Do a Save before you try and go in to your home port while you're still a ways out at sea. Then quit SH5 and restart. That should help you. If you've been using TC over 256 you will have this problem with a computer that's not quite able to handle all that's going on in SH5 and your background programs that are continually running. My Quadcore 2.81 CPU with XP Home causes this problem. Not enough memory will also be a problem.

You can use Game Booster to shutdown the background programs that are running, which will also free up a bit more memory. Helps me but I still only go as high as 256 for TC.

Welcome to the virtual sub war and SubSim. :salute:

I tried saving and restarting, exiting all background applications and putting the TC at 32 - none of it helped.
This actually didn't use to happen when I didn't have all of these mods installed, so I'm guessing something is wrong with the soup?
Still, thanks for the help.

What computer specs ?
How much ram ?
32 or 64 bit OS ?

Intel Q9550, 8GB of DDR2, 250GB HDD, GTX 275. A bit old, but I think it should be good enough.
I'm running Windows 7 64bit, maybe that's part of the issue?

Try the latest MEP list I just put up . Uses less RAM .

Tried redownloading your supermod (I'm guessing the new version is the one that can currently be downloaded from the bonus mods section) and reapplying it - unfortunately, it didn't solve the problem.
I am however using the steam version of the game, so I haven't been able to apply TDWs .exe patches, so that might have something to do with it.

Try this too :

Right click on the game shortcut (for sh5.exe) and then :

Properties

and then, choose the TAB Compatibility and check :

Disable visual themes
Disable desktop composition

and Run this program as an administrator

That should fix the game and improve the stability.

If you can, load an earlier save game.
You can also try not returning to port - go on a long run for a day or two then return.

If your PC specs are on the low side - small issues like a bottle neck with ships is enough to tip you over the edge and ctd.
By loading an eariler save and/or not returning to port - you let the campaign engine sort out the bottle neck.

I tried loading an older savegame as well as doing the compatibility thing Cthulhus suggested - neither one worked.
I tried waiting outside of port for a day - didn't work.
I don't think this is a memory problem, considering I have 8GB of RAM and the RAM consumption I get is - at most - 5.5 GB (1.3 of which are occupied by SH5).

Here is my latest list, not the one you have on the 1st post .

Philipp_Thomsen is the person to ask about the all in one download .

Did you patched the games with the TheDarkWraith's game patcher?

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=181433&page=108

Then, try to activate the orbit patches (located on two patches) and a many places, and try again.

That will block the progress bar but in your case you just want to go back at home so...

@volodya: Thanks, that worked! It is weird though, considering I have much more RAM than the game usually requires.

@Cthulhus: I can't do that, as I'm running the steam version of the game

@sober: While I have solved the problem, I will make sure to update my mods to your new list.

I don't think this is RAM issue.. more likely it was CPU..
I'm running Q6600 and I know everything about issues like yours.. :D

TRY THIS : (One of my friend have the exact same problem)

Launch the game with the recommendation above (about the properties tab) and then in the game menu, set all graphics to low and then launch the game ( restart it).

And then load you game.

If that work that mean that something on the graphics are not supported by your hardware. Then, add details on the graphics settings step by step till your game crash again.

For my friend, it was "3D Clouds" (and his computer is a Intel I7 with Gforce675 and 12Gb or ram ...)

Xavier, your advice should help get the OP past his problem if he is exceeding the capabilities of his machine. But there is one flaw in your plan: By turning on one graphics option at a time until his system cries "Uncle!", he won't necessarily learn what is causing his problem. If the issue is overloading some element of the graphics card, then the option that causes the problem may just be the straw that breaks the camel's back. 3-D Clouds might work perfectly well in your friend's machine, as long as other options are turned off. And since different options stress different parts of the GPU, only an elaborate (and time-consuming, since you have to restart the game each time) set of tests would reveal the troublemaker(s).

A slightly different approach would be to first try the game in Low graphics mode. If it works, then consider which (if any) graphics features are really important to you. Got to have better clouds, better water, or better shadows? Pick one. Try the one you care most about first. If the game is still OK, try the next priority. As soon as the game looks acceptable to you, STOP! Go play and enjoy the game!

Not everyone has a GPU powerful enough to run this game with all graphics features enabled. One could upgrade the graphics card, but not everyone wants to, or can afford to do that. So there are two approaches: One is to try and squeeze the maximum graphics quality out of what you have. This is time-consuming, and, by pushing your system to the hairy ragged edge, risks more frequent CTDs. The other is to find the minimum level of graphics quality that lets you enjoy the game experience. This probably won't look as pretty, but will probably be more stable and responsive, so that the overall game experience is more enjoyable. YMMV.

W_Clear, bro, you did a GREAT job, really, but I was really not prepared to hit a mine like this. It was an awful sleeples night, and you, W_Clear, were out of suspicion, Brutus, as sure as the sea is a rough place.
