View Full Version : I'm A Little Depressed

My campaign as USS Trout (actually lasted longer than the real Trout) came to a horrible end today in the Southern Yellow Sea. I made it until March'45. While attacking a two ship convoy protected by three "D" class coastal defense vessels, I was hunted down and sustained massive damages which spelt my end:wah:

I detected this convoy at long range, and tracked it for some time, when it suddenly changed course and headed straight for me. The plot showed them practically running over me! After some positioning to give me some breathing room off the enemy's track, I closed at silent speed. Just as I was ready to fire (by this time it was almost point blank) the lead escort picked me up and started pinging. I quickly fired a spread of three torpedoes, two of which impacted. The third passed slightly ahead, due to the ships loss of speed. Lucky for me the two were enough. Anyway, the escorts managed some really close hits despite my twisting and turning, and caused critical damage and destroyed bulkheads with heavy flooding. I bottomed out at 258' where it ended. Funny how you could get so immersed in a game that you could actually feel a little bummed out when it ends. Oh well, new career on deck:yep:

Yes Sir, I know the feeling - but you fought bravely
until the bitter end.

March 45...well done. :salute:
And you went down with a fight taking a destroyer out. Any regrets?

I've had several careers playing dead is dead, no saves other than port and made it to 44 and 45. Next thing I know I'm in Formosa fighting a convoy with 6 Type C escorts in 250 ft of water. Sometimes I live, but go back for more and end up dead.

One day I'll finish the entire war without dying. If I make it to 45 again, think I'll go patrol around the South Pole until the war is done.

Old Red is one torp short a full load....

Years ago when I first got in the game, I'd be right in the middle of a large TF, my wife would come in my PC room about 11PM in a sexy gown, made up and I would say, "not now honey, I'm about to sink a carrier." Thankfully the game doesn't mean that much to me now.

I bet you never heard the end of that "aircraft carrier" :O:

"Is that carrier more important than me?"
"Is that carrier more important than picking up the kids at practice?"

Etc....

I know the feeling. Reminds me of my Knights Cross-winning captain in SHIII who got blown up by a Catalina. A promising career cut short!

My sympathies.

I still remember the first Real Career I had in SHCE. I was gradually learning the trade, putting enemy tonnage on the bottom, without taking unnecessary risks, getting my share of awards...

...then some idiot staff pukes decide they wanted some poloroids of Saigon (or wherever)....well, I don't have to tell you how it ended. :dead:

Welcome back Wern. We sure missed your rapier wit, or is witless rape? Anyway glad to hear from you again. You need to go over to General Topics and Look for "Ubirats in the bilges," http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=201823
How was the move? I hope it went well.

Thanks for the welcome, guys. It's good to know that I was missed, even if you really don't mean it, but you all get an "A" for effort.:smug:
I'm just starting to get settled (so to speak) in my new home. Glad I only have to do this (fingers crossed X) once in a lifetime. I.e., coordinate my retirement to coincide with a change of residence, then sell a home and buy a new one both on the same day. The stress was indescribable.

I've been shuffling between a temporary residence in NJ and the PA residence. Must've put 2000 miles on my truck already. Running to PA to let the painters in, then for furniture deliveries, then the tiler, then more furniture; back and forth-back and forth.
My head is still spinning. I'll be officially retired on May 1st. Right now I'm using up all my vacation, holidays and personal days. The doctors found more damage to my arm after a second MRI. I had been telling my Workman's Comp case manager from the very beginning that I wanted another MRI and I believed there was more damage than the first MRI suggested. They wait until the first operation is finished (arm in a sling for two weeks) followed by months of physical therapy 3 times per week and after all that, I'm still complaining of pain and loss of function.

After the second MRI, they tell me they want to operate again?!!!:/\\!!
I explained to my case worker, "They want to operate again when I could've had this cleared up last year? Then my arm in a sling for two weeks again, followed by months of physical therapy again? Forget it!"

I'll live with the pain and loss of function. One doctor even tried to send me back to work before the new MRI revealed another tear.

Anyway, it's been a slow process, getting internet, phone, TV, electric & propane services coordinated via my (recently afflicted) poor memory disorder. I spend about half my time in NJ tying up loose ends. Recently got my new desk put together and my PC up & running so have been able to start posting when I'm not tied up finishing paperwork for my retirement.

So, now that I'm back:

Sorry about your arm Wern. We've been talking about you for months in the bilge. I've done my best to protect your character from Wolferz. I honestly think he's gone totally mad while you were away. Wolferz was somehow elected President of the Ubirats. The next election will be in 2022, I'm sure you'll win if you run.

All I ask is, don't make fun or joke about my dog...:D

PS: Sorry for the rats hijacking another thread, going off topic. Feel free to PM Wolferz with your complaints. We'll try to get it in the bilge before it gets out of control and some ego driven spell checking moderator comes snoopn around handing out infractions.

Yeah, I have to get back into the game. Haven't been able to play since April 2012 due to my injury, physical therapy, etc., etc..
The saving grace (about my arm) is that I have 2 years from the date of my last doctor's office visit to have the surgery/physical therapy completed and still have it paid in full by the state of NJ. That'd be January of 2015. So, I still have some time if the pain or loss of functuion gets worse.

@Armistead:
Don't worry about Wolferz. He's always been a few cards short of a full deck.:O: Give him any kind of badge and he runs around the parking lot flashing it, whooping & hollering about it. Still, gotta love the guy!

We see the same crap all the time with worker's comp. :/\\!! They try to save money, but end up spending twice or three times as much.:06:
