Just got through taking on fuel and torpedoes at the milk cow - about a day later just before sunrise i was forced under from radar signals. Shortly thereafter sound contact was made with numerous warships.
scanned the surface, observed a Bogue surrounded by Clemson Class escorts.
penetrated the escort screen and fired a spread of three torpedoes at the bogue which produced a substantial listing to starboard.
I went down to 140 meters and was depth charged. Substantial shaking of the boat, no damage.
160 meters and a bold decoy, depth charged again, Shook the boat badly, no damage
sinking sounds on bearing 110 with secondary explosions.
Increased depth to 200 meters, depth charged for the next 3 hours, no close explosions.
Zigzagged easterly course and warship sounds faded westerly. surfaced at dusk, no contacts continued toward rockall bank.
about 5 days passed with no contacts.
just around 1100 hours dived to evade aircraft, distant warship sounds east of our position. maneuvered while submerged to intercept.
up periscope
spoted a second bogue hunter killer group, at least 4 escorts. opened bow tubes and determined target speed at 9 knots
down periscope
golden opportunity, bag two escort carriers within a week? what are the odds?
minutes pass like hours
up periscope, second range and speed estimation - solution plotted. fires spread of three torpedoes and lowered the scope.
nearing the end of their run i raised the periscope and observed three good hits on the bogue.
i was immediately persecuted by the escorts, depth charged, glass and guages busted out, bow torpedo tubes taking water, secured from silent running to make repairs, dove to 220 meters. flooding stopped. decoys exhausted during the dive.
we spent the next 3 and a half hours playing cat and mouse. warship sounds faded to the west.
surfaced to a great deal of debris on the surface.
the United States Navy is less two bogue escort carriers
