was recently playing bp mission and thought i had pete by "the short and
curlies" so to speak. Boy was i wrong. I was lying in wait with a perfect
setup i.e. 90 degree shot to the port side at 2000 yds submerged. Good ole pete was on a steady course of 215 degrees(true) when he suddenly
changed course to 210(true) and headed straight for my position about 7nm from my "lying in wait position"(2000yds @ 90 degrees port side shot). My question is since 7nm is about 140 football fields in length its
highly unlikely that the sighting was visual. If my understanding is correct the akikaze class was outdated for 1943 time period. Did its underwater detection system have the range or sophistication to detect a sub at 7nm.

Bungo Pete is the Elite destroyer in Run Silent, Run Deep.

TMO puts Bungo Pete in the game. This destroyer is Elite. It will detect you no matter what. I've killed him before...but it was hard. I tried to re-enact the movie but I took a lot of damage in the process.

It's also the only Akikaze in the game.

Let him get real close and then shower him with torps. Make it so close that any turn away will run into a fish.

I'm running the latest TMO+RSRD+TRAVELLER MODS

It isn't the only Akikaze in the game. I have seen plenty of them.

I couldn't tell you how many times I have run into the bungu without ever spotting Pete. I have sat in the straights at times off the North East point there and never seen Pete for days on end. If you want to surface for air and batteries you'll have to move off that point however ... there is a shore battery there.

That's because BP isn't in RSRD campaign, although I think the single mission may be.

Try and act out the movie. Go at ahead flank and hope for the best. Crash Dive after firing.

is there any historical evidence of a successful bow shot like in rsrd.

According to United States Submarine Operations in World War Two, by Theodore Roscoe, by the end of the war the "down the throat" shot had become fairly commonplace.

RSRDC isn't a mod that adds ships. It is a campaign that changes the traffic to be much more historically accurate. 'Bungo Pete' is a product of TMO.

From the TMO Manual

"Two special units to watch out for:

“Bungo Pete”
The nemesis from the movie “Run silent Run Deep” makes an appearance in Trigger Maru. He's the
only Akikaze Destroyer in the game, and can usually only be found in one place. Although he may
make an appearance from time to time as a convoy escort later in the war.

“PB102”
IJN Patrol Boat 102 will sometimes make an apperance.. Formerly known as the USS Stewart (DD-
224). A clemson class destroyer captured by the Imperial Japanese Navy, and put into service as an
escort. This boat was credited in the attack that sunk the USS harder, commanded by “destroyer killer” Sam Dealy."

That's the TMO manual, RSRD overwrites TMO campaign layers. It's been a long time since I've looked, I believe an elite escort is there, just not in the RSRD campaign traffic.

There is a two-ship anti-sub group that patrols the Bungo Strait, a destroyer (sometimes a Momi or other DE) and what appears to be a small cargo ship that is identified by the sound man as a warship. Beware the "cargo" ship! If you manage to sneak in and sink the escort, you will find that the "cargo" ship is sonar-equipped, has depth charges, and multiple deck guns of the cannon variety. The captain is persistent, wily, and will be near-impossible to shake. I always thought this was Bungo Pete in another guise until reading the above. In TMO 2.5/RSRD I've never run into the Akikaze - only this duo. I'm about one for four in managing to take them both out, and never without sustaining a lot of damage. I am curious to know if there was a real-world counterpart to this team.

As I said, from TMO. His reference is to the movie, not the campaign of the same name.

This is a standard sub hunting group in RSRD. One thing RSRD lacks is enough Subkiller groups, TMO has a plenty. I replaced RSRD with TMO's Subhunter files, does make it a lil more exciting.

No, I think he just misunderstood what I was saying. Or what Ducimus was saying. Or maybe I misunderstood what I was saying. It wouldn't be the first time.

We need to press charges against the self-appointed admiral for abuse of power. :stare:

Probably because I suffer so much at home.
