Hey there, Just wanted to introduce myself and say I've been lurking around here for a few months and have been more than impressed with the amount of knowledge out there. First off let me say I have been playing SH4 for quite sometime and have enjoyed it thoroughly. However I have been using stock and seeing how a lot of folks on here scoff at that I thought I would ask for some opinions on mods. I am somewhere in the middle when it comes to realism, I really enjoy trying to get things as real as possible but not so far that I use manual targeting or have asked my friends to call me Captain haha. I guess what I am looking for is something that enhances the experience yet still provides playability so as I don't spend 3 months on patrol with only a merchant to show for it. Anyway thanks for the help and I appreciate the assistance.

Welcome to the forum! Sounds like TMO with RSRDC is your cuppa. You can download them and the patches that go with them (and JSGME, the mod installer) from the SubSim downloads sction.

Welcome to the boat mate. :salute:

You might try TMO by itself for a time, RSRD really cuts down on the random traffic but it really does a very good job on all the naval battles.

If you're going to just patrol and take whatever you fine, just TMO.

RSRD models real traffic so not so many random convoys or ships but when you find them they are bigger more realistic.

If you want to partake in the real battles of WWII than RSRD is great.

Welcome to Subsim!

I recommend TMO, RSRDC, and Traveller Mod Pack.

Cards fan eh? St. Louis Cardinals are the way to go man. Good choice.

In the case that it's a different Cardinals team, you should watch the STL Cards instead. :O:

Welcome aboard. No one scoffs at stock other than the buggy nature of it. Lurker specifically played stock and created RSRD for stock only. Eventually it was modded to work with the larger mod packs. Then there is the stock game GFO mod by Webster that generally corrects the bugs of the stock game. However, these larger mod packs do change the entire face of the game and you will notice it immediately. For what you are looking for I would recommend TMO.

Just remember that RSRD has a bit less traffic than TMO stand alone. IRC TMO uses a spiced up version of RSRD. More traffic and some nasty surprises.

I'm an RFB/RSRDC fan myself. That said, every supermod that's been made for SH4 has much to recommend it. One thing you can do is use MultiSH4 to easily run several installations and try them all.

Oh, I also play u-boats with Operation Monsun.

Thanks for all of the suggestions and greetings, I appreciate the warm welcome. I think I will take your advice and try a couple out and see what I think of them. Also another question for you. I never got the U boat expansion pack since I didn't really have any interest in that theatre but now it seems I need patch 1.5 instead of the old 1.4 which I'm still running. Is there an way around this or do I have to suck it up and go purchase it?

By the way Red October I'm definitely a St. Louis fan, go redbirds!

welcome to the forums you will find this is a great place to get all the help and info you ever need.

its a MUST to have v1.5 since 98% of all the mods for the game depend on that version to work properly and since you don't have that you couldn't have tried my GFO mod and that would be the first mod I suggest you try so you see what a "fixed" game plays like

get v1.5, you will get a different feel from the v1.5 game and it will be noticeable so try that first then try my GFO mod to get used to how the new game runs, the ubm v1.5 ad-on will fix many "issues" with the game and my GFO mod fixes a whole lot more plus adds a few extras while maintaining the stock feel.

after you get used to it you should try TMO if you want more of a challenge and RSRDC is good but its going to pigeon hole the ships into certain areas so if you don't know where the shipping lanes are then its not easy to find ships but its easy enough to google that info. with rsrdc the ocean will seam empty and boring compared to playing stock unless you are in the right areas.

If you enjoy the game and want to take advantage of most of the newer mods, suck up and go buy it. However, there are versions of TMO and RSRD for 1.4.

I use TMO an RSRD. A lot of people use Optical Targeting Correction (OTC) and really like it. There are a lot of smaller mods also that help you tweak your game.

Quit hogging the radio, put it on the PA, and share the game with the rest of us. Now get back to work cleaning the battery posts.

I also recommend the 1.5 version. It's a small investment considering the time you will spend patrolling the waters.

Look, it's understandable you got the dates wrong, you've been busy getting all the rations and supplies on the boat for your new assignment, not to mention all the administrative work involved.

Even though I'm an Atlanta Braves (NL) and Baltimore Orioles (AL) fan, I will have to say that the St. Louis Cardinals have a first class organization second to none and the most intelligent fans in baseball. They know their baseball. :yeah:

I was referring to the idea that you would start reporting the 1943 Cardinals scores relating to your patrol dates. For example, on May 20, 1943 the Cardinals (13-10) lost to the Dodgers 5-2. Stan Musial went 1-5 with a double. Yet another level of realism for you.

All this can be found on http://www.baseball-reference.com/

Good move. The 1.5 will significantly increase your options with mods. Just look around the forum and see what everyone is playing. Load JSGME and check the different mods out. Don't forget to look in the download section. There's a lot to choose from. Just need to keep in mind compatibility.

Wow! Really?

I bet he has some great stories! Which boat did he serve on? :hmmm:

The USS Lark, a minesweeper. I recall my dad told me they had a kangaroo on the ship. He once told me he was laying on a cloth cot on the ship's deck when they were called to "general quarters". He sprang up and responded to the radio room. It was an intense battle he said, ships firing, planes diving all around. After the battle he went back on the deck and saw his cot...a big hole blown in the middle of it!!!

After he passed away, I studied his log book. I was able to determine the battle he was referring to was a little altercation called "The Battle of Leyte Gulf", the largest naval battle in history. The Lark was staged behind the row of battleships that "crossed the T". And according to the skipper's report it also shot down two Japanese planes. Shocking to me. Specifically, it was the Battle of Surigao Strait. It took place on October 25, 1943. He also said it was very secretive, they couldn't open their orders until after they left port. Look it up, it's a great story with many historical ships on both sides.

Nishimura's "Southern Force" consisted of the battleships Yamashiro and Fusō, the heavy cruiser Mogami, and four destroyers.[4] This force left Brunei after Kurita at 15:00 on 22 October, turning eastward into the Sulu Sea and then northeasterly past the southern tip of Negros Island into the Mindanao Sea. Nishimura then proceeded northeastward with Mindanao Island to starboard and into the south entrance to Surigao Strait, intending to exit the north entrance of the Strait into Leyte Gulf where he would add his firepower to that of Kurita's force.

The Second Striking Force—commanded by Vice Admiral Kiyohide Shima—consisted of heavy cruisers Nachi (Flag), and Ashigara, light cruiser Abukuma, and destroyers Akebono, Ushio, Kasumi, and Shiranuhi.

As the Southern Force approached Surigao Strait, it ran into a deadly trap set by the 7th Fleet Support Force. Rear Admiral Jesse Oldendorf had a substantial force. There were six battleships: West Virginia, Maryland, Mississippi, Tennessee, California, and Pennsylvania; all but Mississippi had been sunk or damaged in the attack on Pearl Harbor and since repaired. Of Nishimura's seven ships, only Shigure survived. Shima’s ships did survive the Battle of Surigao Strait, but they would be sunk in further engagements around Leyte, while Shigure survived long enough to escape the debacle, but eventually succumbed to the submarine USS Blackfin (SS-322), which sank her off Kota Bharu, Malaya.

The Battle of Surigao Strait was one of only two battleship-against-battleship surface battles in the entire Pacific campaign of World War II, the other being the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal during the Guadalcanal Campaign and was the last battleship-versus-battleship action in history. It was also the last battle in which one force (the Americans in this case) was able to "cross the T" of its opponent.

Awesome story!

The Battle of Leyte Gulf is one of the ones that I don't know too much about. I've only been into the Pacific Naval War for the past year and I know the basic ones. I.E. Guadalcanal, Midway, Pearl Harbor....

I don't know exact details but I know what happened.

It's a great naval battle to study. It consists of 4 separate engagements, my dad being in one of them, and included the 3rd and 7th Fleets. It was the final "knockout blow" to the Imperial Japanese Navy. Great strategy deployed.

The sad part of my story is I never realized my dad fought in this historic battle until after his death. Therefore I was never able to ask him detailed questions about that conflict. I have found those who fought in WWII don't glamorize or even acknowledge that their heroism in the war was anything more than what was expected of them.

If you ever come across a WWII veteran, stop and ask questions. You will be surprised at their answers. I usually respond with, "you did what?! You're kidding?! They are walking history books that are dying off. :salute:

A humorous side note. The USS Lark left for the Battle of Leyte Gulf from Papua New Guinea, very close to my "Matalava Island". :)
