View Full Version : Fleet carrier sunk with one torpedo?!

Well, I just sank a Hiyo fleet carrier with one torp. I'm using TMO 2.5, RSRDC, and Traveller mod 2.04. Would this have even been historically possible? :hmm2:

Any other unbiased opinions out there? :D

Fleet carriers are fragile, issue with the in game Zones. In RL, they were fragile, but it generally took 2-3 torps minimum to sink one.

Regarding mods, RFB only uses stock figures for major warships, including fleet carriers. Their NYGM mod only covers merchants and DDs, as I recall. TMO uses stock figures, but increases sinking times by 2.5.

Thanks Bilge Rat. :)

Another important question. Has anyone ever sunk a carrier with one torp playing only with TMO 2.5 (no other mods)?

I did a lot of tests with TMO 2.5 when I was working on my LST mod. You can sink a Fleet carrier with one torp IF you hit the right spot, midship if I recall, but it generally takes two.

Ah, I see. Thanks again, Bilge Rat. :) I was worried it had something to do with a change I made in my Traveller mod, but apparently not.

I just sank one last night.

TMO+RSRD+Traveller MOD

It was pure luck.

I came upon a Task Force coming around Cristobal Island in May of 42. They were heading to the battle of Coral Sea. Two Carriers and at least two destroyers. I was on the surface but dove and went all ahead flank at periscope depth. Due to an odd bug I have no conning tower so I was unable to use my scope or TDC on the surface.

(The bug just started but I wanted to check it out)

I closed on the ships faster than I thought and had fired all six from the forward tubes using a sonar bearing alone as a target heading. Since I could not use the TDC and scope the firing solution was zero. I turned so that the ship I thought was the carrier was at 340 degrees, fired with the fish at slow speed to get the distance needed and heard an explosion within the first two minutes I guess. All other fish missed.

I had hit one of the carriers that had been closer than I thought and was credited with sinking it. I evaded the escorts and headed back to Pearl. I'm still trying to get my conning tower back. Even after heading in I didnt get it back so now I'm trying to figure out if I can save the career at all with it in place.

If is weird sitting at the deck gun as the only means to see outside and having no con on the boat ... just one flat deck LOL

Historically I know of one carrier that was sunk with just one torp, the Taihō. She has struck by one torpedo on the starboard side just ahead of the island. Granted what really killed the ship was poor damage control, but none the less the carrier was sunk with only one torp.

In game I've sunk a Shokaku class with one torp. I don't know where it hit as it was a hip shot I made after firing on another Shokaku and I was making my escape.

Seems I've sunk the Shokaku with one torp playing TMO and TMOwRSRD.

The only shocker for me was I once sunk a Kongo with one torp after years of playing. It usually took 3-4 torps, not sure why it sunk with one that one time.

Can't wait to DL and try your latest version. Had a power surge and it killed my mem slots but one, so game is too slow at the moment.

The Japanese carriers also carried the aircraft fully fuelled.

Made for a nice big explosion.

Has anyone ever heard of the con disappearing? I'm not opposed to starting a new career but I sure wish it had stayed. Maybe they cut it off for a refit and I left Pearl before they added a new one.:har: LOL

Follow up on the con

Seems if I begin a new campaign I still lose the con if I start anywhere in 1942. I tried starting in April of 42 with a Tambor but it would not give me a con.

If I begin from the very beginning of the war with a Tambor I have the con and the watch standing stations return to the ship crew placements.

I hope they stay this time.

That would drive me crazy. Blasted machines!

My sympathies. I'm having problems too; not sure why. Blasted machines!!

IMO, it is certainly possible. 300 lbs.+ high explosives, going off may not be able to pulverize the hull, but it can rupture fuel tanks and start fires, which on a carrier, is the biggest danger. You probably got lucky and rolled a "critical hit".

The HMS Ark Royal was also sunk by one torpedo:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Ark_Royal_(91)

and that was a modern carrier, so it is possible.

The problem comes from the fact that Carriers were high priority target so a skipper spotted one, he would fire a full spread, both the Shokaku and the Shinano were hit by 4, but that does not mean you needed 4 to do the job.

OTOH, Hiyo was hit by 2 torps in 43 and survived.

I've complained to Duke Power. Perfect sunny day, power goes on and off several times in about 12 seconds. Blew the panel on the HVAC system as well. Guy was working on the big green box behind my house. Even with surge protectors, boom, but think because he kept surging over and over.

I'm sure they'll offer to pay for damage...:haha:
