At last on a mission I ran across 2 ships traveling together - a large US tanker and something called a whale factory ship. I tailed them for a couple hours til I could make out that they were US ships for sure and just before dawn launched 2 torpedoes at each.

The tanker was hit by both and sunk easily. The whale factory took both hits but I had to finish it off with my deck gun. We exchanged fire from about 2500 meter and I hit it about 7-8 times before it sank.

I tried to get screenshots, but I don't know where they are saved. If someone can direct me to where these are stored by SH3, I'd appreciate it so I can post them as well as any good ones in the future.

Whale factory ships are exactly what they sound like, in the early 1900s these ships would travel with whaling convoys, when a ship would harpoon and kill a whale, the whale could be processed at sea. Factory ships of some type are another are still in use today for whaling and fishing in deep sea.

During world war 2 many of these ships were used to transport oil, fuel, and other similar cargo.

Congrats on your sinkings. :salute:

Good work. Now, report the position in which you found the targets.
Date and time, latitude & longitude. This should be given either in the icon on the map of the sunk unit or in the patrol report.

This will help other captains playing in the same area and time.

BDU encourages all captains to work together to hunt down the enemy.

Just wanted to stop in to say I really enjoyed the title of your thread. :har:
Unfortunately, I also understood it. Congrats!

Great! It's one thing to sink a ship at the Naval Academy, and quite another at sea.

Do you manually target, yet? By the way, you said that you "exchanged fire" with the one ship? Was it armed?

your screenies should be in your root SH3 folder:up:

I'm having trouble finding where they should be - is this the right location:

Thanks for the history - I was unaware they repurposed ships like that in the war.

Great advice! I'll do that next time I have the opportunity.

Many Deep Sea Trawlers were armed, during the war and Passenger Liners were used as troop carriers or Hospital Ships., I came across one of the latter, between The Northern Irish & Scottish Coasts. At first I thought it might be a troop ship, but on discovering that it was a Hospital Ship, I increased speed so that I could get a closer look, as I passed it. I then changed course and left the ship to continue her journey. Not far from the same area, there is a Lightship anchored of the tip of Ireland.

Rhody-Dave,

I read your last post about not being able to find ANY shipping. What did you change or do different? Did you have the Med or Black Sea or Pacific mods activated and turned them off?

Yes I was not paying attention and had the Med and Black Sea mods active, hence no ships in the Atlantic.

One good thing, you wouldn't have seen any warships either, or even get depth charged! :haha:

It's an easy mistake, I had the Med Campaign installed and wondered why the Atlantic was void of ships. No wonder BdU were not impressed with my tonnage score. Instead of being an Ace, I was still on the 2 of Spades. :rotfl2:
