Well done , making it to 1944.

The longest I have survived (100% realism + GWX) is mid 1943.
I have been terminated in the Carrebean Sea while attacking a tanker convoy.

Well done GR. GWX certainly is a challenge. Not got any further than the end of 1942 so far. Just started a new career in a Type II out of Kiel, but no action yet, as the war hasn't started yet.

On fourth patrol with a Type IX out of Lorient, on way back having took on fuel and supplies from supply ship Bellshaven off the Canadian coast. Taking the north Atlantic route past Iceland and down through the Irish sea, to see if I can increase my tonnage for this patrol. It's December 1941 and I have sunk 5 ships on this patrol so far, including a Flower class destroyer with a total tonnage of 43,163 tons. One crew member wounded, transferred to Bellshaven. Hull vunerability down to 75% after taking some depth charge damage from an escorting destroyer, just off Reykavik, which caused some flooding and damaged my flak gun. Convoy lost after spending four hours submerged. Proceeding towards Ireland at the moment. Should make it back to base ok, providing I don't meet too much opposition, I hope! My crew are looking forward to some Christmas leave.

GoldenRivet, what mods if any are you using with GWX?
Interested what you find to be a good experience for the sim as I start to get my feet wet in the Atlantic.

My mod list is pretty small for SHIII to be honest:

SH3 Commander to manage and launch the game with the following:
-no fatigue model
-malfunctions and sabotage from french ports after late 43 as i figure with the looming invasion, saboteurs get a little bit more daring.
-simulate realistic career length (you will eventually get a message from your flotilla commander giving you orders to report to kiel as a u-boat instructor or something similar)
-randomize number of days in port
-use historic availability of u-boats
-use real ship names in patrol reports
-set wave height to seasonal
-randomize u-boat crush depth so you never really know when its going to happen just as in reality ( i took a VIIC down to over 400 meters once... involuntarily of course)

as for general mods:

GWX3.0
wooden lifeboats mod
WB's Mission Orders lite (reduces radio traffic to important stuff only)
GWX no medals on crew
FM New Interior Mod v2.1D (provides interior from diesel room forward)
Manos Environment Proversion 2.1 (looks great)

I also salvaged the "depth charge exploding from submarine" sound effect from Trigger Maru for SH4 and put it in place of the sound in SH3... its a much deeper sort of "BaaBoooom... Whomp" sort of sound - hard to describe, but it is like a booming thump of an explosion followed by what i would describe as sort of an echo. I find it to be most satisfying during heavy depth charge attacks.

I have also toyed with

OLC GUI - but i found that it is not entirely compatible with the interior mod

additionally, the Merchant Fleet Mod ads a lot of diversity to the ships, however there are a couple of killers for me here and that is 1. the ships that are part of the MFM mod pack are called by strange type names like "Type: XD01" so when you sink them, and use SH3 Commander to generate your personnel file... it will give you the date and time of sinking a XD01 but will not provide a ship name (is SS Scaramanga) nor will it give you the cargo load out 2. the recognition manual sort of takes on an undesirable funny look to it.

because of this i decided not to use these 2 mods

Depending on the year, i will put in the gramophone tracks "German Hits 1940, 1941, 1942 etc but i find i rarely use the gramophone in game

it becomes obvious that i dont spend a lot of time "outside the boat" as you can see there are not many mods focused on graphic improvement.

My realism settings can vary depending on what i am in the mood for... some days i just want to blow off some steam and i will use the weapons officer. however for my careers i actually do the targeting solutions by myself.

Generally speaking, I will play with full realism 100% difficulty except to keep map contact updates turned ON*. My logic for using map contact updates is that you are a flesh and blood human being living in a 3D world interacting with an environment which is transposed upon a 2D screen and that naturally, your situational awareness will be affected by this. in other words, in reality, it is my opinion that you would have a number of senses available to you that are "lost in translation" between the 2D world and your 3D brain and that by using these map contact updates, it helps you maintain your situational awareness a little more keenly. (i hope this makes sense... think first person shooter games... you really have no peripheral vision or ability to accurately pinpoint the direction a sounds is coming from unless you have some top end surround sound system)

Good info GoldenRivet. Thank you! It definately provides some guidance as I setup SH3. I will look into each mod you noted.
Good luck on your next patrol.

My set up is similar to yours GR, but I haven't got the FM Interior mod, because I use The OLC GUI. My Commander settings are similar, but I don't have the realistic career set, or sabotage ticked. Also crush depth left as normal.

I do use the No fatigue as It saves the trouble of changing the crew round which I find a pain. I know it makes playing a bit easier but it makes life easier. Running on 100% realism except for map contacts and external camera, as I like to see the damage I have caused. So really, my realism is at 88% because of this.

Yes it sounds like we have a similar setup.

Like i said sabotage i only use at a specific time of the war. and the OLC GUI is supurb, i used to be a die hard with it though i doubt i could even remember how to use it now.

You should give random crush depth a go, creates a lot of tension during those deep evasive dives.

then again - SH3 needs little help in the tension department.

im in 1944 now... down right depressing :nope: Seems like all i encounter any more are airplanes and lone destroyers.

There is a fix to get OLC Gold MkII to work with the NewInterior mod. Another awesome GUI is the MaGUI mod which has a widescreen version as well. This also has a fix to get it to work with NewInteriors.

I'm running SH3 with GWX Gold and all is good except for one issue. What appears to be a thin gray bar just above the water on the horizon that blocks out the ships hull. The ship has to get within 3000 yards before you can properly see the hull.

What's the cause and is there a fix?
Answer: Not sure the cause but the fix is GWX - 16km Atmosphere.

What other GWX mods do you activate? Any highly recommended?

The Q-Ship mod for GWX is interesting and worth a look and No continuous 'Ship spotted' for GWX (by h.sie) mod gets rid of the watch crew continually reporting the same contact over and over which can happen on occasion.

Althouth this is not a GWX add on mod take a look at h.sie's patcher for the SH3 exec....
