View Full Version : US Army's last tanks depart from Germany
Hard to believe...
http://www.stripes.com/news/us-army-s-last-tanks-depart-from-germany-1.214977
STUTTGART, Germany — The U.S. Army’s 69-year history of basing main battle tanks on German soil quietly ended last month when 22 Abrams tanks, a main feature of armored combat units throughout the Cold War, embarked for the U.S. The departure of the last M-1 Abrams tanks coincides with the inactivation of two of the Army’s Germany-based heavy brigades. Last year, the 170th Infantry out of Baumholder disbanded. And the 172nd Separate Infantry Brigade at Grafenwöhr is in the process of doing the same.

Thirty years ago we were expecting the Warsaw Pact to roll over the eastern borders every/any day. My kids don't understand what its was like living with everyone's finger on the trigger all the time. I hope they never do.

Ironic.
I just started reading Team Yankee by Harold Coyle. It's about M1 Abrams tanks in Germany fighting the Soviets. :)

No matter what we say....I think that inside, we are all thankful for those tanks and their purpose during the Cold War.

In Germany tank crewmen enjoyed getting tanked off duty by drinking great tasting German beer out of tankards.
It may have been a "tankless" job but as they say "You give some and you tank some".

Armo(u)r puns?
So an Abrams meets a T-72 and says, "You gotta light?"
The T-72 says "Yeah, just a second."
The T-72 explodes and bursts into flames.
Abrams says "Tanks."

I think the Russian tanks suffer from that. Oh wait, that's burning turrets syndrome.
They probably should take some penicillin for that.
