I bought a used PS2 Slim from Gamestop about two weeks back, and it ****ed up my copy of MGS2 today in the middle of the Tanker missions and left a big fat circular scratch on the disc that renders the game unplayable up to a certain point.

I know Gamestop has to refund/exchange my PS2, but what about my game? I didn't buy it from Gamestop, but it was in pristine condition before the PS2 chewed it up. You think they'll reimburse me for my copy of MGS2 if I bring it in and show them the scratch?

What i've learned in my time with dealing with gamestop is that they have relentless, cold, hard policies.

They will not reimburse you for your game since you didn't buy it from them in the last week. They will look for every opportunity to cheat you out of money. They've done it to me before. This is why I don't buy new games. I only buy cheap used games so I don't get cheated out of too much.

The employees know what they're doing too! Last time I was in there, the guy asked me "If there is anything else I can disappoint you with today?"

I had a good laugh. Gamestop is good for buying used games....but I wouldn't buy the more expensive stuff there. You bought the Used PS2. Used consoles are always a risk. They'll tell you that you should've known that before you bought it that it's a risk.

And then they'll send you on your way with a 2$ store credit.

Do you have any offices/institutions for consumer rights advisory in your country like we have here? If so, go there, describe your case and ask whether that shop is legally obligated to compensate you for your damage. If so, set up a sober, determined letter and give the legal details in precise, uncompromised wording and with exact references. A mix of precise info showing you are informed, sober matter-of fact attitude and a believable display of determination to even escalate the situation if necessary (do not exaggerate it, that makes them only laughing), might do the trick.

Or not.

They sold you something that did damage to you, and mishandling obviously it was not?! That means the item they sold is not in order. If they accept to change the console, they admit the fact that it did damage. And then logic would dictate they also compensate for the damage.

Try getting in touch with the maker of the faulty device. You will have better luck with them. Gamestop didn't make the machine, just sold it. The warranty is by the maker.

I'd suggest too that you take a blank disk and see if that too is scratched before risking another good game.

Given the fact it's used, the manufacturer warranty is probably expired.

Gamestop has the Game Play Guarentee thing that you can buy but I think it's only for used games.

There won't be any warranty on it. It looks like you are out of luck on this one.

Sorry to hear about your difficulties RedMenace. I hope you get the matter resolved. A tip, if you are after second-hand hardware, drop by Amibay (http://www.amibay.com/index.php). It's a frendly site and usually if there is a problem with a sale, you get refunded. I have bought tons of Amiga gear there, but there are also sections for consoles both old and new and I bought 2 PS2s from there and both are perfect. :)

Good news. GameStop offered to ship to my house a replacement copy of MGS2! I didn't even have to argue or bargain with them, they just took one look at the PS2 and one look at the disc and were like "okay we'll ship you one from our warehouse"

I know all the horror stories so I had all these logical arguments planned ahead and I'm glad I didn't have to use them. Thank you GameStop for not boning your customers over for once.:salute:

Here's to hoping the replacement copy they send isn't nearly as scratched as the copy I showed to them.

But won't that PS2 just scratch it again? Did you get that exchanged?

Yes I did, but the store I was at had ran out of PS2's so they offered to give me a gift card to go buy another one from a nearby store. Kinda lame that I just got store-credit, but the guy working there told me to ask the OTHER store to give me any remaining credit back in cash once I buy the PS2, since I told him I'll probably buy the Fat PS2 this time (which is cheaper) rather than get sheisted by another Slim PS2.

It's good that gamestop replaced your game without hassle. I've heard horror stories about them. Although I've personally never had any issues with them, but that's probably because I've befriended the manager of the gamestop I frequent(which has it's benefits).

So I ended up bringing home another used PS2 from GameStop today after work and... god DAMN it. This one's also borked.

Luckily it doesn't chew discs, but it won't play movies or PS1 games. :timeout:

I know it's an old console, but ffs, I still have my N64 from 1997 and it works flawlessly, not to mention my Sega Genesis from the early 90's.

How the heck do I manage to get two consoles in a row that don't work right? :wah:

Does it play PS2 games? :hmmm:

Oddly enough, yes. But it won't play SOME PS2 games I own for some reason. It refuses to boot up Gran Turismo 4.

GT4 is troublesome on mine as well, though it works if I try enough (just open and close it basically).

My Atari 2600 still works flawlessly. Just goes to show they don't make them like they used to. oh and my copy of E.T. still works :har: :/\\!!

Wow....

I just use DOSBox for that sort of thing... I just got a copy of Team Yankee running on DOSBox since I'm reading the book. It's not a bad game. :)
