View Full Version : Taking over for George Miller-Career #4
Red October1984
03-31-13, 12:47 PM
Lieutenant Commander George Miller has retired from active duty to rejoin his family in the States. The war is over for him.
Taking his place is Eugene Williams and the USS Grenadier (SS-210) assigned to Pearl Harbor. The USS Greyback was sunk by Japanese Aircraft a couple of patrols after Miller's Retirement while patrolling South of Okinawa.
Williams' boat is currently assigned to Pearl Harbor and he is preparing for his first patrol as a Sub Commander.
(It was my decision to retire Miller. It was also on account of my campaign file becoming corrupted.)
That's good news! The folks in town will be wanting him to make a speech at the Founders' Day picnic. :salute: :subsim: :woot:
Oh, and we'll have fireworks, hot dogs and beer, too. :/\\x:

I've been told that I need to "surface every once in a while" and that "Your holding onto the periscope too tight" and also "Ole Red is one torp short of a full load"
I know for a fact that I've got a full complement of Mk 14s and at least George Miller got to go home and meet his newborn kids!  Eugene Williams is going to have to step up and do his part now.

There's a rumor pierside that the deployment of the USS Grenadier is delayed due to a couple unchecked boxes in Commander Williams' mental evaluation. Hope that's just an oversight.

Sometimes you just need to stop patrolling in the stormy seas and move on to clear, calm waters.

Well, the crew of the USS Grenadier are going to have a big party tonight before going on patrol tomorrow. I think I'll even raise a toast to the skippers of my sister ships who departed today.
My patrol orders say Luzon....I'm thinking that I'll want to spend some time getting acquainted with the Japanese Home Islands. I might even try Tokyo Harbor if I'm feeling lucky. Right now, I'm off to talk to my XO. After the Ship's Party, I think I'll try and get a few Z's before I have to deal with getting underway tomorrow.

Radio Report from USS Grenadier
Somewhere North of the Phillipines
Well, the initial cruise to Luzon was uneventful. After a bit of patrolling, we made contact with a Japanese Merchant. We promptly sank it. We've been having issues with our batteries out here. Diesel fuel is good, but all these airplanes is killing our battery charging schedule. We're ordered to proceed to a patrol grid north of Okinawa. I will probably head back to port if this goes well. If not, I'm going to try and get into a Japanese port on the Mainland.

Reporting in to Pearl Harbor
Sank ~31500 tons of Japanese merchant shipping. Most of the ships were in the Japanese Home Waters. Luckily, these were lone ships and not accompanied by escorts. The crew isn't ready enough to take on a convoy. This was a good patrol though.

I'm not able to raise my periscope or come to radar depth.
There's a subchaser circling above me. No active sonar...no depth charges....just guns.
Again, the need for a deck gun arises... But then again, there's a BATTLESHIP at anchor a few NM away. Looks like Yamato to me. :hmmm:

Father Goose is a 1964 romantic comedy film set in World War II, starring Cary Grant, Leslie Caron and Trevor Howard. The film won an Academy Award for its screenplay.
While the Royal Australian Navy evacuates Salamaua in February 1942 ahead of a Japanese invasion, Commander Frank Houghton coerces old friend, American beachcomber Walter Eckland, into becoming a coast-watcher for the Allies. Houghton takes Eckland, who is uninterested in anything other than fishing and drinking, to deserted Matalava Island to watch for Japanese planes. Houghton rewards Eckland's sightings with directions to one of the whisky bottles hidden around the island, once coast-watchers on other islands confirm it. To ensure Eckland remains on duty Houghton's naval vessel "accidentally" hits his boat, leaving a large hole in its hull.
Houghton finds a replacement watcher, but Eckland has to retrieve him from nearby Bundy Island. He unexpectedly finds Frenchwoman Catherine Freneau and seven young schoolgirls under her care stranded there. She informs him that the man he came for was killed in an air raid, and Eckland reluctantly takes them back to Matalava with him.
There is no way to evacuate them safely. At first, Houghton promises them a parachute drop with more supplies, but there is too much enemy activity in the area to accomplish it safely. The fastidious Freneau and the slovenly and uncouth Eckland's personalities clash; they call each other "Miss Goody Two Shoes" and "a rude, foul-mouthed, drunken, filthy beast". He adjusts to her and her girls, however, and cares for her through what they mistakenly believe is a deadly snakebite. Freneau learns that Eckland had been a history professor before he fled civilization to the South Pacific.
The "frustrated spinster" and the "undisciplined, self-indulgent escapist" fall in love and arrange to be married by a military chaplain over the radio. Strafing by a Japanese airplane interrupts the ceremony. Since they have been detected Houghton sends an American submarine to pick them up, but an enemy patrol boat shows up at the same time. Eckland takes his boat out to lure the Japanese vessel out beyond a reef so the submarine can torpedo it. His boat is sunk, but Eckland survives and the submarine safely evacuates everyone.
"And now you know the rest of the story."

Torpedo Status: Full load of Mk 14s and 23s minus a 14 and 23
Crew Morale: Still high. We're optimistic about this attack.
New Orders: Negative. We left Pearl to intercept this battle group. Intercept this battle group, we will.
I am currently breaking off of an approach within Truk harbor. I have to do something about that subchaser to get within torpedo range of the Battle Group. It's too agile to hit with a torpedo and I have no deck gun. :hmmm:

LCDR Williams, dispose of the sub-chaser and proceed with your orders. The admiral does not have time for this and he certainly does not want to hear about what you don't have. He suggests next time you're in port, you put in a requisition for a deck gun. That will be all. :salute:

See your back harbor raiding helpless ships, the shame you must feel.
I actually raided Truk myself, but just to test some changes. Sunk the Nagato and Yamato, but never made it out of Truk. Course, I've scripted Truk to make it hard, massive shore guns, elite patrols, subnets and minefields. Well...the subchaser's skipper obviously doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground. If anyone needs shore leave, it's that guy. He obviously knows where I am...but no depth charges. If that thing drops depth charges, I would've died long ago...

I'm not that bad. I just don't want to lose this career so early and it's just hard to attack a large group of warships in 65 feet of water. The game is glitching with the Hiryu. Let's review, maybe we can find some clues to your issues........
"I'm not that bad"
"I just don't want to lose career so early"
"Hard to attack"
"The game is glitching"
"The wreck moves"
"Both periscopes broke and hurt watch crew"
"what is going on"
"Voodoo curse"
Let me think on it......:03:
Fine. I guess I'll just take some screenshots to prove that my periscopes are destroyed and there's a moving glitchy wreck. :stare:

Hey, Armistead! Are you willing to become the missing ComSubPac and review/critique our performance? Uncle Charlie's staff sends us new assignments, and sometimes even a medal or two if we done good. But never a word of praise or criticism from the Old Man. You want the job? We could all post our PatReps and you could carve us a new one when we don't do 110% success. You'd be filling a real need!:)
I'm rather busy reading "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie. I don't like hurting peoples feelings, so I'm not sure I'm the man for the job. You could ask Sailor Steve.
My goal is to remain positive and encourage new players to do the best they can.

Don't worry about SS, my guess is you would come back without any and blame it on Photobucket.
I know you think you see fire balls chasing your sub, hurting your crew and burning up both scopes. We understand your many fears. We are only concerned for your well being. Now, go lay in your bunk, the Doc will be alone to give you a lil shot of vitamins. It won't hurt too much, just close your eyes and go to a happy place.
We're very proud of your almost attack on the subchaser and I'm gonna give you a vacation when you return to base.

There's a rumor pierside that the deployment of the USS Grenadier is delayed due to a couple unchecked boxes in Commander Williams' mental evaluation. Hope that's just an oversight.

I managed to get far enough away so I could go to "Decks Awash" and use the UZO and sink the Yamato.
I am currently RTB. Torpedoes expended. :arrgh!:
Kills: IJN Hiryu, IJN Yamato, and a Heavy Cruiser
Ummmm....
My spidey sense tells me Admiral Armistead is not in the mood to hand out any medals today. :rotfl2:

Then this Admiral can handle the repairs that I need since he thinks I'm a coward for sinking the biggest battleship ever and a jap carrier.

In preparing Admiral Armistead's morning briefing, I find the USS Grenadier is returning to base from it's last patrol. The patrol consisted of a "harbor-raiding" sighting-seeing cruise (with external camera no doubt), playing ring-a-round-the-rosie with one...repeat one sub-chaser, and firing upon various ships tied up at port which were unmanned, unable to defend themselves, and posed no immediate threat to American lives or vessels.
Noted are no instances where the USS Grenadier was actually fired upon. (Sorry, fireballs emitting from "glitchy" sinking vessels do not count). While displaying what as been previously described as "cowardly behavior", the Grenadier received damage to various parts of the sub but far more importantly lost several crew members.
To: LCDR Eugene Williams, USN
The admiral will want a list of the names of the deceased crew members upon your return to base. He will also want you to report to his office at 07:00 with your month and year statistics.
Your future as a submarine skipper will be evaluated by Admiral Armistead and you will be advised how he plans to use your services during the remaining war effort. Good day sir. :salute:

Thank you for the briefing Lt. Goose. Please send this Flash to USS Grenadier. When and if the USS Grenadier returns to port, take
Cmdr. Willians into custody for Article 32 hearing. Take proper action to secure crew and evidence for hearing.

Credit not given for claimed sinking of Yamato, Hiryu or any other ship. All were spotted yesterday in Tawi by US aircraft.

Thoughts while preparing for Article 32 hearing:
And to think...BigWalleye wanted to promote Admiral Armistead to ComSubPac. I don't think their brig is big enough! :o
BigWalleye is probably having second thoughts right about now. "Be careful what you wish for."
You don't want to mess around with this admiral. LCDR Williams is finding that out the hard way. :arrgh!:

Transfer? I hope you're not thinking about going AWOL. I would advise LCDR Williams turn himself in to the MPs and await his Article 32 hearing. Poor fella, this just wasn't his war. :nope:
I would recommend a new young skipper starting a new career, check in with Admiral Armistead for areas to patrol. The admiral has excellent intel on prospective conflicts and I think a young skipper could really learn a lot from his guidance.

Did you get my PM?
That's the only way you'll get me into port without a transfer to Fremantle or Brisbane.
I am currently awaiting your decision at an undisclosed location in the South Pacific.
:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:
Tell CO Williams not to worry. Even if, worst comes to worst, and he is finished in subs, there is always the surface fleet. I know a staff officer of a minesweeper flotilla. A command slot just opened up on the USS Caine. Pleasant duty, on a good ship, I'm told. :03:
Keep an eye on Cmdr Fifi as well.
I don't know about you guys, but I'm going to scour the base before I go on my next patrol. I need to find a yeoman with a special ability, to embellish, er.... type patrol reports.

This isn't a negotiation, get your butt back to base. How dare you send such a request directly by PM to me. We go through the proper channels here, you report to Lt. Goose, he reports to me. Threaten me to stay hidden until I drop charges, have you lost your mind...You moron, we haven't filed charges yet, it's a simple hearing. You forum barnacle, we should shoot you from the stern tube into Tokyo harbor and be rid of you.
Get this nimwit, I'm asking the questions here, From now on, you will speak only when spoken to, and the first and last words out of your sewer mouth will be "Sir!" Do you understand that??

SIR, I am not returning to base until you publicly drop the false charges brought against me. There is confirmation that Yamato and Hiryu sit at the bottom of Truk Harbor. I am being falsely accused and I do believe that either you have false intel or I am being framed.
I do not wish to stand trial for something I did not do. I suggest that you inspect your direct subordinates. Lt. Goose may be working for the enemy by trying to shut down the USS Grenadier.
Sir, with all due respect, I think this is stupid. I am being tried for falsified medical records among other things. I'll have you know that before the USN approves anybody to Submarine School, the recruits undergo a Psychiatric Evaluation to see if they are fit for Submarine duty. After I completed my Naval Academy Education and was commissioned, I passed this Evaluation with flying colors. They wouldn't have let me be a submariner otherwise.
Sir,
I will return to base. I want to meet with my officers before anybody comes aboard or goes ashore. I want the MP's to detain Lt. Goose on charges of espionage. It may be a leak in our system or maybe our radio communications are compromised. I think you should explore your options before you single me out and blame me for something that I didn't do or wasn't involved in.
Regards,
Lt. Commander Eugene D. Williams, USN, USS Grenadier

Cmdr. Williams.
It is clear you don't understand proper navy protocol. YOU DO NOT ORDER ME. No charges have been brought against you yet, it's a DAMN hearing, a hearing in which you can defend your good name.
Your claims against Lt. Goose are unfounded and without evidence, yet you want him charged, why at the same time you refuse to face the suspected charges against yourself.
Your Patrol Report...YOUR REPORT is the evidence against you. You did this to yourself. You stated "I just don't want to lose career so early"
You claimed the Hiryu was creeping around the harbor blowing fireballs out it's arse engulfing your crew, after you claimed you SUNK IT. You then asked "What is going on here, possible VOODOO by the Admiral himself".
You blamed a Subchaser for foiling your attack, even though it wasn't attacking you.
This is your last chance to explain yourself. Report to base at once or I will have you shot on site. LAST CHANCE NIMWIT..........

I returned to base days ago. I've been in Pearl Harbor for a week.
And I never said that the Hiryu was blowing fire out of it's arse.
I said it was moving and leaving a trail of fire in the water. My XO can confirm this. Since I'm already here, why don't we start the hearing ASAP. :shifty:
Somebody start a "Hearing for LTCmdr George Williams" thread cause this one is for my patrols. Obviously, those are going to be put on hold for a bit.

To: LCDR Eugene D. Williams, USN, USS Grenadier
You are hereby ordered by Admiral Armistead to be taken into custody for an Article 32 hearing which will be scheduled as soon as possible.
I would like to remind you that the Imperial Japanese Navy currently has forces throughout the Pacific threatening American lives and vessels. The Admiral's patience with this matter is growing very thin. We need to resolve this and continue our wartime efforts to defeat the enemy.
As requested earlier, please provide the Admiral the current date of your patrol. Also provide the names and ranks of the deceased crew members.
As noted earlier in the Admiral's correspondence with you, no charges have been brought against you at this time. You will have an opportunity to answer all questions and defend your good name.
You will be notified regarding the hearing date/time. Good day sir. :salute:
