I have SH3 GWX Gold installed on my Laptop running Windows 8. A slight problems has just occurred when trying to run a saved game from my Career. I have completed my first Patrol by Docking at Wilmshaven
On loading up for my next Patrol, just before it has finished loading (before " Not so long ago!) I get a message, Windows has stopped working and will have to close this program.

I can start a New Career and it will load ok, but it won't load a saved game for some reason.

I have it installed in C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\SHIII.

Previously I installed it in C:\Ubisoft\SHIII and the same thing happens.

Why it will load a new Career and not a asved one is a mystery. I have tried it with SH Commander V3.2 and without SH3 Commander from both folder locations and the same thing happens.

I was wondering if I should right click on the exe, go into Properties and check, run as for Windows XP.

SH5 runs no problem = Installed in C:\ Ubisoft\SH5
SH4 Gold 1.5 runs no problem = Installed in C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\SH4 Wolves of the Pacific. Although I don't play SH4 very often.

Into SH3 again, as I think it's the best SH really.

Any suggestions?

It's not the end of the world though, as I have SH3 GWX Gold installed on my older XP Desktop Computer, but I wanted to take my Laptop on holiday, so I could play SH3, when I got the urge to go to sea. :)

RustySubmarine,

I was wondering if I should right click on the exe, go into Properties and check, run as for Windows XP.

I know from a previous topic that your laptop is almost identical to mine...same AMD processor, graphic card etc. I do have XP compatibility and run as an administrator checked and so far I have had no problems loading saved games. It would be worth a try. If that does not work I am sure someone else here with more PC expertise then myself can possibly offer you some possible solutions.

Did you clean out all old traces of SH3 when you re-installed?

Personally I would avoid Program Files (with or without x86) to prevent Windows messing up the install of GWX.

Also, it can sometimes help when you shut down the game after you finnished the last patrol. So the game completely stores the results. Then restart the game, with SH3 Commander if you have it, to start the next patrol.

:yeah: Managed to get it sorted. I forgot to set it to run as Administrator, plus I had some corrupted saved files in My Documents SH3 Folder. Deleted these, then did a complete reinstall to C:\Ubisoft instead of Program Files (x86). Automatically, SH3 points you to Program Files (x86) so you have to direct the install to the C drive yourself. However on inserting the DVD for SH5 it points to install it to C:\Ubisoft. I think since Windows XP, newer games seem to always point to C:\ instead of program Files.

I was surprised that SH3 would run on Windows 8, being it's an old game by modern standards, but as long as you right Click the exe, click on Properties, then click on Compatibility at the top, then tick Run as XP Service pack 3 and tick the box Run as administrator, then click Apply before closing the Properties Window, SH3 will run ok on Windows 8. So there is life in the old dog yet for the foreseeable future.

I suppose it is the same for Vista & Windows 7 operating systems, but I have only had XP previous to this Laptop.

Anyways, I am back on the high seas again. Starting a New career from 1939 - with the 7th Flotilla. Using SH3 GWX V3 Gold,SH Commander V3.2 and GWX compatibility cfg for SH Commander.

Next I am going to install some more improvement mods and get it as good as I can from the many mods now available.

Thank you guys for your answers to my problem. What would we do without the Subsim forums. More than likely :/\\!! Cheers :salute:

RustySubmarine....

Glad it was a simple fix and you are up and underway. I have been really pleased with Windows 8. Every Simulation game, including the old ones, I have loaded run great....most were far easier to get running then on my previous windows 7 box. Just got my old favorite RedBaron 3D to work as well....really surprised me!

Now that takes me back a bit. Red Baron 3D. I used to have that game, but where it is now is anyones guess, probably up my loft together with loads of other old games. I still have my old Aces Of The Deep,( now that was a good subsim in its day) the big box version that came with printed manual, you don't get those these days. I have Silent Service and the first SH2 but I don't have any inclinations to install that one as it was for Widows 95 and I doubt it will run on anything newer than XP.
