to be really fun and enjoyable, the best I have played on any sub sim.
