View Full Version : How Many Careers?

Just recently, some of you have been posting about your patrols, or current careers, which are nice to read.

I was just wondering how many of you are running multiple careers at the same time, if so how many?

I am currently running two. The first one starting from Kiel in August 1939 with a type IIa (on 2nd patrol) The other career starting from Lorient in June 1940 with a type IX (Just starting 3rd patrol).

I have thought about starting one near to the end of the war, late 43 or early 44, just to see how things stand. My aim is to successfully complete a career from the very beginning of the war, to the end in 1945, but up to press, I have been unable to last longer than the end of 1942, due to being sunk, by aircraft, mines or depth charges. thus having to start a new career. My tactics at avoiding the enemy are improving, so I might get a bit further into the war with my two current careers. Wishful thinking!

I suppose most people stick with one career, but how many of you are running multiple careers at the same time?

I currently have two careers running under SH3, but a little different from you. I use MultiSh3 and have two installs of SH3.....one with GWX 3.0 and the other with NYGM 3.0, which I just finally got around to trying out. Same as you I have never been able to survive past 1943 in either supermod...guess we reflect historic accuracy in that regard.

Not counting my career in SH4 since it doesn't apply to your question

I'm not playing at all right now, for several reasons. But...

Back in 1998, when I discovered Silent Hunter 1, couldn't decide which of the two starting ports (Pearl Harbor and Manila) to start from. Then I couldn't decide between S-boats and the Salmon/Sargo class, or between a Gato or Nautilus. I ended up running four separate careers, and more when the Australian bases opened up.

SH3 was easier at first, but Beery's Port mod (incorporated into GWX, NYGM and SH3 Commander) opened up the world, and then SH4 came along, and SH5. Once I have a computer that will run all the mods and games I want, I plan to start in August '39 with three careers, one each out of the available flotillas, then add in the same in SH4 U-Boats, then maybe SH5 as well. If and when I finally make it to 1942 I plan to include careers in SH4. My habit is to run a captain until he retires or dies, then replace him with a new one in that command starting the same month the old one ended. Heck, I might play AOD and SH1 as well. Ten, twelve simultaneous careers?

OCD much?

i run about 4 or 5
which is not a great idea because it's impossible to remember details

IXC in 1943 because it's tough and exciting
II in 1939 (just got a type VII on that career)
VII in january 1940, soon to get a IXB (currently writing a story about that one)
another 2nd flotilla but earlier. probably 1942 now, cant even remember if that career switched from IXB to C

and i think i have a VIIC from Bergen in 1944, just to remember what it's like to be hunted all the time

and there is the problem, not a lot of emotion attached to the boats and crews.
better to stick with one career and see it through
(or maybe one extra career from 1943 just to be able to sit on the upgraded bridge with all the goodies)

Two careers.

Main one with IXB which I write a story about. I am a slow writer though, so I don't get to play that career too much. Also, since I started the story I developed a strong sense of companion with that boat and crew, and I fear starting the next patrol, because I don't want to lose it.

The second one is a fresh IIA, just to experience a canoe again...

I've got four SH5 careers and one SH4 going. I hope to complete one of them in my lifetime!

One career only as I don't have enough time to run any more, but I find that with only one I can relate to my crew more :yep:

Running one career every time.
Always starting in 1939 from Wilhelmshaven in a IXB.

Each time I choose a different area to concatrate on : Atlantik , Carrebean , Far East ..... I even want to try the Med for once.

I play until I get killed (DiD - 100%) or finish the war (never happened)

I used to run one career at a time.

Only recently did i start running multiple careers. Still do dead is dead.

I was running three, two ended on a bad note, now only one remaining. when it wraps up i dunno what i will do.

I keep a hand-written log of everything I do while playing. When I'm done it gets typed up as a patrol report. I also keep a file of who is at what date. This lets me juggle everything with no problem.

yeah i usually do keep a log, but the little things get lost

anyway, as has already been said, with only one patrol you tend to feel more emersed because it has been your boat and crew all the time, rather than one of your boats and one of your crews

meh or i'm just too dumb to keep track of 4 parallel histories :)

Some interesting comments so far. I have toyed with the idea of installing a separate install with another super mod, just to see what it's like compared to GWX3, which is what I am running with atm.

I don't think I will have more than two careers on the go at any one time as like someone mentioned, running too many can, get a bit confusing remembering what's already happened with each patrol.

You could say that at the moment I am feeling my way with SH3, after a long absence and when I get back in the swing of it again, I will start keeping a written account of each career, like Sailor Steve.

Then I can turn it in to a story line, to bore the pants off all of you on here. Until then though, you can breath a sigh of relief!

Rusty, did you just say that any more stories on this forum would be boring? :)

A few did appear recently, but they are still quite enjoyable, at least to me...

Or did you try to imply that you can't write interestingly enough?

No Mantibrutalis it's just my sense of humour.

I agree with you, I have enjoyed reading these stories so far, that's what got me into thinking of doing one myself.

Never done anything like this, but I think I could knock something together to make it interesting, but add some humour to it as well.

Maybe keeping it serious, is preferable to a lot of people on here, but I tend not to take life too seriously, A bit of humour doesn't hurt anyone as life is too short not to enjoy having a laugh. :haha::haha::haha::haha:
